Background/Motivation

> Introduction of computer-based assessment (CBA) into the Federal Licensing Examination (Human Medicine) in the context of an overall redesign of the nation-wide exam (mandated by BAG)

> Challenging but interesting field for eAssessment:— high-stakes (federal licensing of physicians)— high-complexity (various question formats, use of video, sounds, images)— large-scale (650 candidates in multiple exams each year)— nation-wide (local testing at all medical faculties: BA, BE, GE, LA, ZH)

SIOUX: Ideal Foundation

> Legal Security— federal licensing examination is held to the highest standards,

legal complaints are not rare— SIOUX provides a digital signing mechanism (state-of-the-art)

> Reliability— infrastructure at different sites complicates tight control of

network and systems, but exams must not be interrupted— SIOUX allows continued operation in case of failures

> Modularity— SIOUX can be customized and interfaced with external modules

for the authoring and evaluation of exams

> Maturity— SIOUX is in productive use for large-scale summative exams
