Mechanical cable steering is durable & reliable. Cable systems to some degree can be tailored to individual driving pref-erences. Replacement of Existing Cable:If possible, find part number stamped on plasticjacket of the old cable. If you removed old cable, measure for replacement cable as follows:
New Installation:Measure cable routing path from wheel center line to engine con-nection, as follows:A = Center line of wheel to gunwale (or deck, if routed down-ward).B = Dash to transom.C = Gunwale to centerline of cable connection at centered tiller.
Cable Installations through the Engine Tilt Tube:Add A, B & C + 6", round up to next foot. Order that length cable.
Cables Mounted to Transom, Splashwell or Stringer:Add A, B & C, subtract 6" round up to next foot. Order that length cable.
How to measure Steering Cables : "Measure twice order once."
Rack Steering Cable Replacement Measure Existing Cable as follows:Measure plastic cable jacket ("Y" dimension, in above drawing) in inches, add 30", round up to next foot. Order that length cable.
JBS Jet Boat Cable Replacement, Measure Existing Cable as follows:Measureable from tip to tip & round up to next foot (if needed for whole foot). Order that length cable.
JBS Helms: are only for smaller jets such as Mercury Sport Jet, Turbo, OMC Turbo Jet, etc.and look like helm depicted at right. If your jet steering is different, contact Teleflex.

Inboard Stringer Support MountConnection used on inboards and is attached to a stringer or suitable mounting bracket below deck. Single & Dual Engine Application Guide:SeaStar Stern Drive Steering
How to Spec a System:1. From Application guide confirm that a cylinder is available to your specific make, model, year of drive unit. Select the cylinder that is appropriate for the drive. 2. From the Ordering guide, select the appropriate helm & accessory hardware. Note that 3 SeaStar helm displacements are available for power-steered stern drives (1.7, 2.0, & 2.4 cubic in.) The displacemnt of the helm affects the number of turns lock-to-lock. Lower helm displacement = more turns = less effort/ slower response. Select helm size based on the desired steering response. The 2.4 cubic in. version is not recommended for non-power steered applications.3. Select the appropriate tube or hose & fitting kits required for the installation.4. Confirm that there is sufficient space available in the dash & engine compartments for the steering components. Review helm & cylinder dimensions.
Applications:Ideal for most Stern drives, especially non-power-assisted units, SeaStar is suitable for single & multiple drives & dual stations.
Note:When properly installed, this steering system will connect to stern drive engines using application-specific cylinders which usedifferent types of interfaces. What to Consider when Select ing Controls Dual-Funct ion Single-Lever Controls:
Operate both shift & throttle with a single lever. The control mechanism still uses 2 cables (1 for shift & 1 for throttle) but movement of both cables & control of shift & throttle is achieved through just 1 lever. Twin Engine applications: Although there are 2 levers on the control, there is still only 1 lever controlling both shift & throttle for each individual engine.Dual-function Single lever control: has natural instinctive action,shifting is very quick & can only be shifted at low RPM which protectsthe engine/transmission shift mechanism. Most popular control used.
Single-Funct ion Controls:
One lever operates: only the shift-mechanism or only the throttle.Controls have: 1 lever (controls shift or throttle) or 2 levers (1 for shift & 1 for throttle) Twin Engine applications: Commonly utilize 2 , two lever single-function controls. (1control will operate the throttles), while the levers of thesecond control operates the shift mechanism.
Mult iple Stat ion Instal lat ions:Dual or multiple station applications almost exclusively use single-function 2 lever controls. 2 basic system designs are reccommended for multiple stations:
Parallel Control System: cables from each control station run to the clutch & throttle at the engine. This configuration is sometimes used when cable runs are relatively short & direct.
Series Control System: Cables run front controls at upper station to lower station controls. A second set of control cables runs from lower station to engine.This method is generally used for longer, more difficult cable runs.
When to utilize a parallel series system is dictated by the total degrees of bend in the cables as measured by the sum of the degrees of all bends. This directly affects the efficiency of cable action. The configuration that gives control system the fewest degrees of bend is one to employ.

Dual Station Transfer UnitFor S & SR Two Lever Control Systems:The Morse dual station transfer unit is ideal for parallel dual station installations when two-lever single function controls are used. The transfer unit allows two clutch or two throttle cables to be connected to a single cable leading aft to the engine.
These units are recommended for installations with long or difficult cable paths to eliminate undesirable cable bends that cause cable backlash and reduced efficiency.
When S & SR Two Lever Controls are used in a parallel dual station application cable routings or too small a cable bend radius, it may cause clutch or throttle levers to operate "stiff" or "bumpy".Adding:A Transfer unit & substituting 33C "TFXtreme" cables for standard 33C cables can improve control performance.

Sending Unit: When it's control handle is moved, me-chanical energy is transformed into fluid energy by a Rack & Pinion attached to an internal piston.This Piston expels fluid from Sending unit into all other control heads & the slave unit. Pistons in each of these units are moved an equal distance, causing a corresponding movement in the lever arm of each.
To Control Synchronization:The piston in each sender & slave has two small valves.These open as the piston reaches the end of it's stroke, allowing excess fluid to pass through the piston & into system. Controls can be synchronized, if necessary, by rotating lever arm of any control head from stop-to-stop.
The Reservoir: maintains extra fluid & a constant pressure head (80 psi) for the system. Flow of fluid to & from the reservoir is regulated by the Charging Valve. Fluid expands due to engine temperatures, excess liquid is expelled into the reservoir at a controlled rate. Fluid is returned to system as temperatures drop.
Each Throttle Slave Unit contains:An over-travel bungee in its linkage to the engine. This device assures the slave piston will reach end stroke in each direction. Otherwise, the balance between senders & slave cannot be maintained. The Transmission Slave Unit has a mechanical detent to indicate a neutral position. Each throttle slave has an external Pilot check valve to prevent control arms from drifting back to an idle position.

Engine controls are packaged into systems for complete & simple installation. Systems are designed for up to 3 stations, using either nylon tubing or copper tubing.A 4th station is possible, depending upon tubing length & run. Nylon tubing preferred, for ease of installation and material's expansion characteristics.
Slave unit is designed to deliver up to 120 inch pounds of torque through 80° of travel. System accommodates marine engines & hydraulic trans-missions used on most boats to 100 feet.
