Dear Community Members,It is an honour to have been elected as the 2016-2017 President of the McKenzie Towne Community Association.

I would like to recognize and thank Mr. Jaydel Gluckie for all of his hard work and service as President over the last four years.

It is going to be a busy year! We are presently updating the Association’s governance and business plans in order to make the best use of our resources and time.

Central to this is the creation of a community Engagement Strategy. As a Community Association, determining how best to reach out to community members and engage them, is a top priority. We would welcome any ideas community members might have in this regard.

Lastly, we look forward to working with the Residents Association and supporting their never-ending quest to make McKenzie Towne one of the best communities to call home.

Should you have any questions, suggestions or concerns as they relate to the community, do not hesitate to contact us by email at: [email protected]

The Million Question Challenge! What is a puppy? How many dogs are there in the world? What would happen if dogs grew wings and could fly?

Calgary Public Library has a new summer learning initiative for school-aged kids called The Million Question Challenge! Kids will ask a million questions this summer, sparking curiosity and wonder. These questions can be about anything and everything – we hope that the questions will be personal and meaningful to each child, and will spur them on to finding some answers, too.

The kid who asks the most number of questions this summer will win a $250 Toys R Us gift card and get to be the Kid Executive Officer (KEO) of the Library for a day!

We have a ton of fun reading activities this summer, too! Kids from 0-12 can join the TD Summer Reading Club again this year, and read to win prizes. Teens can participate in this summer’s Youth Read. Get ready to read & win all summer long! Visit calgarylibrary.ca for details.

Adults can find great summer reads in both the We Recommend collections and the Your Year of Reading guides, available at your community library.

Imagine having to look both ways before walking down the hallway to your next meeting. Picture yourself having to constantly look back while working on that report at your desk. Envision a workplace where there is a risk of getting seriously injured each time you get up to discuss your work with a colleague. This is reality for those who are working on our city roads.

Keep an eye out for construction zones and obey the posted speed limits. While workers may not always be present, there may be unseen dangers such as uneven roadway or veering lanes. The City would like to remind all of those using the roads that when we watch out for each other, and show patience and courtesy, road work can be completed safely and efficiently.

possible ways to fulfill that need. Allow yourself to be inspired and think outside of the box. You may want to involve others in this process.

2. Evaluate your options and pick one or two possible solutions, outcomes or projects to try to create.

3. Consider a need of others - or one that you share with others - and follow the same process to brainstorm possible solutions and then work on creating one or two possible solutions, outcomes or projects to try to create.

Bruce Reinhold Elvis Sheasby is a life coach with a passion for helping others connect Inspirational Core Values to everyday life. He is leader of Your Grace Land church services and co-host of Your Grace Land Radio. His upcoming book is Your Grace Land – Achieving Success with Inspirational Core Values.

For more information, visit www.yourgraceland.com

Creation often happens in the presence of need and inspiration. Sometimes the need is as simple as self-expression. Children are, by nature, wonderful creators.

The story is told of a 3-year-old girl drawing a picture when her mother comes by to ask her what she’s doing. “I’m drawing a picture of God,” the girl says. “But no one knows what God looks like,” the mother replies. To which the daughter answers “Well, they’ll know after I’m finished my drawing!”

Our First Nations brothers and sisters have a great respect for the sacredness of Creation. This extends beyond a belief in a

Creator; to a profound appreciation for the sanctity of nature and life, a great respect and appreciation for the wisdom and beauty to be found there and a deep sense of responsibility for being stewards of Creation.

Stewardship of Creation implies the activity of being creators. Respect and value shown to Creation points to appreciation and attention to be given in the activity of living in it and caring for it. The milieu for being creators includes Creation or nature itself, but also the man-made structures, knowledge and activity that make up our environment. The context in which we live and the needs that we encounter, when met with inspiration, ignites a creative spark that lies within each one of us. When that creative spark is used positively, the resulting activity of creation is indeed something sacred to be cultivated to serve our needs, and the needs of others, with grace, purpose and passion. As with any major purchase, when you buy a new air conditioner for your home, research is essential as well as taking care to

avoid making certain common mistakes. Consider the following when shopping for a new air conditioner.

What type should you get? You’ll want to decide between a room air conditioner, a package system, or the most common variety, a split-system air conditioner. For whole-house cooling, the split-system A/C is usually the best option. As for brand name, you’re always better off going with an established brand with a reputation for quality. Do some research, and discuss your options with a trusted HVAC contractor.

How efficient should it be?Cooling efficiency is measured by SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio). The higher the number, the more efficiently the A/C will cool your home, the less you’ll pay on electric bills, and the higher the upfront cost of your new air conditioner. However, consider this: In our northern climate, you won’t be using the A/C as much as someone farther south. As a result, it will take longer to reap enough energy savings to defray the extra cost of a high-efficiency A/C.

