’67 Revere Reverie: Spring Edition 2018

After due deliberation, the newsletter team has given this newsletter the theme:

“Prescription: Murder and Other Stage Events”

The Homecoming Court is still a bevy of beauties! Argie Plakas Spithas-Miner, Sylvia Lermer McCauley, Merle Goff Searle, and Lydia Blalock Harto. We need one more picture, Mary Ellen Paulette Hartman.

From Dan Mortimer: I’m sure some of our classmates would be interested to hear I recently

ran into Buzzy Davis, Revere’s former custodian and friend to all, and he’s doing very well.

Mark Wilt: I played tuba and alto sax. My trouble with wind instruments: the spit. And  “Prescription Murder” marked the first appearance of the character Lt. Columbo.

Bob Stalnaker: I was in the Variety Show, Homecoming, Fashion Show and I think I was in A

Cappella Choir and the Debate Team. I don’t remember if the last two were during my Senior year. Memory failing I guess. (When memory fails, use the Yearbook and sure enough Bob is in the choir but not the debate team)  Diane Pierson Vincent: I made jumper outfits in Home Ec with Mrs. Rumbaugh for myself, four sisters, and a vest for my little brother Bobby who is now a Revere art teacher!   Steve Rhinesmith: For me it was Thespians, Variety Show, Senior Play and A Capella Choir.

Mike Allen and Jim Fickes as Batman and Robin in the ’66 Variety Show

totally cracked me up. In “Prescription: Murder” rehearsals Ron Reaoch and I started getting giggly during a “serious" moment when he delivered the line that my wife (whom I'd secretly strangled) was dead. It got progressively worse and we didn’t pull it back together until opening night - took every ounce of willpower that I had. Thanks, Ron!

Jean stewart: Mary Arnold Marchman also flew for American Airlines back when, as did Patty Abood ('65). Kelly Dowds Coffey ('85??) is still with AA, based in Miami. So much for little ol' RHS!    Vickie Mahaffey Mickie (Mickey): I have practiced Cosmetic Therapy for thirty-four years. In 1999 I purchased a laser hair remover, a purchase that sent me across the country teaching laser hair removal. Today I own two companies: About Face Cosmetic Therapy Center, and the Cosmetic Therapy Training Center. The Cosmetic Therapy Training Center affords me an avenue to educate. I love what I do! I have a beautiful daughter and five grandchildren. Julia Amberleigh Whiting was born Nov. 26, 2017, our first girl. What a treat to buy all those dresses! I would love to attend a Happy Hour, however Bath is 2 ½ hours from Columbus. Keep me posted! (editor - Any classmate willing to have a house guest?)

Mike McCauley and Steve Rhinesmith entertain.

At the Junior Varsity Show, Ray Oviatt sang a tenor solo, Handel’s ‘Comfort Ye.’ If you are curious just how difficult this is to sing, Google “Handel’s Comfort Ye” on youtube and you can listen to several renditions.

Jean Stewart: I enjoyed the bits about the Fashion Show in the last newsletter. I was one of the writers and contributors for three years. I refused to participate our Senior Year because I had a job. Mrs. Rumbaugh was furious and black balled me the only way she could - she gave me a very low "deportment" grade. Needless to say, I survived and the show did go on.

Sylvia Lermer Mcauley with style.

Nancy Frese Azneer: The Fashion Show was a yearly event for Home Economics that highlighted clothes we made. I was in it for two years and refused to participate in the third one. The teacher, whose name escapes me, threatened to flunk me if I wouldn’t do the show, but she didn’t. I just wasn’t the super model type (quit laughing!)  Vickie Mahaffey Mickie (Mickey): One of the funniest things I remember was in Graphic Arts my senior year. We called the teacher “Pinkie” behind his back as he had very light hair, would blush or turn pink (editor- Mr Myers?). One day I spilled opaque on the newspaper layout while it was on the light table. I was very sure that I had ruined the layout. I screamed “Pinkie I just made a terrible mess, I spilled the opaque! “Pinkie” turned towards me while turning “Pink” and just laughed at me! I was so embarrassed!   Mark Wilt shares: In the Senior Play,"Absence of a Cello," I played a physicist and amateur cellist. Opening night, Steve Rhinesmith had to ring the doorbell and Jane McIntyre was to answer it. Of course, the doorbell did not ring and all action came to a sickening halt. There was no door backstage for Steve to knock on. He could have sung out “Ring! Ring!” but that would have wreaked havoc to the verisimilitude. I glanced offstage to see the sound guy frantically checking the wiring. Argh! Ooga! I was stuck. Janie Hange, who played my wife, kept her composure. She suggested I play “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun” on the cello, still present center stage. Since I only played spit instruments, I was at a loss. I sat in the cello

