Twenty-Fifth Anniversary. The Armory Art Centerwas founded as a result of the closing of the NortonMuseum School. Like earlier 19th century art museums, atits inception the Norton Gallery was incorporated as theNorton Gallery and School of Art. However, by 1986 itsmission as an art school was discontinued and it becameknown as the Norton Museum of Art. Because a dedicatedgroup of artists and art teachers wanted to ensure thecontinuation of practical art instruction in Palm BeachCounty, The Armory Art Center came into being.

Seeking out a place to hold classes, they discovered thederelict Armory building. The historic Armory building, builtin 1939 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in ArtDeco style was designed by architect William Manley King. From 1939-1982 it was used as an armory and occupied bythe National Guard, but by the late 1980s after a period ofmultiple community uses, (including high school dances) itwas scheduled for demolition. Community activists, thePalm Beach County Cultural Council, artists, and teachersconvinced the City of West Palm Beach to spare the Armorybuilding from demolition.

.Transforming the abandoned classic Florida Art Decostructure into a vibrant space for art classes and artexhibitions, The Armory Art Center was incorporated as anot-for-profit on November 21, 1986. With generouscontributions from many patrons, most notably Robert andMary Montgomery and with the State of Florida HistoricPreservation and Cultural Facilities Grants, the Centeropened its doors in 1987. The Armory building was listedon the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Over the past twenty-five years the Armory haseducated students, recently increasing the studentpopulation (youth have increased 50% in the past twoyears), and exhibited works of art in more than 400 shows.Visiting Master Artists from all over the United States havetaught special classes; the opportunity to hone their artisticskills has been made available to more than 30 Artists-In-Residence, promising young artists given the opportunityto create a body of work while teaching.

In the past few years joint projects with other culturalinstitutions have led to workshops, exhibitions/lectures,and even classes which turned into creative businessesfor teens.

For more than twenty-five years the Armory ArtCenter has provided high quality art instruction to thecommunity in many media. It serves a diverse culturaland cross-generational student body. It is truly acommunity resource and an important institution in theregion. It is a place which affects people’s lives over thelong term, a place where all are welcome to beginlearning about art, or to continue in an advancedprogram of instruction. Classes for young people as wellas life-long learners are available. GalleryDecember 16, 2011-April 6, 2012Opening Reception: Dec.16, 2011, 6 - 8 pmThe inspiration for Mehler’s large-scale steel

sculptures comes from organic, natural mattersuch as fruits and seeds. The sculptures serveas a play between light fluid shapes and theseemingly insurmountable weight of themetal. At the same time, the rhythmic, fan-likestructure strongly suggests architectural andman-made forms. It is this ambivalencebetween the natural and the man-made thatmakes Mehler’s works so captivating.
