Choir reunion at Holy Deliverance London Branch Pre-anniversary program Church News Friday, November 28, 1980 Parade Plans Complete For Santa’s Arrival “Final plans are about complete for the biggest and best Christmas Parade in local history,” said Mayor Joe Taylor as he and members of his committee met Monday night. There will be approximately 90-100 units in the parade, including Santa Clause and his wife. To date, there are 18 floats entered, 22 antique cars, 11 Shrine units with 100 vehicles and horses, 6-7 bands, the Saddle Club, the Sunset Riders motorcycle group, 4-5 fire trucks, convertibles with two high school queens and courts, the 1980 Strawberry Queen, Miss Sally Simmons, the Rescue Squad, and equipment, two National Guard units, a group of three wheelers, and Tennessee Trash with 5-10 cars. Hospital Adding Twelve New Private Rooms Haywood Park General Hospital will open twelve new private rooms December 1. The rooms are ultramodern with television, shower, electric beds, separate temperature controls, etc. The hospital will now be licenses for 62 beds. Opening the rooms will be the completion of the first phase of an approximately $1 million expansion which will add over 14,000 square feet to the facility. The second phase will be the opening up of new ancillary departments such as physical therapy, respiratory therapy, pharmacy and a new storeroom. This should be completed sometime in late December. The third phase of the construction will consist of renovation of the dietary and medical records department. This should be complete in January or February. The expansion is being funded entirely by Hospital Corporation of America; the world’s leading hospital management company. Opening Deer Harvest Good Despite rainy, windy weather and fewer hunters the deer harvest on opening weekend was good in West Tennessee. Many TWRA officers reported a two- day harvest, which was about the same or less than last years opening two-day harvest. All counties were hampered by winds and heavy rains hampered some counties. Most officers indicated there were fewer hunters. There were an estimated 103 deer taken in Haywood County during the first two days of the season. Thursday, November 29, 1990 City Planning Board Opens Door for Off- Premise Signs The Brownsville Planning Commission approved a resolution Monday night, which would allow 50 foot tall, 300 square foot signs to be placed in three zoned areas within the Brownsville city limits. The proposed sign ordinance which must now go to the city board for approval, allows signs to advertise off-premise businesses in general commercial, general industrial, and restricted industrial zones. The ordinance allows sign usage as a conditional use, requiring property owners to request the usage from the Zoning Appeals Board. A site plan review must pass planning commission scrutiny. Local Musicians Conduct Food Drive The United in Christ Community Singers and the Reed Music Studies students conducted a successful annual canned food drive for Thanksgiving. The youngsters collected over 1500 cans of food and over 500 other non- perishable goods. Rickey Reed and Audrey Blue organized the effort. The drive benefited 21 homebound patients who received boxes of the non- perishable goods, a turkey, ham and a hen. Prizes donated by Reed Music Studies encouraged students participating in the food drive to collect as much food as possible. Farrows Featured in “Dirt Wheels” Judson and Joseph Farrow have competed in the AMA Grand National Quadcycle Series for the past three years and have each been successful in winning a Grand National Championship title. The brothers have traveled to Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, New York and Massachusetts. This year the GNC finals were held at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch here in Tennessee. Judson captured first place in the motocross division of this even competing in the Pro/Am Four Stroke class and Joseph finished fifth. Judson and Joseph earned second and fourth place honors in the overall Grand National points standings. With over 700 entries, reporters were on hand to cover this round of competition. Dennis Cox of California interviewed Judson and Joseph and they are featured in a four-page article in the December issue of “Dirt Wheels” magazine. Could we have in our society today a crisis of compassion within the everyday individual? The root word for compassion means to have sympathy, to pity, to have compassion. The verb means to suffer with, to commiserate, have compassion for, to have a temper or disposition inclined to show mercy, a heart that is tender and easily moved by the distress and sufferings of others. It seems we may be suffering with hardness of heart in our nation. If a person were to approach you crying, for whatever reason and seeking comfort, would you ignore them, brush them off feeling very uncomfortable, or receive them unto yourself and seek to help in any small way you could? There are two unhealthy ways in which to show compassion. One may be described as acute sympath-etic. This is when one who is currently involved in healing from a loss themselves or their feelings are so close to the surface because they can identify with the same loss as the one whom they came to com- fort. What happens is the one who is supposed to be the receiver of the compassion ends up giving the comfort instead of being the recipient. The other is enabling compassion. An example is a spouse giving their mate who has an addiction to a drug that substance instead of helping them quit the habit. True compassion is showing sympathy or empathy for someone who is suffering and is in need of comfort, consolation, and simple kindness. It does require our willingness to stop if necessary; pause a few moments to give aid to another. It also requires respect for another, if we have not walked a mile in their shoes, we owe the courtesy of treating others they way we would want ourselves to be treated, (Matthew 7:12). This involves abstaining from gossip (Proverbs 11:9; Romans 1:29). This is Sunrise. Compassion?
