Kessab on the chessboardof international politicsBY EDMOND Y. AZADIAN
On March 21, the occupation of theArmenian town of Kessab in Syria, byAl Nusra terrorists was simply anotherepisode for the world media watchers. But for the 2,000 Armenian residentsof the town who were evacuated toLatakia, 50 kilometers south ofKessab, it was a repeat performance ofthe Armenian Genocide, which hadstarted 99 years ago.
Turkish leaders are frustrated thatthe first genocide could not fullyaccomplish its goal, allowing survivorsto scatter around the world and telltheir stories and thus give a black eyeto Turkey, which is striving to prove tothe world its democratic and humanrights credentials.
One expression of the Turkish frus-tration is the two-decade-long block-ade of Armenia, aiming for the latter’sextinction.
To complement its genocidal poli-cy, Turkey has been using the war inneighboring Syria to settle scores withthe Armenians, within its broader poli-cy of serving Israel’s regional ambi-tions.
The attack on Kessab is nothingless than genocidal. The mercenarieshired, trained and fed by Turkey aremodern-day barbarians whose atroci-ties equal those perpetrated by theOttoman Turks and Nazis againstArmenians and Jews.
Of all the American media personal-ities, the most conservative, GlenBeck, was so outraged that he shout-ed, “We are backing cannibals!”
The Armenian news media providedthe detailed coverage of Kessabaggression, but except some sparseinformation provided by the BBC inLondon, Liberation in France andRussian TV RT, there was a unani-mous blockade of news about Kessab;an organized silence which is tanta-mount to a blatant collusion with thecriminals.
No one needs to be a high govern-ment official or a news analyst to fig-ure out that the occupation of Kessabby terrorists was organized by Turkey, despite Turkish Foreign MinisterAhmet Davutoglu’s denial that thenews was manufactured by “evil-mind-ed” media people.
Consider this: without Turkey’scooperation and direct involvement, agroup of mercenaries, perched onAmerican tanks and armed with anti-aircraft rockets could not freely crossthe border to invade the town ofKessab while a Turkish air force planeshot down a Syrian Mig-34, which hadbeen trying to block the invasion.
“It looks like Turkey has deliberate-
ly brought down that Mig-34,” said aNATO source to Al-Monitor. “Wedoubt that there was any threat toTurkey. It looks like Turkey tookdown this Syrian jet to help the radicalgroups.”
While Turkish leaders were in blan-ket denial mode, a leak uncovered theentire plot. On March 27, 2014,Information Clearinghouse reportedthat access to YouTube had been cutoff in Turkey after an explosive leak ofaudiotapes that appeared to show min-isters talking about provoking militaryintervention in Syria, using the protec-tion of the Tomb of Soleyman Shah, grandfather of the founder of theOttoman Empire, as a pretext. This isvery much in line with the modusoperandi of the Turkish state, whichcreated similar incidents in 1955 bydispatching a terrorist to Salonika,Greece, to plant a bomb at AtaturkHouse, to provoke the September 6atrocities against Armenians, Greeksand Jews in Istanbul.
Of course, no one can matchTurkish cynicism, when the TurkishForeign Ministry is offering to provideloving care to 2,000 Armenians, whomit had dislodged from their homes dat-ing back 500 years. Indeed, Turkey’sForeign Ministry has released a com-muniqué which says, in part, “TheTurkish Foreign Ministry had notifiedthe relevant UN bodies that ‘SyrianArmenians residing in Kessab regioncould be admitted in Turkey too andprotection could be provided to them.’Also, the representatives of theArmenian community were informedof the matter through official chan-nels.”
The Kessab attack was a disasterwaiting to happen and certain factorscoincided and conspired in its making;the corruption-riddled Erdogan’simage needed a revamp, especiallyduring the municipal elections inTurkey — to make or break theIslamic party’s future — that domesticbravado certainly paid off handsomelywhen the Turkish raid on Kessab wasaccompanied by the shooting down ofthe Syrian jet, under trumped-upcharges that it had violated Turkishairspace.
Another factor was that forDavutoglu, this attack served as areminder that Turkey was still capableof committing genocide with impunity, thus blunting the impact of the centen-nial.
Turkey’s relations have beenimproving with Israel after PrimeMinister Benjamin Netanyahu’s apolo-gy to Erdogan and a package dealworked out between Turkey and Israelto compensate the victims of the Mavi

Program Remembers Genocide, Boston
Marathon Bombings, Governor Patrick
Pays Tribute to Armenian-Americans
By Alin K. Gregorian

