A170-M and A175-M Axial turbochargers for the largest medium-speed engines in the world Axial turbochargers with high compressor ratios and efficiency for large medium-speed engine platforms on marine and power plant applications. The new single-stage A170-M and A175-M turbochargers target the highest-powered medium-speed engines available, ranging from power outputs of 6,000 kW to 11,500 kW per turbocharger. Performance concept A100-M turbochargers for medium-speed engines are designed specifically to meet market demand for the highest compressor pressure ratios with single-stage turbocharging. The A170-M and A175-M are capable of producing market leading pressure ratios of up to 5.8, which enables significantly increased engine power densities. The A170-M and A175-M ensure high turbocharger perform- ance, effecting a reduction in fuel consumption, thermal loading, and nitrogen oxide emissions. Design concept A100 axial turbochargers are of modular concept with a minimized number of components. A range of specific design and construction features, such as advanced cleaning systems, allow unrestricted heavy fuel oil (HFO), multi fuel, and gas operation for power plant and marine applications. This supports operators across both markets in maximizing uptime and availability. Aluminum compressor wheels are standard The compressor wheel cooling technology developed by ABB allows the continued use of aluminum for compressor wheels even at such very high pressure ratios and without compro- mising the high operational reliability and long component exchange interval that users have come to expect with this material. Qualification program Like all newly developed ABB turbochargers, the A100 went through a mandatory qualification program on ABB’s own combustion rigs to ensure reliable operation in future engine applications. The comprehensive series of tests ranged from thermodynamic checking of the new compressor and turbine stages to mechanical qualification of all newly designed com- ponents. Reducing total cost of ownership The A100 turbocharger supports total cost of ownership due to reduced number of components, unrestricted HFO opera- tion, and optimized fuel consumption. Use of the well-proven cartridge concept also allows for ease of maintenance, repair and overhaul. This is supported by the ABB Turbocharging network of over 100 Service Stations in more than 50 countries.
