138 A Royally-Initiated Path Towards a Heavenly Bangkok 139 His Majesty’s photographic talents were passed on to him at a young age by his mother. His initial attempts at photography began with his amateur role as personal photographer to his older brother, King Rama VIII, on the trips they made together to visit the Thai people. The King’s interest in photography deepened and became so serious that he even pursued the path of a career photographer by sending his works for publication in the Standard Magazine owned by HRH Princess Prem Purachatra. He continued sending his photographs to publishers even after he came to the throne. His Majesty is fond of taking photographs of his loved ones, including members of the royal family, and pictures reflecting his people’s lifestyles that he has taken on trips across the country. He takes pictures during his frequent car or helicopter trips and these require a quick decision to capture the scenes at hand. Most of his photographs are perfect in terms of their composition and content. More recently, His Majesty has applied his photographic skills to benefit his development works. The photographs he has taken have been used to help making decisions on the timely and effective alleviation of the sufferings of his people. The judgments based on these photographs have been so effective that a large number of royal projects have been conceived as a result. His Majesty’s photographic talent has provided an inspiration for many people, including members of the Photographic Society of Thailand under the Royal Patronage, which is an organization reserved for people with a special interest in this art. Many of these photographers have followed in the King’s footsteps. Photographs of Great Meaning and Sentiment

Themodern development of Thailand is
founded on the continual strengthening of
the country’s social, economic and natural
resource capital with a special focus on a
people-centered development approach.
According to this principle, improving the
quality of the people is of utmost importance
because it is the “people”whowill feel the full
bruntofboththepositiveandnegative impact
of such development efforts. It is also the
“people”whomust steer these development
measurestowardstheirdesiredgoals.
It is, therefore, crucial that all aspects ofthe quality of the people – physical, spiritual, their knowledge and skills – must be improved in order to promote the
city’s dynamism in becoming a city of distinction, stability and justice. It must also be a city that can implement the sustainable management of its natural resources and environment that will provide a solid foundation for a high standard of living and sustainable national development.