chair and made a great show of tuning the instrument, muttering along, breathing deeply to stave off a heart attack. After a year or so, the doorbell rang. Jane let Steve in: Heart attack averted.  Nancy Frese Azneer: I did Mark Wilt’s makeup for “Absence of a Cello.” Fortunately, he doesn’t remember what a horrible job I did. He looked like an old woman, not the old, elegant gentleman he was supposed to be.   Dan Mortimer: I was in Marching, Concert, and Pep band. We were in numerous competitions, won some, placed in others. The marching band was one of the larger ones of the time; we were called the ‘Marching One Hundred.’ We had eight sousaphones (including me), which were equal to or more than any other school in the Suburban League. Marching band practice began about the same time as fall football practice; and there was "summer band." Mr. Lutz was the band director and Mr. Fillmore was the assistant. Once, during summer band, Mr Fillmore gave me his shiny new red Ford to run a few errands. Thankfully I returned it in one piece. (editor: No teacher in their right mind would do that today!)

FAMILY FOOTNOTES:

Congratulations to Gary & Jackie Baumgardner who celebrated their 46th Anniversary on March 18th!

Dan Mortimer reports that nothing “earthshaking,” his word, has happened in his life. You be the judge:

The highlight of my life was marrying my high school sweetheart, Brenda Ellis (Revere ’68) in 1970. I’ll save you the math; that’s 47 great years. (If you count the years we dated, we’re already past the Golden 50 year milestone!) Brenda and I have lived in Granger Township since we returned from the Air Force in 1972.

For the past 14 years I’ve been working at Cleveland State University as Manager of Student Computing Services and the IT Users’ Help Desk. I’ve created and managed computer help

desks at BFGoodrich, Centerior (aka CEI), University Hospitals, and GrafTech, and I am the founder and President Emeritus of the Northern Ohio local chapter of the international Help Desk Institute.

Angelo Samperisi shares his family history: I have a married son Damiano 38, who is a Marine stationed in Vancouver, WA; and a married daughter, Adriana, 36, who lives in Garden Grove, CA. We have a motorhome and make good use of it every year. This year we traveled to

Florida to visit my wife's sisters and on the way back the freeway took us by Richfield. Next year we are planning on going to Vermont in October, so we may very well be trekking through Ohio. I play senior softball and I am an avid bowler and complete in the National Senior Games that is held every other year in a different city. I competed in Cleveland when it was held there in 2013. You compete in your State to qualify to get to go to the Nationals. I was the gold medalist for California since 2011 and represented Idaho this year where we competed in Birmingham, Alabama. I plan to compete in Albuquerque in 2019. PHOTO: Tom Vyrostek, Gail Raines, Angelo Samperisi, Carol Gowin Wilson  Linda Houghton Ertel: For the past 34 years she has lived at 1941 Kemery Road, Bath. She shares her home with Ernie, her husband. They have spent 50 years together. She attended the 20th Class of ‘67 reunion and is sorry she missed the 50th. Ernie was Class of ‘65 and she has attended his reunions. She saw Dennis Rigaux in Florida who told her about the 50th but she never got a mailing. (Hope that never happens again). Linda wants us to know Butch is alive and well, and that she is, as well, even after so many years.

Ralph Pim: Thanks to Colleen Pierson, I now know that I am related by marriage to Colleen, Peggy Noland, Janie Crile, Harry Hillegas, and all the McKissons. I knew about some of the connections but not all. My mother died in 1982 and my father married Eleanora (Elly) Davis at Bath Church in December, 1984. My father died in 2000 and Elly passed away in 2011.

REVERE REBUILDING: The Revere Alumni Association in cooperation with Revere Local Schools plans on documenting the high school and Bath buildings through pictures and videos prior to them being torn down. There will also be tours set up for alumni to visit both schools before they are torn down.

Above photos: Revere High entrance circa 1972, and the proposed new entrance.

