ABOUT OUR FAMILY Our story begins in a small village by the name of Cuautla, nestled in the hills between Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara in the great state of Jalisco, Mexico. That is where a young man by the name of Juan Rodriguez had the courage and ambition to leave his home country in search of a better future. With only a few pesos in his pocket and unable to speak a word of English, Juan Rodriguez, a young teenager, arrived in San Francisco, CA. He resided there for several years while working at an Italian restaurant, periodically traveling back home ever so often to help his mother, father, and ten siblings. After many years, Juan eventually saved up enough money to marry his long-time sweetheart Lucia Arias, also from Cuautla. Together, with her recipes and his restaurant experience, "El Sarape" was born. It wasn't until Lucia got pregnant with the first of three children that they decided California wasn't where they wanted to raise a family, so in 1978 they sold everything they owned, moved to Olympia, and opened the very first Mexican restaurant in Thurston County. Through their hard work and persistence, El Sarape has grown to multiple locations in the Puget Sound area. Juan and Lucia have since retired, passing the reigns to their children, whom were taught the business at a very young age. El Sarape remains a family owned and operated business and hopes to proudly serve its community for many years to come. By choosing our ingredients with integrity and working with local companies that meet our strict standards, we are proud to serve our customers the same authentic and delicious food they have grown to love while using healthier cooking alternatives such as: - Certified Angus Beef - No Lard - Hormone- and Antibiotic-Free Chicken - No MSG - Extra Virgin Olive oil - Avocado Oil - Gluten-Free, non-GMO - Local, sustainable produce organic herbs and spices And now, we are pleased to offer a variety of vegan options! Our selection is one of the largest in the Puget Sound. El Sarape is excited about sharing some of the benefits that a plant-based diet has to offer while putting our delicious, authentic Mexican spin on it.
