Insects are the most diverse animal group on the planet. The key to their success is their unique ability to reshape themselves. They possess fearsome weapons, yet can display surprising tenderness and sophisticated behaviour.

Take to the skies with millions of monarch butterflies in Mexico; see a beetle spray boiling chemicals at its enemies; witness giant bees fight to the death over females; join the marching columns of grass cutter ants; and spend a jeopardy-filled day with damselflies.

Key animal characters:• Monarch butterflies• Damselflies• Grass cutter ants• Dawson’s bees• Bombardier beetles

Gracie!

Sunday, 29 August 2010

Gracie Fields (Jane Horrocks) was Britain’s darling – the singing, funny, working-class film star whose boundless energy, roguish cheerfulness and ironic songs symbolised the spirit of 1930s England. When she fell ill in 1939, her popularity was such that the streets outside the hospital had to be lined with straw as the milling crowd’s footsteps disturbed the other patients.

This film begins at the height of Gracie’s fame. After nearly dying following an operation and three-day coma, Gracie awakes. Hollywood director Monty Banks (Tom Hollander), who has directed her in her most successful films, is at her bedside. Told by doctors that she must take a break, Gracie books a holiday to Capri and asks Monty to come with her.

But on the day she and Monty are due to leave, the Second World War breaks out. Ill, exhausted, but as enthusiastic as ever, Gracie volunteers to do her duty to her fans and country, touring France, singing to the troops to raise money to pay for Spitfires, leaving Monty trailing in her wake.

When Monty finally plucks up the courage to ask Gracie to marry him, it should mark the start of the rest of their lives together. But then Italy declares support for Germany, making Italian Monty the enemy. Gracie must choose between loyalty to her husband and loyalty to her country.

Starring the internationally renowned Jane Horrocks as the singing, laughing, heart-breaking Gracie Fields, this is a romantic comedy steeped in warm wit, dramatic dilemma-filled emotion and vivacious, irrepressible energy.

Poh's Kitchen

Wednesday, 1 September 2010

Poh’s good friend chef Emmanuel Mollois is in Paris. Every few years he travels to Paris to catch up with family and friends and the latest in French food trends. He loves the city and all that it comprises – all the markets, all the villages within the city and even all the dogs! While there, Emmanuel spends some time with his three best French friends. Four French chefs together for a reunion – a meal that is guaranteed to have wonderful food. They have decided to do a French style Aussie BBQ and Emmanuel’s contribution is motivated by his trip to a local market – barbequed apricots marinated in local honey and raspberries.

In the kitchen, Emmanuel prepares an absolutely delicious chocolate cake he watched being made in Paris. He spent the afternoon with Denis Ruffel, one of Paris’s most respected master pastry chefs, as he created a cake especially for Poh. Named ‘Le Papillon’ (The Butterfly), it is a dome of layered decadent chocolate mousse, chocolate sponge biscuit and poached pears, iced with chocolate and decorated with gold leaf, pistachio and topped with a beautiful chocolate butterfly. Complex, delicate and beautiful – just like Poh – and Poh loved it!

Inspired by the idea of Paris and its wonderful cakes and pastries, Poh created one of her beautiful desserts. Her Rhubarb Lily Tart has to be seen to be believed. Delicate lily leaves made from hazelnut and chocolate biscuit float on the plate, while a slow-baked rhubarb lily sits in a pond of orange infused crème anglaise. It’s Poh at her creative best!

Paris, cakes and pastries – a celebration of traditional methods used to create beautiful new desserts for spoiling those you love.

Poh’s Kitchen will be repeated on ABC2 - Thursday, September 02 at 6.00pm.

Grand Designs Revisited: Killearn

Thursday, 2 September 2010

In 2005, Jim Fairfull, a businessman, and his wife Simone set out to build a glass pavilion by a loch in Scotland. Jim was suffering from a stress-related disease and hoped that living in a tranquil setting might cure him of his condition. But there is nothing tranquil about the process of building, and with such a beautiful location it was a challenge to find a design that would do it justice and appease the local planners. But Jim and Simone managed to come up with a design that kept everyone happy.

Jim’s illness threatened to flare up the longer the duration of the build. Nevertheless he gave his builders a free rein with the schedule and allowed them the time to handcraft every detail.

Three years after Jim and Simone moved into their lake house, Kevin McCloud goes back to see if the loch pavilion has delivered all it promised: a cure for Jim and a healthy, tranquil life for his family.

