Page 3: Abortions

• Nearly half of pregnancies among American women are unintended, and about four in 10 of these are terminated by abortion.

• Twenty-two percent of all pregnancies (excluding miscarriages) end in abortion.

• From 1973 through 2008, nearly 50 million legal abortions occurred.

• At least half of American women will experience an unintended pregnancy by age 45, and, at current rates, one in 10 women will have an abortion by age 20, one in four by age 30 and three in 10 by age 45.

• 88% of all abortions occur in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Reasons women give for having an abortion

• They say they cannot afford a child• They say that having a baby would interfere with

work, school or the ability to care for dependents• They say they do not want to be a single parent

or are having problems with their husband or partner.

Types Of Abortion

• 1st Trimester– Suction Aspiration– Medical Abortion– D & C

• 2nd Trimester– D & E– Saline Injection

• 3rd Trimester (at an early delivery)– D & X (Partial-Birth)

Suction Aspiration

Page 7: Abortions

Page 9: Abortions

Suction Aspiration

• Also known as vacuum aspiration• Suction aspiration accounts for the vast

majority of first trimester abortions• The tiny developing human being is pulled

apart as it is suctioned out of the uterus

Page 10: Abortions

Medical Abortion

• Term given for abortions caused by taking medicines

• Only available up to 7 weeks (some say 9)• First pill is generally RU-486 or mifepristone, it

blocks the hormone progesterone• Uterus is compromised and embryo dies• Return to office and get second pill

misoprostol to begin uterine contractions

Page 11: Abortions

• Usually within 4 hours the women’s body expels the dead embryo

• Two weeks later a follow-up visit is required to make sure everything has completed

• Not as popular as they were predicted to be

Page 12: Abortions

D & C

• Dilation and Curettage• Uses a curette (sharp instrument) to

dismember and remove the embryo or fetus once the woman has been dilated

• Profuse bleeding results• Sometimes done instead of suction aspiration

but is now more uncommon in US

Page 13: Abortions

D & E

• Dilation and Evacuation• Performed during 2nd trimester abortions• Woman must be dilated over 2-3 day period,

usually with laminaria sticks• Forceps are used to dismember the fetus and

remove it in pieces• Afterwards the fetus is reassembled to make

sure all pieces have been removed

Saline Injection

• Rare today because of extreme risk to mother• Done after 16th week • A concentrated salt solution is injected into the

amniotic fluid via a large needle• Results in acute salt poisoning• The fetus breathes in and swallows the solution

and is usually dead within a couple hours. • The mother generally goes into labor the next

day and delivers a dead baby.

Page 18: Abortions

D & X

• Dilation and Extraction• More commonly known as Partial-birth

abortion• Illegal as of 2003 but there is a loophole

Page 19: Abortions

• Baby is delivered in a breech position on purpose (it could likely survive)

• Body is pulled out but head is left inside• Blunt surgical scissors are inserted into the

base of skull and spread apart• Suction catheter sucks that brains out and

skull collapses• Delivery of dead baby is completed

Page 20: Abortions

• Doctors are injecting lethal drugs into the baby while it is in the womb

• This way when it is delivered breech it is not alive and they can suck the brains out

• It is the new standard for babies being aborted after 20 weeks in some Harvard-affiliated hospitals in Boston
