ABEST21 News ========================================= ========================================= ========================================= ========================================= 1) Reorganization of ABEST21 ABEST21 regular Board of Trustees Meeting was held at Nissan Global Headquarters Meeting Room on Friday, March 2, 2012. The main agenda was approval of accreditation for business schools and mutual assessment for overseas business schools in 2011. Based on the report of the Accreditation Committee, Waseda Business School (Japan), Global Masters in Business Administration, SP Jain Center of Management (Singapore) and Master programs in Accounting and Management, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universiti Brawijaya (Indonesia) were certified respectively. At the Meeting it was decided to reorganize the structure of ABEST21 to promote its reform. Specifically, the Board of Trustees which now consists of 14 members will be reduced to 5 members, and the Advisory Council will expand from the current 5 to 20 members. This aims to reinforce the functions of the Advisory Council including opinion offering. As a result of this reorganization, the

1) Visit to Nissan Global Headquarters, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. By courtesy of ABEST21 affiliate member Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., the Accreditation Committee,
the Board of Trustees, and the General Assembly were held on March 2 at the Meeting Room
of Nissan Global Headquarters. After the meetings, Mr. Toru Ihara (General Manager of
Human Resources Planning Group, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.) delivered a thought-provoking talk
on Nissan’s challenge towards hybrid cars and electric cars as well as human resources needed
for business development in Asia. This was highly appreciated by the Deans of business
schools in Asia who took part in the meetings, as the insights shared by Mr. Toru Ihara were
very useful for curriculum development. After the discussion the participants visited the Nissan
showroom where they were fascinated by the cars equipped with cutting-edge technology.
2) Holding of Management Seminar "Islamic Banking and Finance"

(IIUM), we invited Dr. Engku Rabiah Adawiah
Bintiengku Ali of IIUM and held a seminar on
"Islamic Banking and Finance" on March 9, 10
and 11, 2012. The Seminar was held as a part
of the Collaboration Program “Sharing Quality
of Management Education and Development
of Peer Review System”, under the “Programs
for the Support of Strategic University
Collaboration towards University Education
Enhancement 2009” by MEXT.
On Friday March 9 the Seminar took place at Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa (Tokyo),
chaired by Professor Takato Hiraki (Tokyo University of Science). Two lectures were given:

“Development of the Capital Market in Malaysia” by Professor Hatsuyoshi Ichino (Aoyama
Gakuin University) and “Islamic Banking and Finance” by Dr. Engku Rabiah Adawiah Bintiengku
Ali (IIUM). The lectures were followed by the active discussion with participating students from
Aoyama and Waseda Business Schools on the concept of Riba in Islamic Finance.
On Saturday March 10 and Sunday March 11, the Seminar took place in Nanzan Gakuen
Training Center (Nagoya), chaired by Professor Edward Yagi (Nanzan University). In this
Seminar, four lectures were delivered: “Development of the Capital Market in Malaysia” by
Professor Hatsuyoshi Ichino (Aoyama Gakuin University), “Islamic Banking and Finance” by Dr.
Engku Rabiah Adawiah Bintiengku Ali (in the picture), “Global Data Explosion and Finance in
the New Information Age” by Professor Katsuhiko Okada (Kwansei Gakuin University), and
“Islamic Bank Financing of Business in Muslim Countries” by Professor KHONDAKER Mizanur
Rahman (Nanzan University). Furthermore, discussion on “Reinforcement of global
development capability at Japanese enterprises and business school education” was carried
out as a student interaction session between Nanzan and Kwansei Gakuin Business Schools.
Professor Toshihiko Shiraki who coordinated the seminar at Nanzan University shares the
following impressions of the Seminar: “At the seminar at Nanzan, there were about 20
participants, students and faculty members, including participants of social gathering. Through
the seminar we aimed to understand management knowledge and challenges which the global
companies face and to acquire perspectives and way of thinking on finance required in the new
age. Through discussions on knowledge required for Japanese companies to develop global
business and the significance of business school education, we learned the attitude of working
on practical issues. Students who participated in the seminar commented that they learned the
management ability and way of thinking required at global companies and expect much from
cooperation among business schools”. The seminar was a successful and very insightful event.