Visions Of The Future: The Biotech Revolution

Thursday, 2 September 2010

What will life in the future be like? American theoretical physicist Michio Kaku believes humankind is on the brink of a radically new scientific era. In this 3-part series, he shares his vision for the future.

In this second episode Michio explains that today humankind is witnessing a revolution in science. And that revolution will radically transform our lives. This bio-molecular revolution promises the almost god-like ability to manipulate life at the most fundamental level. It could enable us to grow human organs in laboratories. Part of that could mean eradicating most major diseases and prolonging life by decades.

The Music Instinct: Science & Song

Thursday, 2 September 2010 Final

The Music Instinct: Science & Song delves into questions surrounding the unique effects music has on mental capacity, intelligence, healing and other areas of evolution, the natural world and even, perhaps, the origins of the cosmos.

This final episode reveals that music’s universality in nature and the cosmos is far more profound than previously imagined. Whales, birds, even elephants sing and concoct melodies.

Scientists, philosophers, spiritual leaders and musicians all help to provide an in-depth look at the power of music.

Waking The Dead: Wounds

Friday, 3 September 2010

A body found in a disused tunnel has evidence of a burial ritual.

DSI Boyd and the Cold Case squad trace the victim to a group of middle-aged men on a self-empowerment weekend, led by a self-appointed American guru. He is identified as Chris Dearden, an air-conditioning salesman who went missing in 1996. He was killed by blows to the head.

Boyd and Grace (Sue Johnston) break the news of the discovery of the body to Dearden’s wife, Lucy, who admits that she was having an affair at the time with landscape gardener Frank Monk and they are still together.

Dearden’s 19-year-old son, Jimmy, refuses to believe the body is that of his father.

Later Eve gives Boyd devastating news about his son Luke.

The Bill: Taking A Stand

Saturday, 4 September 2010

Sgt .Callum Stone (Sam Callis) and PC Kirsty Knight (Sarah Manners) are called to the home of elderly widow Jill Peters (Claire Bloom), after a neighbour reported what he thought was a domestic disturbance. When they arrive, Mrs. Peters is extremely anxious but eventually opens the door, claiming to have been the victim of a burglary.

Upon further inspection, PC Knight believes that there is more to the case than just a burglary, especially when she notices the bed has been stripped and the washing machine is in operation. But Mrs. Peters is reluctant to say any more.

However, with gentle encouragement, Kirsty gets the woman to admit that she was raped. But after agreeing to an examination, the woman changes her mind.

Agreeing to come back the next day to speak to CID, Mrs Peters declines to be examined and when her son arrives, she asks him to take her home.

As the police scour the neighbourhood for any information that might help, Sgt. Stone suggests that PC Knight talk to Mrs Peters again. This time she remembers a man she exchanged harsh words with in the street some days before when he was dumping rubbish.

However, her description matches someone who’d come forward as a witness to seeing a man fleeing the scene, and who, when questioned, admits to burglary but nothing else.

Is Mrs Peters telling the truth?

Meanwhile, Sgt. Stone gets yet another message that his mother has called about his father. So why is he not returning her calls?

The Prisoner: Schizoid

Saturday, 4 September 2010

Six’s memory from his ‘real life’ is becoming clearer as his treacherous relationship with Two becomes even more strained.

313 (Ruth Wilson) is surprised - and secretly pleased - when Six (Jim Caviezel) comes to her house at night and tries to seduce her. But she is even more surprised when he appears to have no recollection of this the following day.

It soon becomes clear that Six has a doppelganger (known as 2 x 6). Somehow Two (Sir Ian McKellen) appears to have split Six in half. His passionate, uncontrollable, angry side is roaming the Village intent on killing Two. The reasoned, controlled Six must somehow stop his double from ruining his life.

Strangely, Two makes himself an easy target by giving up his status as Village leader for the day and letting himself become an ordinary Villager. He becomes 'Untwo'. Six realises that this is a ploy to goad Six into giving into the side of himself that seeks vengeance. If Two can get Six to cave into his baser instincts he will lose his conscience and lose control - allowing Two to manipulate him entirely.

While this battle plays out, Two has left his son 11-12 (Jamie Campbell Bower) in charge. He gives 11-12 the keys to the drugs cabinet and allows him to wake M2 (Rachel Blake) up. For the first time 11-12 gets to spend the day with his mother. She explains that they cannot escape to the real world because 11-12 doesn't exist there. One of the reasons she and Two invented The Village was so that they could create him as they were unable to conceive in the real world. M2 explains that The Village can only exist when she dreams it in her comatose state. When she wakes the holes appear and the very fabric of The Village is eroded. 11-12 is left with no choice but to put his mother back to sleep.