(Editorial Comment: From a purely personal viewpoint, why wasn’t this done for Richfield Elementary? I don’t accept the asbestos theory as there was no encasement when the building was dismantled. Also, alumni may want to purchase mementoes so I hope that is considered.)

Angelo Samperisi and family will be traveling through NE Ohio in early October. He would like to connect with his classmates. To this end, we have set October 17th as the Fall Revere Class of ‘67 Happy Hour. This makes it possible for Angelo to renew old friendships!

Jim and Sally Christopher have requested the Summer Class of ‘67 Happy Hour be in July at a date they can attend. To that end, we have set Thursday, July 26th, at early afternoon for the Summer Happy Hour. How about we hold it at a park or a classmate’s home and have it catered by a food truck! (the food truck may be out of the question. Swenson’s wants $600 for one hour and the total tab for all food consumed. Don’t worry, the Newsletter Team will find a way to feed us!)

.

The following are classmates that have been contacted at least twice by mail and a few by voicemail, but they have not responded. Maybe you could contact them and give them a nudge to contact me. There are 23 in this group.  William Brazel, Margaret Brown, Nancy Chrisman, Mary Courtock Walker, Jeff Dudo, Beverly Ellis Marchand, Ronald Evans, Barbara Fragale Weinert, Rebecca George Mitchell, Sharon Hartjen Crockett, Jay Hutchison, Robert Klatte, Railey Mace, Kathleen McClelland Barbarich, Dennis McGregor, Regina Mihelcic Macko, Kathleen Oros Dragomer, Cynthia Repp Puinno, Minna Sandmann Garman, Stuart Skorman, Carolen Tipton Thorn, Daniel Wells, Chris Zak  With the following classmates there is very little information. If you have ANY information about these classmates, please send it to Harry Hillegas at [email protected]. There are 14 in this group.  Sandra Beaty, Paul Fister,, James Hale, Sallie Hayes, Raette Kephart, Michael McMenamin, Robert Miles, Gail Raines, Odetta Stalnaker, James Strickler, Bonnie Taylor, Thomas Ward, Wendy White, Susan Ziegler  A word about Dan Britt. I keep getting a discrepancy between my count - 190 identified classmates - and references in the Yearbook to 197 in the class. Dan is in the 1966 Yearbook (French National Honor Society). Does anyone know if Dan began the class with us in September 1966? That would explain one of the seven of whom there is nothing.  Out of a class of 197, there are 37 we have not been able to contact, and 7 that just do not seem to exist. For those into math, 44 divided by 197 gives the ‘unable to contact rate’ at 22.3%.  A short note about Stuart Skorman. If you google him, you will see he is a nationally known entrepreneur who has made several fortunes and has written a book you can buy on Amazon.

The Newsletter Team has reached out to him several times, and he has not responded. We have an email address, snail mail address, and several links to his interviews and projects. If you feel you can successfully reach out to Stuart contact Harry and he will give you the information.

In this photo are some of our classmates we cannot contact: Margaret Brown, Gail Raines, Kathy Oros, Railey Macy, and James Hale

I will only post names that I have confirmed as accurate. They are listed alphabetically by last and/or maiden name. Large print means added since last edition.

Brian Bennett, Nancy Brostedt, Peter Cerney, Larry Conley, John Corey(I did not see an obit but three classmates independently reported this to me), Sally Davidson Brown, John

Gillespie, Mark Herpmann, Jeff Hill, Judith Holderfield Boggs, Linda Hughes,

Christine Merkh, Patty Monegan, Thomas Motz, Alan Scholl, Rory Severns, Becky Snyder, and Kathrenia Webel

One little thing at the end. There is a request to compile a list of classmates that went into education as a career, or for community activism. At this time the list has 11 names but there most likely are a few more. It you teach at any level, have been an administrator, been on a school board, ran the PTA, anything involving students please contact Harry at [email protected]

Finally, each section needs you! PLEASE submit your tidbits, memories, bio suggestions, family information, gatherings, and any help you can give in helping us contact the classmates on whom we have no information. Send your newsletter contributions to ‘[email protected].’

Ray Oviatt: Last time on Revere stage when I retired 2015...last line..."cheerio old chaps" thank you Revere Players..   This newsletter is brought to you by the Newsletter Team of Diane Luther, Ernie Richmann, Harry Hillegas, Nancy Haury Archey, Sue Colombes Morgan
