About the Summit

The Michigan Summit on Quality Improvement, Patient Safety &

Wellness is a statewide program that brings together medical

care providers to focus on promotion of patient safety and

enhancement of quality of patient care, along with caregiver

wellness. The Summit supports Section VI of the American

Conference on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Common

Program Requirements. The requirements emphasize that all

physicians share responsibility for promoting patient safety and

enhancing quality of patient care. As a result, Graduate medical education training programs

must prepare residents to provide clinical care with continuous focus on the safety, individual

needs, and humanity of their patients. In addition, ACGME has recognized that the

psychological, emotional, and physical well-being of caregivers is critical in the development

of competent, caring, and resilient physicians.

Quality Improvement involves systematic and continuous actions that lead to measurable

improvement in health care services and the well-being of targeted patient populations. To

make improvements, organizations need to understand their own delivery system and key

processes. The Michigan Summit on Quality Improvement, Patient Safety & Wellness is

designed to focus on the initial steps of quality improvement by highlighting the importance

of residents and fellows in the process of identifying areas of improvement. This Summit further

aids health care systems by providing the tools to effectively study the targeted areas of

improvement. Wellness addresses the well-being of the healthcare delivery team: from

residents, fellows, attending physicians, physician assistants, nurses, aides, and graduate

medical education program directors. The goal is to help caregivers establish work-life balance

so that they can be effective caregivers for their patients.

Wellness and One Story of Impairment Vita McCabe, MD, MHSA, FACS, FACCP

Chief Wellness Officer, Trinity Health

Dr. McCabe serves as Trinity Michigan health system's first

Provider Chief Wellness Officer for physicians and APPs to

address the growing national epidemic of provider

burnout. As Provider Chief Wellness Officer, Dr. McCabe

lead the way toward making health care healthy through

systems change throughout Mercy Health and Saint Joseph

Mercy Health System.

She works in collaboration with executive physician

leadership of Trinity Michigan’s eight hospitals and its

physicians and providers, implementing program systems

of change to build the most remarkable, resilient, and

healthy workplace – placing the doctor-patient relationship

and ease of practice into the center of these system changes.

Dr. McCabe has expertise in the spectrum of physician and provider issues, from

wellness to impairment. She practiced for 11 years as a thoracic surgeon at St. Joseph

Mercy Ann Arbor and now serves to guide health care provider impairment policy,

statistics and management for state licensure boards as well as local boards.

Page 20: About the Summit€¦ · About the Summit The Michigan Summit on Quality Improvement, Patient Safety & Wellness is a statewide program that brings together medical care providers

Since 2017, she has served in administrative innovation clinical roles breaking down silos

in health care and looking to ease the burden of practice for physicians, providers and

patients. She coordinated a regional lung program that combined lung cancer screening

informatics, a quality lung nodule management system and multidisciplinary lung

cancer care spanning inpatient to outpatient transitions in care. In addition, she has

implemented systems change through development of a regional tobacco free for

employees and cancer patients, which is currently being implemented.

For Trinity Health, she has led the physician and provider resilience subcommittee for

the past two years and initiated a five-hospital system pilot in southeast Michigan to

combat physician and provider burnout from a systemic quadruple-aim perspective.

She coauthored Trinity Health’s position statement on physician and provider burnout

to the National Academy of Medicine.

Dr. McCabe’s interest in provider wellness began during her senior year at the University

of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine where she was first exposed to intervention and

policy on impaired physicians and providers. After her own clinical career was

reimagined due to unforeseen health problems, she realized that health care providers

should "put their own oxygen masks on first” and work together to ease providers'

ability to practice. Patients of providers who have lost their purpose are less likely to

engage in their own health care solutions. Dr. McCabe is a passionate believer of these

tenets. This passion led her to pursue a Master’s Degree in Health Care Policy and

Management at University of Michigan to better understand how to mend gaps in care.
