Environmental problems and pollutionPort activities and discharges of different boats cause pollution of the sea and therefore decrease the diversity of underwater living organisms such as several types of fish.Rupture between the city and the seaBecause of the activities of the port, the presence of people there is not admitted. In addition, wide and fast roads separate the port from the rest of the city. Because of those reasnons, people -who have nothing to do there- shun the port. So they cannot benefit from access to the sea (visual access is maintained through the topography of Algiers).Historical attractvity and tourism opportunitiesThe history of the port of Algiers is several times millennia. All lovers of history and culture could find there their pleasure. The site is ideally suited for both tourists and autoctones wishing to know the history of the place.Recreational opportunitiesThis site has recreational character, conceals potential tourist and leisure:• The strategic location in the town;• Its excellent transport links via a rich network infrastructure;• The presence of many intersting places and square gardens near the port.

Function: industrial actions in the bay Size: approx. the entire bay

- when using the theatre as metaphor the marine industries becomes the actors and the city becomes the audience- this metaphor is extended when thinking of the port as the ‚fourth wall‘ a barrier between city and sea - the audience does not participate in the theatre they are only observers- when the port is moved who/what becomes the actor and what does the audience watch?

SCALE_SEEING THE CITY FROM THE SEA

PORT OF ALGIERS AS FOUND

Function: relationship of scale between port and citySize: approx. 5-6 kilometer

- the difference in scale between the pieces of the city and port occurs at opposite ends of the size spectrum - larger scaled objects are the commercial ships, french occupation era construction, and the Hotel Aurassi- small scale objects include the fishing and pleasure boats, the Casbah buildings and the people of the city - although the large objects become barriers in the city they are visual referances from the sea and help create the image of the city
