THE FACULTY OF ARTS, AARHUS UNIVERSITY

Arts is a new main academic area at Aarhus University, Denmark’s second largest univer-sity. The faculty was established in 2011, when the former Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Theology and the Danish School of Education were merged. Arts is now the largest centre for research and teaching on cultural practices and modes of expression in Northern Europe.

Arts is home to a wide range of disciplines - and interdisciplinarities. Our work is not only aimed at producing a broad spectrum of interpretations of our many-faceted world: we aim to create a strong foundation for changing it, in the form of discoveries and insights which provide critical, constructive responses to pressing social questions. In other words, knowledge which provides the basis for intelligent action.

THE ROLE OF THE FACULTY OF ARTSOur goal at Arts is to contribute to local and global cultural, social and economic

development which improves people’s lives through the high quality of our research and teaching activities and of our researcher ta-lent development and knowledge exchange programmes.

• Contributing to local and global cultural, social and economic de-velopment means that all our activities are oriented towards engaging and addressing societal problems and challenges and towards developing thehumancapacityforreflection,crea-tivity and constructive action with the capacity to improve our quality of life.

• High quality in the arenas of research, teaching, talent development and know-ledge exchange is a crucial precondition for Arts’ social contribution, because it ensures that we measure all of our ef-forts against an international standard of excellence.

We strive to send our graduates out into the

world with the theoretical, methodological and communicative ballast to set ambitious goals,askgoodquestions,findsustaina-ble answers, and apply their knowledge productively. Thanks to the language skills and cultural insight they gain at Arts, our graduates have an international perspec-tive, and they are at home in the globalised world of today.

CLASSICAL AND MODERNKnowledge without action is empty - but action without knowledge is blind. The Faculty of Arts encompasses many distinct fields of inquirywhichare joinedby in-terdisciplinary ties and a shared goal: to produce knowledge which allows us to act in the best interest of our society, guided by the values of welfare, sustainability and an active civil society.

The faculty has two campuses: the Aarhus campus in the heart of Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city and the regional capital of the Jutland peninsula, and the Emdrup

campus outside of Copenhagen, close to the government agencies which Arts advises and serves. The Faculty of Arts spans classical humanities and theology disciplines, government consultancy ser-vicesinthefieldofeducationaltheoryandpractice, and a focus on entrepreneurship and innovation.

NORTHERN EUROPE’S LARGESTArts is the largest centre for research and teaching on cultural practices and modes of expression in Northern Europe, with an annual budget of DKK 1bn, 800 academic staff, 350PhD students, 14,000BAandMA students, and 2,500 students following continuing/further education programmes.