313 is plagued by dreams of her real world self. They are disturbing and 313 is increasingly afraid of who she is in New York. Two offers her the chance to glimpse her New York self but when she does she is scared by the mentally unstable, violent woman she appears to be.

Art Nation

This week on Art Nation, presenter, and an artist himself, Reko Rennie heads to Darwin for the 27th National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards to find out who wins the prestigious $40,000 major prize. Reko is interested to see that as a result of the increasing number of Indigenous artists using new media in their art practice, a New Media Award has been added to the other much sought after awards, these include the General Painting Award, the Bark Painting Award, the Work on Paper Award and the Wandjuk Marika Memorial 3D Award.

Art Nation also catches up with Jonsi the enigmatic lead singer of Icelandic band Sigur Ros. Currently touring Australia with his partner musician and visual artist Alex Sommers, Jonsi talks about his new solo album Go and his love of the natural world. Inspired by visual art, landscapes and the people of Iceland, Jonsi creates arresting and compelling sounds with his unmistakable voice.

The Guilty Pleasures segment sees none other than Liz Ann McGregor, Director of the MCA. Liz Ann confesses the shocking and amusing story of how her love affair with literature went horribly wrong. She’s a crime fiction addict - but not just any crime fiction - it seems the darker, the steamier, the more gruesome and macabre the story the better.

Closing the program is a performance in the Art Nation studio by Skipping Girl Vinegar, the popular Melbourne-based indie rock band, named after ‘Audrey’ the Skipping Girl Vinegar sign, located in Abbotsford, Victoria.

Art Nation will be repeated on ABC2 – Sunday, August 29 at 7.00pm.

Talking Heads

This week on Talking Heads, Peter Thompson’s guest is Fiona McIntosh, an author who has become something of a superstar in the fantasy fiction world.

McIntosh only started writing a decade ago. She was 39 years old and having a mid-life crisis, when one day at the dentist she noticed an ad for a summer writing course in Hobart. Leaving her husband and twin boys at home, McIntosh headed to the Apple Isle, armed with a loose idea for a fantasy book.

By the time she was 40, she had written Betrayal, the first book of a fantasy trilogy, and had a publisher’s contract.

Since then there’ve been more than a dozen adult novels and five children’s books, many of them bestsellers internationally.

Her most recent book Fields of Gold reveals something of the extraordinary lives of McIntosh’s two grandfathers... both great adventurers and both the keepers of intriguing secrets.

Artscape: Chasing Shadows

“Newspapers say the only way for young Aboriginal fellas to make it big is to play football. That’s what I did, until I injured my knee and my football career was cut short. Now I plan to pursue a different dream. I want to be a rapper. I want to step outside my bedroom and reach people …”

Colin Darcy grew up in the mining town of Whyalla in country SA. He’s had his fair share of hard knocks. His father abandoned him as a baby, his mother died when he was 15, and he recently lost his older brother. Now 24 and living in Adelaide, Colin is making a new start in life as he and his two best mates, Damien and Johnny, from Whyalla, form a hip hop group called Shadows.

The Shadows have high hopes. They started writing raps about their personal experiences - growing up in a small town, family, racism and striving for success. But becoming stars doesn’t go as planned. Damien suffers from stage fright and Johnny just wants to party.

As the Shadows struggle to find their feet in the local music scene, Colin finds that writing lyrics forces him to confront his painful past and make hard decisions about his future. Life gets even more complicated when he becomes a role model for his fatherless nephew Jayden.

Chasing Shadows follows Colin and his mates over four months in the studio, in rehearsals and on stage. Will the band survive? Will the music help Colin find the peace – and the family – he’s been looking for?

Artscape: Chasing Shadows will be repeated on ABC2 - Sunday, September 05 at 6.30pm.

My Place: 2008 Laura

The Logie-winning series My Place is based on the Nadia Wheatley and Donna Rawlins children’s picture book of the same name, and is the story of one spot in South Sydney over 130 years. Starting in 2008, and taking us back to 1888, the series introduces us to 13 kids, all with a talent for some kind of trouble, each hiding up the same ancient fig tree, and each with a story to tell. It’s a rare child's eye view of the history of Sydney.

