Greg Vanstory and David Delk call play-by-play for the Tomcats. The Tomcats squared off with a strong Martin Westview team Friday night and almost pulled out the victory in the closing minutes. Martin Westview was led by a 52 point outing by guard Jacob Lloyd that proved too much for Haywood on this night. The Tomcats fell behind from the first quarter only to make a spirited rally behind Jamarcus Comage and Tyler Boyd in the fourth quarter to pull within a few baskets of upsetting the strong beginning of Martin. When the final buzzer sounded he score was Haywood 84, Martin Westview 92. Leading the Tomcats were Jamarcus Comage with 24 points, Tyler Boyd with 12 points, and Kendall Middlebrooks with 12 points. Haywood boys fall to Martin Westview The Lady Tomcats faced a very experienced Martin Westview team Friday night and walked away with a stunning victory. Martin Westview cruised the first three quarters of the game playing tight defense and scoring at will over the Lady Tomcats. As the fourth quarter started to wind down the Tomcats fought back, and with their own spirited play and stingy defense, they began to claw their way back into the game. The Tomcats frustrated Martin Westview creating turnovers and a few easy baskets to turn the tide as time became Martin’s enemy. The Tomcats sunk a three pointer with 1:20 left to go ahead 42-40 and a traveling violation with 24 seconds left sealed the victory for Haywood. The final score was Haywood 45, Martin Westview 40. Leading scorers for the game were Trinity Jackson with 15 points, Iola Parrish with 10 points, and Chelsey Owens with 9 points. Haywood’s point guard forces a turnover. Lady Tomcats close out Martin Westview The YMCA hosted a basketball fundamental camp for children this year led by Patrick Hines. The children worked on basic fundamentals such as passing, dribbling, teamwork, and proper shooting technique during the five week course. On Saturday, the children got to face off against parents in a game that showcased these techniques, and they easily defeated the grownups with smiles all around. At the outset of the game, parent Tybric Shaw led off with a dunk, as the rims were lowered from the usual 10 feet to seven feet. The Little Dribblers didn’t panic and pushed the ball up the court with teamwork and hustle. A special thanks goes to the parents, Clevette Brown, Tommy Russell, and Kendall Dancy with the junior high basketball program. The YMCA looks forward to more programs for children throughout 2011.