BOSTON — A large contingent of Armenian-Americans and their supportersgathered at the State House’s Great Chamber to mark the 99th commemorationof the Armenian Genocide. The program was noted by poignant remembrancesof the Boston Marathon bombings, which had forced the cancellation of lastyear’s commemoration, the attacks on the town of Kessab in Syria, as well asthe recent death of a fixture in the community, Very Rev. Raphael Andonian.
Participating in the program was outgoing Massachusetts governor, DevalPatrick, who entered the chamber to thunderous applause and a standing ova-tion. “There is no better governor that we have had in the Commonwealth,” saidHouse Speaker Robert DeLeo (D-Winthrop) in his introduction, asa visibly touched Patrickaddressed those assembled.
“I wanted to offer an officialgubernatorial welcome to theArmenian community,” he said. “Iam struck by how poignant it is”to attend the commemorationprogram in his last year as gover-nor, he added.
“You welcomed me as a candi-date nine years ago. It was amoment in the campaign wheremy human rights [credentials]were called into question,” he said. “I was overwhelmed by the experience andthe attacks on who I was and what I was.”
He recalled that when he came to the commemoration as a candidate nineyears ago, he received a warm welcome from the Armenian community and thatreenergized him. “I wanted to come and thank you. You made our
Commonwealth a better place and I amhere to say that you have made thisman a better man,” he said.
He praised the members of theArmenian community for their effortstoward funding and completing theArmenian Heritage Park in Boston, afirst-of-its-kind private and public col-laboration, the designer of which,Donald Tellalian, received the jointHouse and Senate Resolution.
State Sen. William Brownsberger(D-Belmont) introduced honoreeTellalian and praised him for coming
up with the concept and design of the park and working for years on the projectas a volunteer. “Each part [of the abstract sculpture and pool] symbolizes theimmigrant experience,” he added. He said the park was a “beautiful public spaceand a generous gift” to the state by the Armenian people.
The humble Tellalian thanked everyone. “I really am most honored. This 12-year effort began as a mere possibility,” he said. It came about, he said, “as aresult of extraordinary collaborations” between the Armenian Heritage ParkFoundation, the professional team assembled and city and state bodies.
In addition to those named above, he thanked specifically the Rowes Wharfand North End communities for “their unwavering support.”

That got me thinking
Our phones, our livesLast week, I forgot to take my phone when I left home for school. I
remembered before getting on the bus, and I panicked for a few seconds. Iwas already late, there was no time for me to go back home and take it. Iwould have to go a whole day without texting my best friends, who go todifferent schools. I would have to go a whole day without being able toreach my friends and ask them ‘’where are you?’’ on my way to the cafete-ria. I would have to borrow someone’s phone to call my mom at the end ofthe day to tell her that I’m on my way to the metro. This is terrible, Ithought, it’s going to be such a weird day!
That’s when I wondered: When did I become so addicted to my cellphone? Whether I realized it or not, my phone had an integral role in myday. How come? When did things become this way? I check my phone everyso often even when I’m doing my homework. I use my phone as a watch, since I don’t have a watch. I use my phone to write down notes that I wantto remember (even though I never check them afterwards, I’m more of aPost-it kind of gal).
The problem is, there is no way to go back to a time where cell phonesdid not control the world. We have reached a point where things only startgetting more and more technological and there is no way to stop it.Recently, I’ve come to realize that instead of fighting it and feeling threa-tened by it, we should just hop on the ride and go along. You know whatthey say, if you can’t beat them, join them. You might find that a certaindevice is useless; and a lot of them are. However, sometimes, you just haveto go along with it. That’s the way the world runs now.
All this to say that I find myself rejecting new things at first because Idon’t like the sound of it, or because the fact that it’s a new technologyputs me off. Although we should be as careful as we can to avoid beingcompletely controlled by our devices, I think that a negative feeling towardsthem is not always necessary.