Episode 1: Laura 2008

Laura and her friend Soriya are mucking around a dinghy near the canal. When it floats out into the bay and starts to sink, they bail frantically using a container they find in the dinghy. It’s fruitless and they swim to shore leaving the sinking boat. Then Laura discovers that the dinghy belongs to her family’s landlord Michaelis and they have just bailed out the ashes of his beloved dead dog. Laura and the now frazzled Soriya are consumed by guilt. Laura feels terrible for Michaelis but can’t find a way to own up. It’s 2008 and the Prime Minister is trying to do the same thing with her mob.

The New Inventors

Hosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors is bursting with the innovative and the imaginative, the unique and the unusual, the fantastic and the fascinating.

Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: futurist and author Mark Pesce, science broadcaster Bernie Hobbs, and materials engineer Veena Sahajwalla.

Inventions featured on the program:

SERVAL BATPHONE – by inventor Paul Gardner-Stephen from SA

Ordinary mobile phones rely on towers, underground wires, and other expensive infrastructure. That infrastructure can be damaged by natural disasters and war, and in many areas it is difficult or impossible to install, leaving vast tracts of land without coverage, often in areas of great need. Inventor Paul Gardner-Stephen was inspired while watching the earthquake disaster in Haiti unfold, as he noticed how long it took to get communications restored after the quake hit.

The Serval Project, named after a problem-solving African wildcat, aims to provide fast, cheap, robust and effective telecommunications systems where conventional phone infrastructure has been destroyed or is not cost-effective. The Project consists of two systems. The first is a temporary, self-organising, self-powered mobile network for disaster areas, formed with small phone towers dropped in by air. The second is a permanent system for remote areas that requires no infrastructure, using specially designed mobile phones operating on unlicenced frequencies, called the Batphone.

KNOT LOCK – by inventor Grahame Taylor from QLD

The swivel braid knot is one of the most secure knots for tying hooks and lures to fishing lines. But a lot of people find it really hard to tie these knots, especially those who have poor vision or conditions that affect their hands. Even an average person can have trouble. When you're out on a boat trying to tie these knots your hands are usually covered in muck, and bobbing around on the water doesn’t make it any easier.

Grahame Taylor is the founder of a local inventors club. He was inspired to make his invention from drinking a beer– no, really! He was looking at a bottle opener which had a corkscrew. He started playing with the corkscrew and a piece of line and found that weaving it on several times created a knot. He took this concept and turned it into a fishing hook attachment that creates a knot three times faster and is stronger than any conventional knot.

HALO – by inventor Hayley Warren from WA

Physiotherapists measure a patient’s joint angles to assess their injury and track their improvement. They do this using a device called a goniometer. These devices are completely manual, leaving them open to misinterpretation. A wrong measurement could be mistaken for improvement, leading to a patient being discharged from hospital too early.

28-year-old inventor and physiotherapist Hayley Warren has developed HALO, the world’s first digital goniometer. The device gives therapists a digital reading, eliminating the possibility of an incorrect reading, making the process accurate, reliable and repeatable.

Catalyst

In Defence of the Flying Fox

Flying foxes are vilified for their behaviour, such as feasting on fruit orchards and trees in our Botanic Gardens, as well as being carriers of the rare but deadly Hendra virus. But, how much do we really know about these fruit bats?

In Melbourne and Sydney, the Royal Botanic Gardens face large scale destruction by many thousand strong colonies of bats. They’re tearing the trees apart. Some say the bats must move because they are destroying valuable and rare trees, while others say that they are simply part of urban wildlife and we have to learn to co-exist with them. But for garden managers, it’s reached crisis point.

Paul Willis looks at why these much maligned creatures are appearing more in our urban environments and what measures are being taken to safely relocate them out of the Botanic Gardens.

Indoor Air

When we think of air pollution, images of billowing smokestacks or other industrial outpourings most commonly spring to mind. But perhaps we should be focusing a little closer to home, in fact inside our homes! Air quality in the outdoor environment is thoroughly researched and regulated, but little is known about the air inside our homes.

Tanya Ha investigates a new indoor air quality survey conducted by CSIRO of 40 households in Melbourne.

The E=mc2 diet

It’s the most famous equation in physics...E=mc2. But you don’t hear it discussed in relation to weight loss – at least not until Bernie Hobbs puts her unique spin on it.

Emperor Penguins

Right now, in the depths of a harsh Antarctic winter, Emperor Penguin eggs are hatching. At temperatures of 40 degrees below zero, Emperor Penguins breed in the coldest environment of any bird species. While in Antarctica, Mark Horstman met a seabird ecologist who has spent decades unravelling the mysteries of where Happy Feet goes when he – or she - leaves home.
