Reliable access to electrical power is a
basic requirement o modern society,
in private lie, in the public sector and in
industry. Our challenge is to be the mar-
ket's leading developer and manuacturer
o high voltage equipment. The goal is to
enable sae and eective transer and dis-
tribution o electrical power with the leastpossible environmental impact.
Development in recent years has
ocused on fnding solutions that increase
availability in power grids. Our modern
high voltage equipment can make sub-
stantial contributions in improving the
standard o living or consumers o elec-
tricity all over the world.
High voltage technology is a core activity with
long traditions at ABB. The center o operations isin Ludvika, Sweden, where many innovative ideas
have been born and realized. Today's operations
are more intensive than ever. We are the world's
largest manuacturer o high voltage equipment
and have customers in most countries. Our pro-
duction o surge arresters, circuit breakers, instru-
ment transormers, capacitors and substation mod-
ules is conducted with advanced production tech-
nology in modern plants that maintain extremely
high levels o quality.
Operational reliability is one o the most impor-tant qualities o our products and they have dem-
onstrated their robustness and reliability in all
types o operating environments and climates.
High Voltage Valley
We work in a stimulating technology environ-
ment The High Voltage Valley. Besides our own
operations in the area, there are a number o
other companies and organizations specializing
in high voltage technology, including STRI's high
voltage laboratory and ABB's own high power andhigh voltage laboratory. The common goal is to
urther develop high voltage technology so that
it becomes even better at supporting sustainable

Surge arrester monitor
EXCOUNT-II is a user riendly
device or monitoring both
surge arresters and overvoltages
in power grids. The device isconnected to a surge arrester
in the same way as traditional
counters. In supplements to reg-
istration o total overvoltages,
EXCOUNT-II provides inorma-

Our high voltage circuit breakers are available in
both puer and Auto-PuerTM designs. The
breaking medium is SF6gas. The HPL puer
circuit breaker has been manuactured and rened
since the 1970s and demonstrates exceedingly
high switching reliability, rom small inductive andcapacitive currents to short-circuit currents o up
to 80 kA.
The LTB Auto-Puer circuit breaker was
developed during the 1980s. The dierence in
comparison to a conventional puer circuit
breaker is that it breaks using the arc's own
energy. Both the HPL and LTB have break times
shorter than two periods and thus minimize
damage to the power system i a short circuit
should occur. Because all o our circuit breakers
use our unique patented contact system o
silver-plated copper, the circuit breakers attain
high perormance and long service lives. For
operation, our well-proven spring operating mech-
anism is used, assuring high operational reliability.
The motor operating mechanism Motor DriveTM
is now also available as an option or LTB circuit
breakers.
Disconnecting circuit breakers
The Combined disconnecting circuit breakers
comply with the requirements or both
disconnectors and circuit breakers, and have been
tested in accordance with the IEC standard or
disconnecting circuit breakers. Disconnecting
circuit breakers can thereore replace the
conventional combination o circuit breakers
and separate disconnectors in high voltage
substations. This permits compact substation
layouts with high availability and minimal
maintenance.

Instrument transormers
Our complete and modern product assortmentencompasses current transormers and inductive
and capacitor voltage transormers in the voltage
range 36 800 kV.
They are oil-insulated and most are lled with
quartz sand, which is a unique ABB solution
entailing that the amount o oil can be minimized.
Our instrument transormers are primarily used
or revenue metering, control, indication and relay
protection.
All instrument transormers are customer-
adapted or the preerred metering and protec-tion classes, and all environments and climates. I
requested, we can supply most types with silicone
rubber insulators.
The instrument transormers can be easily inte-
grated with our substation modules, withdrawable
circuit breakers (WCB) or disconnecting circuit
breakers (DCB). And with a simple bracket, they
can be combined with our conventional circuit
breakers.
Our instrument transormers are produced in
modern and highly automated plants with veryhigh levels o cleanliness to assure high quality.
Surge arresters
Our well-known EXLIM and PEXLIM surgearresters are both based on ABB's high quality
zinc oxide block, which is characterized by very
good energy absorbing capabilities, high saety
margins and long service lie. EXLIM has porcelain
insulators while PEXLIM has insulators o silicone
rubber.
The PEXLIM assortment oers considerable fexi-
bility through low weight, and opens opportunities
or new application areas, such as line arresters.
The low weight simplies installation and permits
mounting in tight spaces and at nearly any angle. The assortment covers all existing applications
or system voltages 52 800 kV with line dis-
charge classes 2 5.

