2011 will be my 20th AAA conference!! I was
fortunate to happen upon a AAA brochure withinmy first three months as a new anesthesia
practice administrator. The networking and
education that I garnered from my first AAA
conference replaced what would have taken years
for me to have learned on my own. AAA is THE
premier anesthesia conference and I have never
missed the opportunity to get together with
my AAA friends since the first one I attended in
1991. And the best part is that I still learn many
new things at each AAA conference I attend ...I
am sure that #20 in Baltimore will not be any
different ... I am looking forward to it.

General Session: Engage Physicians TheKey to Evolving Your Group
Jack Silversin, DMD, DrPH, president, AMICUS, Cambridge, Mass.
Healthcare delivery must evolve rapidly if it is to meet the
changing market forces successfully. Anesthesia and pain
management groups need to respond to these same market
forces. While group administrators can see the challenge and
strategize how to respond, busy anesthesiologists may not be
as tuned in. They may question why the calls for change are
so loud and persistent. Their belief that its good enough to
continue to conduct business as usual can keep groups stuck
and prevent them from growing. To avoid getting stuck, groups
need to pursue new imperatives, such as helping hospitals
respond to the pressures of healthcare reform, redesigning their
own processes for greater efficiency and competing for doctors
and other providers who have more choice in terms of workingopportunities.
This session will provide you with the knowledge to:n Discuss how to address the emotional component
associated with many of the changes anesthesiologists are
being asked to make
n Describe leadership actions that promote the active
engagement of physicians
n Explain how to leverage the power of shared vision and
aligned expectations (a new compact) to help a group
evolve
Jack Silversin, DMD, DrPH is presidentof AMICUS, a healthcare consultingrm based in Cambridge, Mass. Formore than 25 years he has helpedexecutives of physician organizations, hospitals and health systems develop a
shared organizational vision, as well as strong leadership andgovernance to accelerate the implementation of change. Heis a highly regarded speaker and regular presenter at nationalconferences. A graduate of the Harvard University School ofDental Medicine, Silversin also holds a doctorate in public
health from Harvard University, where he serves as a memberof the faculty of medicine.