1) Holding of the International Symposium
On Saturday, March 3, 2012, at the International Conference Hall, Aoyama Gakuin University,
the international symposium on “A Perspective on International Quality Assurance of
Management Education in Asia” was held as part of the Collaboration Program “Sharing Quality

of Management Education and Development of Peer Review System”, under the “Programs for
the Support of Strategic University Collaboration towards University Education Enhancement
2009” by MEXT. Introductory remarks were made by Professor Norio Hirasawa, Vice President
of Aoyama Gakuin University, and Professor Ilker Baybars, Deputy Dean Emeritus of the
Tepper School of Business, Dean of the Carnegie Mellon University-Qatar, and ABEST21 Vice
President. They mentioned that the society expects much from business school education in
terms of nurturing global management professionals. The program started with panel
discussion on "Nurturing Management Professionals and Intellectual Property Education in
Business School", chaired by Katsufumi Mizuno, Patent Attorney & President of Hikari Patent
Office. The participants of the panel discussion were: Toranosuke Hashimoto, Intellectual
property Adviser, Suzuki Motor Corporation; Junichi Kikuchi, Professor and Dean of Faculty of
Law, Aoyama Gakuin University; and Qinhai MA, Dean of School of Business Administration,
Northeastern University, China. The reality and necessity of intellectual property education at
business schools were noted. In particular, questions were asked by the audience on utilization
of intellectual property and ethics education which inspired active discussions.
In the afternoon session, special addresses were delivered on the common theme of
“Nurturing Management Professionals in a Globalizing World”. The case of Fuji Xerox was
presented by Takeshi Hibiya, Senior Vice President, Human Resources Group, Corporate Social
Responsibility, General Affairs, Legal, Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. The case of Toyota Motor was
presented by Kazutaka Yoshimura, General Manager, Toyota Institute, Toyota Motor
Corporation. Mr. Hibiya discussed how the new employees’ learning through activities to
support the areas hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake became a valuable experience in
nurturing human resources, which made a great impression on the audience. Mr. Yoshimura
shared Toyota case of the educational program called “OT-club” (Overseas Trainee-culture,
language, business) targeted for younger employees with 4 to 5 years work experience at
Toyota, which attracted much interest from the Symposium participants. Keynote Address
"Developing International Accreditation System and Enhancing the Quality of Higher Education
in Asia" was given by Hiroshi Yoshimoto, Director of Higher Education Policy Planning Division,
Higher Education Bureau, The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
of Japan. In the speech the world trend of higher education and the trend of globalization at
Japanese universities were analyzed. Mr. Yoshimoto mentioned that promoting student
exchange in Asia is the urgent issue, and that it is necessary for Japanese universities to
promote globalization and mutual student exchange through cooperation with universities in
Asia, to nurture world-class management professionals in particular. It was stressed that it is
essential to establish the system to guarantee
the quality of education based on international
exchange and cooperation. An opinion was
raised from the floor that wide support for
universities in Asia is also needed.
Panel Discussion on "Developing Quality

in Business Schools in Asia" was chaired by Dr.
Fumio Itoh (President, ABEST21) with
panelists Dr. Adil Basuki Ahza (BAN-PT,
Indonesia), Assistant Dean Pichayalak

Pichayakul (Chiang Mai University, Thailand), Professor John Benson (University of South
Australia, Australia), Professor Emeritus Sang-Koo Nam (Korea University) and Professor
Ming-Yu Cheng (Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia). The discussion focused on the
relationship between diversified Asian cultures and global standards to guarantee quality of
education. In particular, the issue of balance between local standards based on the education
systems in respective countries and global standards was discussed actively. It was mentioned
that meeting western de facto standard is not the only means of educational globalization.
There was not enough time to complete the heated discussion.
The symposium was closed by Professor Katsushige Sawaki, Ph.D., Dean of Nanzan School of
Business, Nanzan University, who reported that this symposium will mark the end of the
Collaboration Program “Sharing Quality of Management Education and Development of Peer
Review System” under the “Programs for the Support of Strategic University Collaboration
