a b c d in few words
abcd was born in 1999 at the initiative of Bruno Decharme.
The approach of Bruno Decharme is part of a global project, that of a collector and a lmmaker, but above
all, of the founder of a collection open to the public.
Around the rst four letters of the alphabet (abcd - ar t brut connaissance diffusion), bringing together view-
points as diverse as those of writers, psychiatrists, psychoanalysts, historians of art, philosophers, and amateur
lovers, a research group came to being.
A think-tank whose work takes shape through publications, exhibitions, lms and eld investigation.
abcd foundation has international scope through its antenna in Prague founded in 2003 but also thanks to
a number of exhibitions abroad.
In recent years abcd has organized exhibitions around the world and participated in many events.
The opening of a gallery - abcd the gallery - is the logical culmination of this journey. abcd the gallery is a
non-commercial exhibition space dedicated to ar t brut..

Begun in the eighties, abcd collection brings together the main creators of ar t brut from the mid-nineteenth
century to today. It contains works previously included in psychiatric collections, the so-called spiritualist
works and folk art that falls outside of traditional norms. abcd collection echoes the work of precursors
such as the psychiatrist Hans Prinzhorn, painters like Max Ernst or writers like Andre Breton; most of all, it
has been inspired by Jean Dubuffets concept of art brut. Part of the collection consists of works by great
historical artists, such as Aloise Corbaz, Henry Darger, Auguste Forestier, Martin Ramirez, Bill Traylor, Jeanne
Tripier, Adolf Wli and others. There is also a number of works by contemporary art brut creators. Thanks
to its research abroad, with works coming for example from Southern America, USA, Asia or Russia, abcd
collection offers a unique panorama of art brut.

Who are the artists whose works represent for us a sort of artistic purity, these witnesses of another world,
object of our dreams and fears? They are strangers to the culture of ne arts, to the places and rituals that
constitute it: schools, fairs, galleries, museums, institutions, communication media. They are unaware of current
stylistic inuences, labels and technical processes in use. They often live in isolation of the countryside, in the
anonymity of cities or in solitude that could be called autistic. If their territory is that of the common man,
in the words of Jean Dubuffet, one might as well say that their destiny is unusual, since a strange necessity
propels them into a fever of creation, which absorbs them entirely. Indifferent to the contact of the public , they
are unconcerned about the fate of their works. Sometimes they happen to be discovered after their death.
Art brut, as dened by its discoverer, cannot be confused with other forms of artistic expression characte-
rized by cer tain spontaneity: folk ar t, naive, primitive, childrens drawings, art singulier etc.

published by abcd & Actes Sud (July 2000) / Accompanied the exhibition folies de la beautat the museum Campredon in
Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (8 July 22 October 2000)
This collective work, divided in three parts, shows the richness and complexity of art brut. / The rst part presents the
works; it invites us to contemplate the creations of more than eighty authors and for each one of them, meet their particu-
lar world, sometimes unusual and disturbing but always fascinating because of the enigma it represents. / The biographies
in the second part present the often difcult destinies of these extraordinary men and women. Prolic but humble lives,
hidden behind a amboyant artistic imagination. / Finally, the
journal, short essays in the alphabetic order, written by art his-
torians, writers, philosophers, psychiatrists and psychoanalysts,
contributes to casting a new light on the multiple facets of the
subject.

Fernand Desmoulin. Spiritualist Works (1900-1902)
published by abcd and Galerie Messine (February 2002)
Between 1900 and 1902, Fernand Desmoulin, until then an academic en-
graver, became inuenced by spiritualism. His hand, moved by his uncons-
cious, created drawings as if by magic. It is not surpr ising that Andr Breton
was interested in this automatic expression. Today, until now an unknown
part of Desmoulins mediumistic production comes out into the open.

Alexander Lobanov and Art Brut in Russia
published by abcd (April 2003)
Can we speak about ar t brut in Russia ? This book attempts to answer this
question by treating two different aspects, the historical and the stylistic.
It is through the analysis of works created in the closely watched Soviet
society, especially of those by Alexander Lobanov, that Rgis Gayraud and
Jean-Louis Lanoux show, each in their own way, the strength of an artistic
expression that dees history.

Alose. Facsimile of a Sketchbook
published by abcd & ITE Finland (July 2003)
Born in Lausanne in 1886, Alose Corbaz began to draw
in the 1920s. Until her death on 5 April 1964, she would
have produced thousands of drawings made by chalk or
color pencil, which she sometimes diluted with her own
saliva in order to create glazes with saturated colors. To
achieve the dazzling white color she added toothpaste.
At other times, she integrated collage in her composi-
tions. She drew on both sides of large white sheets, but
she preferred the already used wrapping paper, which
she sewed together with cotton thread.
The dimensions of her drawings range from postcard
format to big rolls, some of which reach fourteen meters. Alose has also created sketchbooks. There are about thirty
of them, according to Jacqueline Porret-Forel, who was Alose general practitioner and friend during the formers stay at
the mental hospital of La Rosire in Gimel-sur-Morges. This particular sketchbook, which contains thirty-eight pages, was
created around 1941. Among Alose works, these notebooks, a sort of intimate pictorial journals, are the most moving
and aesthetically the most accomplished.

Apart from the reproductions of one hundred and

biographies of all shown artists, the catalogue allows
great space for discussion. Seventy years after the rstresearch undertaken by Dubuffet, it seems necessary to
question the place of art brut in the beginning of the
21st century. The book as well as the exhibition which it
accompanies, have been based on geographical principle
: Western Europe, Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Nor-

Rouge Ciel. An Essay on Art Brut
ROUGE CIEL tells the story of these artists out of norms, visionaries who set our spirits ablaze and
shake up our ideas. ROUGE CIEL shows how these artists managed to overcome their often tragic
destinies thanks to ar tistic creation. It also features the interviews of writers , philosophers, psychologists
and art amateurs who have influenced the study of art brut.
The Japanese Kunizo Matsumoto cannot read nor write , yet he has invented a form of writing that is
both beautiful and enigmatic.
The American George Widener, who is capable of memor izing events of the last 1,500 years, can alsopredict the future, which he inscr ibes in his magic squares.
Fernand Desmoulin, a French engraver, draws with no light while the spirits guide his hand.
The Czech Zdenek Kosek sits for weeks, looking through his w indow, with no food or sleep. In his note-
book he records a ll sounds and movements around him, fearing that if he stops, the world would cease
to exist.