Power capacitors
Capacitors ll an important unction in transmis-
sion and distribution networks. Eciency in net-
works, as well as voltage, quickly decrease whenburdened with reactive power, harmonics and
transer o dissipation power.
Eciency improvements are normally achieved
through reactive power compensation as close to
the load as possible. Overloads on transormers,
lines and cables are avoided through the instal-
lation o a need-adapted capacitor bank that is
either connected in series or in parallel with the
network.
Harmonics
Harmonics in a network create several types
o problems, or example, losses in machines
and apparatuses, disturbances in overriding and
adjoining networks, equipment ailures and reso-
nance problems between the network's inductive
and capacitive parts. Measures or dampening
harmonics vary depending on the type o load in
which they are generated and their location in the
network.
Filters
ABB supplies custom lter solutions, both activeand passive lters, depending on the nature o the
problem. Passive lters are supplied as band pass
(BP), high pass (HP) or C-lters. Our compre-
hensive assortment o high voltage applications
embraces both conventional HiQ oil-impregnated
capacitors and DryQ dry-insulated capacitors.
QBANK open shunt capacitor banks are avail-
able or voltages up to 550 kV.
CHARM, open banks or lter applications are
supplied as BP, HP or C-lters, rated up to 550 kV.
For intermediate voltage networks, there
are enclosed banks SIKAP and ABBACUS, or
increased personal saety. ABBACUS is suppliedwith automatic power regulation in several steps.
Banks or special applications, such as pole
installation, container-built lters, three-phase
units, grading capacitors, etc. are also available.
DryQ
The DryQ dry capacitor represents the latest in
capacitor technology, making it possible to build
shunt banks in a more cost-eective and environ-
mentally riendly manner. The lack o impregnat-
ing oil eliminates the risk or oil leakage, and con-
sequently, the risk or re. Banks with DryQ are
supplied as complete units with associated rames,
enabling rapid installation and commissioning.

ABB has extensive experience in building substa-
tions or high voltage systems. This experience is
very benecial in development o our high voltage
equipment. Because it embraces all types o highvoltage equipment needed in a modern substa-
tion, we can coordinate development o the various
equipment types so that they t together in an
optimal manner.
An example o this is the development o our
compact substation modules, where today's nearly
maintenance-ree high voltage circuit breakers
permit the elimination o conventional maintenance-
intensive disconnectors. This reduces the need o
removing busbars rom service, enabling simpler
busbar solutions. With our modern high voltage
circuit breakers as a base, we oer two alternatives
that provide opportunities to both simpliy
substations and save space.
Withdrawable circuit breakers
The withdrawable circuit breaker is designed to
constitute a part o a complete type-approved
substation. The circuit breaker is trolley-mounted
and is moved between the closed and open posi-
tions using a motorized moving device. The station-
ary primary contacts are maintenance-ree.
With the withdrawable circuit breaker as a base,we can provide complete, type-tested circuit breaker
bay modules including busbars. The high voltage
equipment includes all the necessary unctions or
a circuit breaker bay and can be supplied in high
prole congurations or outdoor substations and
in low prole congurations or indoor substations.
IMB current transormers can be installed on the
circuit breaker module's rame
Line entrance bays, which can include voltage
transormers, grounding switches and surge arrest-
ers, are also in the assortment.
Disconnecting circuit breakers
In a disconnecting circuit breaker, the disconnecting
unction is conducted by the circuit breaker's own
contacts, which are well-protected in the break-ing chamber. A disconnecting circuit breaker thus
replaces the conventional combination with a circuit
breaker and separate disconnector. A reliable inter-
locking system in combination with a motorized
grounding switch and clear indication o the contact
position provide ull personal saety.
