American Academy of Religion Plenary Session Friday, 1:00–1:45pm Hinckley Center 3rd Floor Assembly Hall Pamela Klassen University of Toronto “Telling the Story of Radio Mind: Missionaries and the Spiritual Invention of Nations”

At a time when some governments have undertaken processes of apology, truth, and reconciliation for colonial violence and dispossession, how can scholars of religion reflect on the significance of our work for these indeterminate gestures of repair? To hazard an answer to this question, I reflect on my process of narrating the story of an early-twentieth-century Anglican missionary in the Pacific Northwest who, after years of doing the work of Christian colonial settlement on Indigenous land, came to think that telepathy was the solution to everything from class warfare to religious divisions. At the same time that he experimented his way to the unorthodox metaphysics of “radio mind”, Archbishop Frederick Du Vernet was condemning the abuses of the Canadian church-state residential school system, which forcibly took Indigenous children from their families in order to assimilate them to Christianity, the English language, and acceptance of the sovereignty of the Dominion of Canada. As state-sponsored historical retellings such as the multi-volume report of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission on residential schools are met with both Indigenous critiques and racist backlash, what difference does it make to tell a story of radio mind?

Pamela Klassen is Professor in the Department for the Study of Religion at the University of Toronto. She currently holds the Anneliese Maier Research Award from Germany's Humboldt Foundation, in support of a five-year collaborative project entitled “Religion and Public Memory in Multicultural Societies.” Her writings include: Blessed Events: Religion and Home Birth in America (Princeton UP, 2001) and Spirits of Protestantism: Medicine, Healing, and Liberal Christianity (University of California Press, 2011), which won an AAR Award of Excellence. She has two books

forthcoming in spring 2018 with the University of Chicago Press: The Story of Radio Mind: A Missionary’s Journey on Indigenous Land, and Ekklesia: Three Inquiries in Church and State, co-authored with Paul Christopher Johnson and Winnifred Fallers Sullivan.

Society of Biblical Literature Plenary Session Saturday, 1:00–1:45pm Hinckley Center 3rd Floor Assembly Hall AnneMarie Luijendijk Princeton University “From Gospels to Garbage: The Life Cycle of Manuscripts”

Who copied, owned and used early Christian manuscripts? And why were such manuscripts found on ancient garbage heaps? In this talk I will present research for my current book project about the manuscripts found at the ancient trash heaps of the Egyptian city of Oxyrhynchus, a treasure trove of thousands of literary texts and documents written mainly on papyrus. I trace the life cycle of a manuscript from its inscription, its owners and readers and to its demise. I am particularly interested in the texts written and used by early Christians and matters of the sacredness of things. Methodologically, I draw on garbology and new philology.

AnneMarie Luijendijk is Professor of Religion at Princeton University and Chair of the Committee for the Study of Late Antiquity. In 2017, she became the Head of Wilson College, one of the six residential colleges at Princeton. Luijendijk is a scholar of the early church and a papyrologist. Hailing from the Netherlands, she was educated at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam (ThM 1996) and received her doctorate from Harvard Divinity School (ThD 2005). Her first book, Greetings in the Lord: Early Christians and the Oxyrhynchus Papyri (Harvard University Press, 2008), examines documentary papyri pertaining to early Christians in an Egyptian city. Her second book, Forbidden Oracles: The Gospel of the Lots of Mary

(Mohr Siebeck, 2014), gives the edition of a previously unknown early Christian oracle text preserved in Coptic and tells the story of the miniature manuscript that preserves this text. She is currently working on a book called From Gospels to Garbage.
