Expecting her first child next January, Taylor has resigned as the Eagles’ head girls coach. LPR photo O’Donnell’s Taylor (Gass) Feliciano likely won’t forget her first year in the high school coaching ranks Feliciano ended up taking a relatively young Eagle hoop squad to the playoffs where they nearly upset Top 25 Sands. Nearly all of that Eagle ball club will be back next year – except for Feliciano. She recently turned in her resignation as O’Donnell’s head girls hoop coach but she will remain on staff as a seventh grade math teacher. Taylor is married to O’Donnell head boys basket- ball coach Rocky Feliciano. This young couple just recently learned they are expecting the birth of their first child. There is still a good pos- sibility that Taylor also will remain on the Eagles’ coaching staff, but in an as- sistant’s role. “Our baby’s due in Janu- ary, right about the time that we start district. I just don’t think it would be fair to anybody involved, espe- cially our girls, to get started out with the girls and then get out later,” Taylor said. “There’s already going to be enough stress on me be- ing a first-time mother.” O’Donnell Athletic Direc- tor Blake Nichols has mixed emotions about Taylor’s resignation. “Because it’s family, we wholeheartedly support her decision. As sad as it is to see her step back, especially after the kind of year that she had out here last year, we completely understand,” Nichols said. As hard as that decision was on Taylor, it helps knowing that they will continue to make O’Donnell their home. After growing up in nearby Borden County, Taylor already was accus- tomed to life in this area but husband Rocky grew up in the El Paso area. The couple met at Sul Ross University in Alpine where they both played basketball for the Loboes. “We love it out here. It’s just a great place to be,” Taylor said of O’Donnell. “These kids have just been great to both of us. We’ve also got a great administra- tion out here to work for.” Being a coach’s wife, bas- ketball still will be a big part of Taylor’s life but the Feli- cianos believe this move will help in the months ahead. “At the end of the day, you’re always going to have stress, but Rocky and I agree we just want to do whatever we can to help in this time of our life,” Taylor said. Taylor said she could not have asked for a better first season as a head coach than the past one. “Like anytime you do something different, a lot of prayer went into this past season because, just like anything else, we always know it’s God’s will,” she said. “Again, it’s the kids. We were just very blessed to have the bunch we did, espe- cially how much hard work they were willing to put in,” Taylor said. One of the highlights for Taylor and her team was their gutsy playoff perfor- mance against the Sands Mustangs, who went into the game highly favored but escaped by a close margin. Sands’ girls finished the season as a Top 25 ball club. Hoop coach stepping down after good first year at OHS A local couple’s grand- daughter has proven that a strong freshman collegiate golf season was not any kind of fluke. Christina Pevey, the granddaughter of Lamesa’s Herrel and Wanda Hall- mark, made All-Landmark Conference first-team hon- ors for the second straight season. After shooting an 84 on the final round, Christina finished fifth in that confer- ence’s golf championships to become a repeat honoree in her first two years of col- lege golf. In her second year at Goucher College, located at Baltimore Md., Pevey fin- ished with six top-10 finishes and three top-five finishes. Christina Pevey She won the Gettysburg Tri- Match in the fall season. Last spring, Pevey tied for the tournament low score at the Goucher Spring Invitational. Pevey recently was selected to the Goucher College Athletic Depart- ment’s All-Goucher Second Team. It was Pevey’s second straight All-Goucher second team recognition and she was only one of two athletes to return to that elite squad from the 2017-2018 season. The All-Goucher Team is the 10 most distinguished student athletes as well as the most outstanding coach during an academic year as selected by a committee. Christina’s dad, William Pevey, coaches at Post High School where he assists with the Bold Gold’s football program. William is also the golf coach at Post where Christina’s younger brother, Landon, is now teeing off for the Antelopes.