Should you get a maintenance contract? To take advantage of a higher-efficiency air conditioner, you’ll want to provide it with annual professional maintenance. A comprehensive maintenance contract will ensure that your A/C gets the TLC it needs to operate efficiently and effectively.

How big should your new A/C be? Make sure your contractor takes the time and effort to calculate your home’s cooling load before recommending the capacity of your new A/C. Over sizing an air conditioner can be just as bad as under sizing it, causing energy waste, stressed parts, and uneven cooling.

What advanced features should you get? Your A/C will operate more efficiently if it’s equipped with a variable-speed air handler, thermal expansion valve and multi-stage compressor.

Get a free estimate for your new air conditioner, please contact

calgary coMMunity StandardS - River Safety Tips Your safety and the safety of others should always be top of mind. Rafters, boaters and paddlers need to be aware of water levels, temperature, current speed, cloudy water conditions, and river hazards including bridge abutments, trees and other large debris in the water that can catch, trap or overturn vessels.

Being impaired while on the water is never tolerated, nor is the transport or consumption of alcohol.

Always be preparedYour safety is your responsibility. All river passengers must wear a life jacket or personal floatation device (PFDs) on the water. Make sure it fits well and is fastened properly. All river vessels must also have a sounding device such as a whistle, and a buoyant heaving line (throw-bag) no less than 15 metres long.

Always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. Arrange drop off and pick up points before you enter on the river. Leave emergency contact phone numbers with someone who can report that you are overdue.

Be aware of river conditionsAlthough our City rivers may appear calm in some areas, this isn’t always the case. The City has tools and resources available to help Calgarians check river conditions before you begin your trip. If river flows are high, especially after a major rainfall, postpone your trip until the flows have returned to safer levels. Keep in mind that flows can change quickly.

MLA CALgAry-hAys updAte

AT THe LeGISLATUre:

Motion 504:I want to thank everyone who contacted me in support of my motion that calls on the government to ensure stable and permanent access to choice in education. It is about meeting the needs and interests of children so that they can reach their full potential. Alberta has a long and proud tradition of offering parents and students a wide array of choices when it comes to their education. Alberta has one of the best education systems in the world, and I encouraged the government to keep it that way. On May 2 my motion was voted on and received unanimous support from all parties in the Alberta Legislature. This was quite an occurrence after I was kicked out of the legislature two weeks earlier for standing up to support Alberta’s kids. I caught some as of yet unexplained bias against my motion. As it was recognized my actions were in fact in support of fair play and on behalf of parental choice in education I was invited the next day to return to the legislature. Here is a picture of me with my colleagues MLA Dave Rodney (Calgary-Lougheed) and Richard Gotfried (Calgary-Fish Creek), right after the vote on Motion 504. BUdGeT 2016

Albertans deserve a government that will respect their hard-earned tax dollars and show leadership by responsibly managing debt. As Albertans tighten their belts during this economic downturn, it’s worrisome that our government refuses to do the same. A recent poll indicates that the majority of Albertans do not believe that the NDP plan will diversify the economy and that Budget 2016 will cripple future generations with debt. What do you think of Budget 2016? What would you do differently? www.abpcmla.ca/engage

Summer Time FunWith summer just around the corner it is time to take advantage of all that nature has to offer. This is the best time of the year to get outside and play games that strengthen large motor coordination. Gross motor development enables your child to strengthen muscles and bones.

The preschool years offer a natural window of opportunity for children to develop their gross motor skills because their brains are wired to move their bodies. This is why running and chasing makes a young child giggle with delight and kicking a ball brings on the biggest smiles. Strengthening gross motor skills allows children to take part in a variety of recreational activities which keeps children active and helps strengthen positive mental health. Below are a few outdoor activities that are easy, fun, and help strengthen gross motor development.

Exploring and Walking on Uneven SurfacesThere are millions of ways to promote large motor coordination at the playground from swinging on swings to monkeying around on the uneven bars. The walk to the playground can also provide a fantastic opportunity to develop coordination and balance; run up hills, walk on the curbs, jump over cracks and catch bugs. Give your child a bucket to collect items along the way. Carrying the bucket helps strengthen hand and arm muscles and bending down to grab things improves eye hand coordination.

Coloring with Sidewalk ChalkThe large motions a child needs to make when drawing on the sidewalk strengthens large motor movements in the arms and shoulders. Needing to squat develops the muscles in the thighs and trunk while working on balance.

Water PlayThrow on a pair of rain boots and go puddle jumping or take a creek walk for some balance work. Head to the beach and build a sand castle or try digging with your feet! Have a water fight with wet sponges, great way to work on throwing.

