In What Ways Does My Media Products Use, Challenge Forms and Conventions

Joe Clark

Page 2: A2

Background: My magazines background colour which is white, red and blue connotes to help gain a happy and funny atmosphere that is conventional to the genre of comedy. Also it helps make the main images and the masthead stand out more which is important to help catch peoples attention.

Mise-en-scene: Also the Mise-en-scene that I used is conventional for the genre. It is funny and also the colour of the clothing helps the magazine stand out. The tie in the photo is to help show that the film will be about someone in a working environment. Then the person at the back of the photo is to help show it is a comedy as he is holding his belly as he laughs.

Shot Types: The shot of Gibby is mid shot to help show the clothes which he is wearing and also show the details of them. The second photo on the magazine cover is a mide\long shot as he is not the main focus of the magazine cover.

Links: To make the magazine link in with the trailer and the poster I used a number of different similarities, such as the font used for the Gibby. Because the background wasn’t based in a scene from the trailer I have had to make a lot more links then maybe needed but I feel that I have done enough to get a good link between the two.

Masthead: Additionally I have made it so the masthead is the same one which I have in the movie trailer, this is to make a distinctive match between the two products so that it gains a recognizable brand image.

Route Of The Eye: The magazine uses the conventional route of the eye image. This allows the audience to quickly scan through very easily. Also the magazine is very easy to look at because of the layout of it, its not to strenuous on the eyes.

Objects: I have also included more conventional objects on the magazine. For example using a barcode and an issue number helps make it more relatable to a real film magazine

Typography: Also I have used a bold typography to help make the font stand out where it has to. Also this allows me to make certain text blend into the page.

Layout: Also at the bottom of the poster to make it more conventional to a real film poster I have gave it billing block which I made myself. It is smaller than the other fonts as I don’t want it to take the attention of the main arts of the poster. But the billing block still provides them with important information such as characters names and the production people involved.

Image Information: When I edited the image on the poster I wanted to make it brighter than the original and also I wanted to use and learn HDR toning to help make the image look better overall. I did this by changing the saturation and contrast of the image and also applying pre-made effects onto different parts of the photo.

Conventional Factors: It is conventional to incorporate captions in the poster which directly link into the film, I used “Its time to grow up” as my caption and I did this in a font which is conventional and related to the other fonts which I have used in my other tasks.

Atmosphere: The atmosphere that I wanted to create within the poster I believe that I have done, I wanted to make it a funny and happy atmosphere that connotes the sort of feel that the film would actually have. Also I wanted to use the same colour scheme as the magazine so once again I could get a good house style to my brand.

Image Information: The image which I used is roughly similar to the one which was used on the magazine. It is conventional to the genre as it is funny and creates an easy atmosphere. This is conventional to the genre.

Image Information: When choosing which image I would use I chose this one because it has a direct link to both of the other product, the film trailer as it is the clothes which he is wearing and the magazine and it is also the clothes he is wearing but also the same sort of stance once again creating a good brand image and feel.

My film trailer is conventional to what a movie trailer should be as it shows small, short clips of the of the movie narrative while no showing and revealing to much. It is key that the trailer that is doesn't’t reveal to much of the movie to the audience but still gives them some of the narrative to get people interested. Also in the trailer it shows key characters and the main scenes of the film, enough to get people interested into going to watch the film but not to much to make them get the story and not need to see the film. Also at the end of the trailer there is end credits which quickly tell you who is in the play, which companies are involved and the director of the play.

Within my trailer I have kept it conventional which short snappy shots, no shot is taking up to much of the trailer time which is conventional.

The music within the trailer is conventional to what it should be for the genre, it is upbeat and has a fun happy tone to it. I had to explore for different music soundtracks because of copyright issues and also they didn't’t sound conventional for the trailer.

The mise-en-scene of the trailer is conventional to the genre which I am trying to advertise to the public, it connotes a funny and happy atmosphere within the trailer which is what I have tried to create among the three task. A lot of the lighting is high key, the start of the trailer is a lower key due to the environment that it was filmed and the mood that is trying to be created.

The similarities between my magazine and empire magazines cover of Shaun Of The Dead are the masthead are both clearly at the top. The cover story positions vary between the two magazines, both still in a conventional position so that the reader can see them but still the main focus should be masthead.

The photo c=varies also, my magazine photo is two of the main characters without any background and the mise-en-scene used in the trailer. The Empire photo is of the main characters and also a conventional background for the film.

The typography of the two magazines are clear and conventional for the genres which they are representing. Also the route of the eye is very good on both of the magazines as mine is based around.

Both of the magazines meet there conventions within the genre which they are meant to be in. The route of eye on both is very good which makes it very good and easy to look at. They both meet there objective of getting peoples attention and getting them to read them, thus advertising the film on the front page. The typography of both magazines is clear and concise, it gives the reader an easy time when it comes to identifying what they need to read.

Comparison

Comparison

Both poster have genre related typography, the fonts are conventional and the size and placement re both conventional. The production credits are both at the bottom of the poster which is conventional for a movie poster.

Both have the actors name at the top of the poster which seems to be the conventionally placement for a movie. Both have a white background which I used to highlight and make the poster image standout.

The mise-en-scene of both of the posters are linked into the film which they are advertising. The shot types are different, my poster has a mid shot which shows good detail of the clothes he is wearing. Where as the Norbit poster is a long shot to show the two people clearly in what they are dong.

The film posters both do there job by showing key points, both showing the key characters in the film, with mine there is only one. The mise-en-scene of the magazine covers both connote a happy and comedy feel to the audience when you look at the poster. They both include slogans related to the key characters decision an what the film may include. This is conventional to a film poster. Both of the poster they both have production credits at the bottom, relaying important information to the public such as actors names and also the production companies involved.