THE YOUTH CORNER
Emotional Massachusetts State House...Cont’d from page 9
The park came about, he noted, as a result of language introduced by PeterKoutoujian into the Big Dig project.
Koutoujian, who in turn introduced the keynote speaker, spoke first about theBoston Marathon Bombing last year, which saw him in the thick of the action inWatertown. He also got choked up as he paid tribute to Andonian, calling him“an amazing friend to our community, always smiling and always willing to joinwith us.” A moment of silence was observed for Andonian.
He praised Geragos for his legal victories in the courts against insurance com-panies that sold policies in the Ottoman Empire during the Armenian Genocide, resulting in winning a total of $37.5 million. Now, he said, Geragos is suing thegovernment of Turkey itself.
Geragos started off by joking, “You guys are the original Glendale.” He added,“The Armenian Heritage Park speaks volumes to that. It is just amazing.”
He then spoke about the importance of having the US government and thepresident affirm and acknowledge the Armenian Genocide. He said once theypass resolutions, his job of litigating and seeking justice is that much easier.Armenians, he said, need to focus on the “three ‘R’s, recognition, restitution andreparation.”
The Turkish government, he said, “fears reparations. Why do you think theypay retired legislators to work against [recognition]?”
He encouraged more Armenians to get involved with politics so as to get thecommunity’s concerns addressed.
State Rep. Jonathan Hecht (D-Watertown), opened the program. “Every year, for nearly three decades the State Legislature has convened this event to honor
the survivors of the Armenian Genocide,” he said. “We are here to celebrate theresilient spirit of the Armenian people.”
Hecht paid tribute to the late speaker of the house, George Keverian, underwhose watch the annual State House Armenian Genocide Commemoration hadstarted. He praised DeLeo for his unwavering support in his introduction, andlauded him “as a person and as a leader.”
DeLeo was one of the many who recalled the events of one year ago, whichhad caused a lockdown of the city and the cancellation of the commemoration.
As for the Armenian Genocide, he said, “We will never forget the 1.5 millionArmenians killed. We will carry on their legacy by ensuring the world does notforget.”
He added that he was proud to support the resolution that MassachusettsRep. James McGovern (D-Worcester) had proposed, condemning the attacks inKessab, Syria.
DeLeo paid tribute to the Armenian community for its contributions to vari-ous sectors, including the construction of the Armenian Heritage Park. “We haveto consider the gratitude we owe the Armenian community. We have to makesure that the human spirit outshines epic infamy.”
Special applause was also reserved for a group of high school students fromWilmington, Mass., who have studied the Armenian Genocide, writing essaysand even a symphony on the subject.
Many other human rights organizations and three consuls were present forthe commemoration, but thunderous applause and a standing ovation wasreserved for four survivors of the Rwandan Genocide.
Three survivors of the Genocide were present, but many more were repre-sented by the Stand Up for Your Survivor posters, a program initiated by AnahisKechejian, a freshman at Northeastern.

Marmara incident. Thus, the groundhas been paved for reviving hegemon-ic prospects in the Middle Eastthrough a three-way cooperationbetween Turkey, Saudi Arabia andIsrael.
On the international scene, the UShad two main reasons to prod Turkeyinto action. The first was driven bydomestic considerations to placate thehawks at home who were clamoringfor Washington to set up a no-fly zonein Syria to help the advance of terror-ists against the Damascus regime. Fora reluctant Obama administration, theTurkish incursion into Syrian airspacewas an effective substitute to a no-flyzone, which could involve putting USpersonnel in harm’s way.
The second reason was of a moreglobal nature. Despite all the rhetoric, the Crimean crisis has been a diplo-matic defeat for Washington, requiringa powerful response to Russianadvances in the world’s troubledregions. Therefore, Syria’s main ally,Moscow, had to sustain a defeat tocompensate for its gain in Crimea.Western and Turkish surrogates suc-ceeded in their drive to occupy Kessabon the Mediterranean, despite thepresence of the Russian fleet nextdoor in Tartous.
As far as Al-Nusra and Ahrar Al-Sham Al-Qaeda terrorists are con-cerned, they needed a victory after aseries of defeats at the hands of theSyrian Army and Hezballah volunteers.Kessab being the closest region toAssad’s power base on theMediterranean was considered astrategic prize.
The looting, beheadings and burn-ing down of churches are continuingin the area, therefore no one with astraight face can claim that theseTurkish surrogates are there to bringpeace and democracy to Syria.
The reaction of Armenians has beenweak and inadequate, primarilybecause a miniscule country in theCaucasus and a dispersed and disorga-nized diaspora are no match for the
powers behind the war in Syria andthe consequent attack on Kessab.
In the first place, the Armenian gov-ernment has reacted very cautiouslyby sending a parliamentary delegationin an unofficial capacity. The newsmedia in Armenia was caught offguard because of its endemic intro-verted nature and because of its gener-al ignorance about basic facts onDiaspora Armenians. Many journaliststhere just found out where Kessab wasand why it was important toArmenians.
The relief effort is underway to helpthe refugees huddled in Latakia, andCatholicos Aram I of the Great See ofCilicia has been able to mobilize allsegments of the Armenian communityin the region.
No similar coordination seems tobe in the works in the western coun-tries, where challenges and opportuni-ties are great in rallying support forKessab Armenians. It is just and prop-er to decry Turkey’s sinister actionsbut those alone do not help the victimsnor do they steer the West into a dif-ferent course in Syria. Appeals and let-ters of protest are necessary elementsto sensitize the world public opinion, but they would be more effective if theentire community mobilized as onewhen approaching this outrageoustragedy.
Armenians have been demonstrat-ing in front of the Turkish embassyand consular offices in Paris and LosAngeles, respectively, but that move-ment has to be amplified to drown outthe unified message from all Turkishlegations around the world.
All of a sudden, a historic Armenianregion has appeared on the chess-board of world politics and we haveyet to wake up and get organized for aproper response. With the flux of polit-ical tides, all Armenians the worldover need to coordinate for contin-gency plans with the government ofArmenia to be able to face similarcalamities which are bound to happenagain in that volatile region.
On Monday evening 14th of April, the adversaryyet again violated the ceasefire and fired shots inthe direction of Armenia’s border villages.