If you follow your child’s lead, she will do exactly what her brain needs to develop and grow. Have a great time enjoying the benefits that outdoor play brings to you and your children.

JuSt Say Hi!

Welcoming new neighbours or introducing yourself to those you haven’t met yet is a great way to establish neighbourly relationships. People who know each other are more likely to look out for one another and help build and maintain a safe community.

Do you know the first name of at least five different neighbours? Would you be able to tell police the addresses of the houses around you in the event you witnessed suspicious activity? Could you ask a neighbour to borrow a cup of sugar or an egg for a cake you are baking? What about asking a neighbour to check in on

the perimeter of your home while you’re away? We sure hope you answered yes to a few of these questions! But, if not, take the plunge and just say hi! One of the easiest ways to increase safety in your community is to get to know your neighbours because people tend to look out for those that they know!

Don’t forget, after introducing yourself, make the effort to wave, greet and chat with your neighbours regularly. This encourages friendly chit-chat and can make neighbours feel connected.

neigHBour day 2016

Neighbour Day is fast approaching, and will take place on Saturday, June 18!

Held annually on the third Saturday of June in commemoration of the 2013 floods, Neighbour Day is an opportunity for neighbours to come together to get to know one another and celebrate your community.

The idea is to meet one another, make new friends, have fun, and maybe work together on a project that benefits the entire community. So make Saturday, June 18, 2016 the day you get to know your neighbours!

Check with your community association to see if they have anything planned, and to find out how you can get involved! And don’t forget to share your experiences on social media using the hashtag #yycNeighbourDay.

Visit calgary.ca/Neighbourday for more information.

Buying Beer for Your Neighbour Day Event?Support your local community association by buying Village beer! Whether you’re hosting a large community event or a block party with your neighbours, purchase any kind of Village beer from your neighbourhood liquor store between May 1 and June 18, 2016 and send a copy of your receipt to your community association. Village Brewery will then donate 20% of all neighbourhood beer purchases

back to your community association for future community-building initiatives.

Just like Neighbour Day, Village Brewery was built with the purpose of gathering people around community. The more people that get out and meet their neighbours, the happier we are as a city.

Receipts for purchases made between May 1 and June 18, 2016

will be accepted.

An early spring will hopefully translate into a wonderful summer for Calgarians. Despite the economic challenges we are currently facing, Ward 12 remains a very busy place. Earlier in the spring we saw the opening of a new distribution centre for Home Depot in Shepard Industrial Park as well as a Marshalls in South Trail Crossing. Two very exciting additions to southeast Calgary!

Construction for the New Brighton Regional Park and the Quarry Park recreation centre has concluded and these facilities will be opening soon. A few months ago ground was also broken for the Seton recreation facility. Southeast Calgary has grown rapidly and the addition of these new amenities will help make this area an even better place to live, work and play!

deerFOOT TrAIL OPeN HOUSeDeerfoot Trail is one of the most important pieces of infrastructure in south Calgary. While the Government of Alberta is currently responsible for Deerfoot, The City has an important role to play. It is my great pleasure to invite you to an open house to talk about the past, present and future of Deerfoot Trail. The open house will take place at First Alliance Church (12345 40th Street SE) on Thursday, June 23 from 7:00-9:00 pm.

In attendance will be representatives from The City, from Alberta Transportation as well as Councillors and Members of the Legislative Assembly that represent south Calgary. It promises to be an interesting evening with plenty of opportunities to address your concerns about Deerfoot Trail.

ARE YOU TRAVELLING WITH YOUR PETS THIS SUMMER?CALL US TO ENSURE YOUR PET IS PROTECTED FROM PARASITES.

Spring has sprung! For most of us, the return of warm weather means an end to hibernation and the beginning of outdoor adventures. But for pet owners however, it can also mean bringing something a little less desirable… PARASITES!

The parasites we see in Calgary and surrounding areas can be categorized in two general groups:

ECTOparasites – a.k.a. those creepy-crawlies that live on the skin of your pet. These are mostly blood-sucking insects such as ticks, fleas and lice and can be found anywhere outdoors. The highest risk areas include fields with tall grass,

wooded areas, or any places with a lot of pet traffic such as off-leash dog parks and boarding facilities. Ticks come with an added ick factor as they also attach readily to people, so be sure to do a tick check on yourself as well as your pet after hiking or camping this summer!

ENDOparasites, or those that live inside your pet, are typically found in the gastrointestinal tract. The most common culprits include roundworms, hookworms, giardia and heartworm. Our pets can sometimes carry one (or more) of these parasites without showing any outward signs of infection, which is why

screening and/or preventative parasite control is recommended.

Veterinarians can create a prevention plan based on the findings of your pet’s annual physical examination, lifestyle, location of outdoor activity, and travel history. So call your vet before the biting begins!

We hope you have a parasite-free summer!
