I sell donuts made from beans. Before AAK pre-financing I had to buy the beans, but now I can grow them myself. The extra money helps cover family expenses. I have managed to buy a bike and am now thinking about a motorbike, which will make life even easier.

Working with AAK has helped me become independent. I don’t need to ask for money or help from the family or neighbours anymore. We as women are stronger now and work together for the community. We fixed a road and built a small bridge to the village. Before AAK, we would not have had that kind of idea.

AAK help women to be organised. They provide us with money up front. That’s very important because it acts as working capital for my other business making sumbala (a condiment used widely across West Africa). In addition, it means I have some money left in case of problems.

With AAK’s pre-financing, a group of 26 women (which includes widows) has been able to start a vegetable garden. Each woman has a patch of land where they grow eggplants, tomatoes, onions and other vegetables as well as bananas. They use part of their produce to feed their families and sell the rest, thus contributing to their financial independence.

In 2009, AAK initiated a responsible sourcing project in Burkina Faso based on Fair Trade principles. Set up as a win-win between women who traditionally collect shea kernels and AAK, the project was called “Kolo Nafaso,” meaning “the house of benefits of shea kernels”. Thanks to its early success, the project has since matured into a new way of doing business for both AAK and women in West Africa. The main benefits for the women include:

• Increased income through direct trade that bypasses layers of middlemen

• Pre-financing for greater economic stability and independence

• A guaranteed minimum price that provides reassurance

• Possibility of bonuses at end of season

• Training in how to improve quality and, as a result, increase their income

• Jute bags and logistical support

• No strings attached – can sell to whomever they choose

A true win-winTestimonials from women in the villages show how increased income has empowered them to work with other agricultural products as well, as the season for shea is rather limited. It has also enabled them to make other improvements in their communities. For AAK, the programme provides direct contact with those who do the lion’s share of the work. By helping them

out both financially and educationally, we secure good- quality shea kernels that benefit us and our customers. Furthermore, the continued development and success of the Kolo Nafaso programme has resulted in yet another benefit for customers of AAK – 100% traceable liquid shea butter.

Our personnel in the region educate the women on how to process the shea kernels in order to obtain good quality for us and, in turn, better income for them. We also teach them about the importance of preserving both old and new shea trees for future generations – a base criterion for ensuring sustainable availability of shea. And with the shortage of firewood in some areas, we also encourage them to use the shells as an alternative to cutting down trees. Since the start, the reach of the programme has grown dramatically.

The number of women participating in Kolo Nafaso grew from a couple of thousand to over ninety thousand in the first seven years.

Shea butters can be used in a variety of formulations, delivering moisturisation and conditioning effects to hair and skin.

It is well known that shea butter is today one of the most popular natural ingredients in personal care formulations due to its skin protecting and moisturising benefits. AAK has developed the original shea butter into a range of specialised cosmetic ingredients, fulfilling quality and functionality requirements of the cosmetic formulator. All of our Lipex shea butters are characterised by low odour and colour, good oxidation stability, and an elevated content of the characteristic shea unsaponifiables.

Versatile alternative to solid butterLiquid shea butter is an easy to use and efficient alternative to the solid butters. It is also more versatile in formulations due to the liquid character, making the formulations less heavy. In addition, liquid shea butter requires no melting during the production of end products, saving manufacturers time and energy. The function of the liquid shea butter is to provide emolliency and lubricity, as well as to deliver basic skin moisturisation, when used in concentrations from 2-5% and together

Lipex SheaLiquid™ TRwith other emollients. It also provides shine and softness to hair when formulated into conditioners and hair treatments. Lipex SheaLiquid TR is derived from shea kernels obtained through AAK’s responsible sourcing programme, Kolo Nafaso, and is traceably manufactured in our state-of-the-art processing facilities, ensuring high and constant quality.
