    Dog dazeBy Norman McGuire andOscar

March 13Had a talk with Oscarthis morning. I asked him

if it got cold last night andhe looked at the sky thenat me. I told him it was notmy fault that the weatherhad got cold. I dont thinkhe cared what I thought. Itold him that if he didnt likethe weather he could take itup with GOD. He looked atme and howeled. Blew air

theu his lips snorted andfell over on my feet.I wish he wouldnt do thatas he weaighs a ton. I toldhim if he was so inclined tonot talk with me this morn-ing I was going back intothe house. He rolled over onhis back and waved his fatlittle legs at me.I came in and got a cupof coffee and went andwatched him thru the win-dow. He was in the front ofthe house by now settingdown. Now you might havea hard time believing thisbut soon he put out hisfront paws and I think thathe was praying. Now I dontknow what dogs pray forbut I bet he was talkingabout the weather. Weathercan be fickle. I never learnedto talk with the weather. Iask for sun and get rain.I ask for a cool breeze ona summer day and get ablast furnice of wind. I askfor rain and get a drought.Weather has a mind of itsown and dont listen to meand I dont think it will lis-ten to Oscar....but then Ihave been wrong before.

March 16I am kinda put out thismorning. Oscar was shot.I first thought he had beenin a fight but I could onlyfind one puncture mark. Ilooked at it real close andthat is when I saw the pel-let. He had been shot in theside with a pellet gun.It was in pretty deep andit was a fine ol'time gettingit out. Oscar felt I am sureby the time it was all over

that he would just haverather kept his pellet thento have me remove it.I held him down andmanaged to get it out. Icleaned the wound and putsome antibiotc ointmenton it. I shaved the hairaround the wound then puta bandage on it. He seemedpleased to have the ban-dage as the other dogs outhere didnt have one andabout his brush with death.I checked around andfound out it was a six yearold kid that had done it. Italked with his dad abouthis kid going on hunt-ing expediations and thatOscar was not a lion ,tigeror bear oh my.He said he would takecare of it and when I left thedad and kid were haveing along talk with a small keenswitch doing the talking. What is it with peoplethat they give a kid a gunout here then turn themsoose. It is the same wayin the summer time. Peopleare always bringing a pet tothe lake and then looseingthem. Before the summeris half over I end up feedinga pack of dogs that I donteven owen. Oh well guessthat is my lot in life....to tellthe truth it is ok with me.

March 16I love kids. My wife saysI am still one and keepshopeing I will grow up someday. I asked her why shouldI grow up? She said well atleast act your age. I told herI was acteing my age then Ipouted. Oh well back to the

story. I was watching as thechurch buss drove up andpicked up a heard of kidsthen set off down the road. Icould hear laughter and joyas they drove off. Made myheart feel good to know thatthere is still some laughterin the world that is not fakebut real.I love to watch a kid whenI teach them something. They get this look of wonderin there eyes and you cantell that they are thinkingit thru. I told Oscar aboutit and how I felt. He setand watched the buss -droveaway then looked at me and

howled. I asked him why hewas howeling now and hejust looked at me. I thengot on the ground and thetwo of us had a good longwrestling match with himwinning as he always does.Soon I got tired of it and gotup to come into the house.I walked in with Oscaron my heels and my wifesaid see your just a bigkid. How many other mendo you see playing withthere dogs like that? I toldher I didnt care what otherpeople did that I playedwith Oscar because we bothliked it and it was fun.
