SPEECH BY JOHN LA ROSE AT OPENING OF THE7TH INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIROF RADICAL. BLACK AND THIRD I,IORLD BOOKS. 0n behOlf of the Organising Committee I wiSh to welcome you to the 7th International BookFair of Radical Black and Third World Books. Each Book Fair, each Book Fair Festival, sets us on the road of exploration, of discussion, of dialogue, of discovery, of the relationships between culture, social Iife, politics, science and society that will bind us in an unswerving tie in the struggle for change. Each stage, each mornent of global effort to build a society rooted in the ideals of the French Revolution of 1789, societiesstriving genuinely for Liberty, Equalityand Fraternity, each herculean effort encounters its brutal ruthless and uncompromising opposite. Today we remember the Sharpeville Six in South Africa andthe people of the Nicaraguan Revolution whose lives are threatened by the ruthless intervention of the U.S.A. We express from this platformour solidarity with the Sharpeville Six, with the peoples of Southern Afrlca andof Central America whoare committed to creating a better world. Whatevgr the con- sequence, however long it takes or the difficulty, the victoryrof the struggle for wonkersand peoples power is certain. We have invited to open this book fair Abdul Alkalimat,African American academic, intellectual, activist with whom this book fair has forged links almost from its inception. At this time when Africa6Anericans after three Iong, hectic decades have been striving, attempting, with other groupings, to put a more humane stamp on the face of America we welcome him to open this Book Fair. 76 Stroud Green Road Finsbury Park London N4 3EN England Tefephone numbers 01-272 4889 01-7372268 01-5794920

There were 12 International Book Fairs in total, held annually from 1982-1991, and then biannually in 1993 and 1995. London venues were chosen on each occasion. From year 4 onwards (1985), International Book Fairs and events also took place in Manchester (1985-1991; 1995), Bradford (1985-1993), Leeds (1993; 1995) and Glasgow (1993; 1995). The Caribbean Peoples International Bookfair and Bookfair Festival (1987-1988; 1992) was a related event organised by the Oilfields Workers' Trade Union (OWTU) in Trinidad. The International Book Fairs succeeded in bringing together both national and international participants, especially from the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Central America, the U.S., Germany, France and Belgium. People came, not only to exhibit, order and distribute books but also to take part in an accompanying programme of Book Fair Festival forums and events, which included readings of poetry and prose or a theatrical production, a concert and usually a film evening.
