Lend Lease ProgramOn March 11th, 1941, the US military was
granted the ability to aid foreign
nations during the war.
The allowed the president to transfer
arms or any other defense materiel for which the COngress allocated money to ‘the government of any country whose defense was vital to
the United States national security.
Lend Lease Program
The lend lease act enabled the US to aid Great Britain.
Lend Lease Program
One of the biggest threats to the US Lend-Lease was the German U-Boats. They were subs that would use torpedoes to sink ships believed to be carrying
weapons and supplies to Great Britain.
Lend Lease Program
In response to the German U-Boats, the Americans Produced Liberty Ships, which were cargo
ships designed to specially transport US goods to Great
Britain. This was all to support GB’s war efforts against the NAzis.
FDR’s role in WWII
In the beginning of the War, the United states
remained neutral.
Until...
FDR’s role in WWII
The 32nd president of the United States, FRANKLIN ‘FRED’ ROOSEVELT declared the
US into World War Two.
Attack On Pearl HarborOn December 7, 1941,
Japan attacked the U.S.’ naval base in
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Attack On Pearl HarborZoinks! How
much damage did they cause
Velma?
The Japanese destroyed 20
naval vessels and 200 American
planes.
Over 2000 American sailors and soldiers were
killed, and another 1000 were injured.
Attack On Pearl Harbor
“A date which will live
in infamy!”
“We must be the great
arsenal of democracy!”
The following day, Franklin D. Roosevelt
gave his famous speech about the attack.
“No man can tame a tiger into a kitten by stroking it.
There can be no appeasement with
ruthlessness!”
Japanese American Internment
They are helping plot another attack!
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, many Americans speculated and feared that the Japanese American immigrants were somehow helping the Japanese plan another attack on the U.S.
Japanese American Internment
Because of this fear, Americans created internment camps. These were much like concentration camps, but they were labor camps. The immigrants were forced to abandon their life and come work at these camps, just because of the fear of the Japanese attacking again.
Japanese American Internment
That violates basic human rights!
And I know what you’re thinking Scooby, The Japanese American Citizens League tried to argue that these steps were unjustifiable, but the camps remained for two and a half years.
Battle of MidwayOn June 3-6, 1942, the U.S Navy defeated an Imperial Japanese Naval fleet. This defeat proved to be irreparable. This was an important defeat in the course of the war.
Battle of Midway
This battle was a major turning part for the war on the Pacific. Before this, the Japanese had completely controlled
the Pacific, but once the U.S naval fleet defeated them, all of that changed!
D-DayOn June 6, 1944, over 160,000 allied troops landed along the French coastline to take down Nazi Germany. More than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded, but their sacrifice allowed other troops to make it to Hitler’s army.
D-Day
General “Daphne” Eisenhower
“We will accept
nothing less than full
victory!”
General Dwight Eisenhower gave the go ahead for the attack.
Fall of Berlin (Battle)
The Battle that marked the end of WWII was fought
between April and May 1945.
Fall of Berlin (Battle)
The Red Army outnumbered the Germans
in terms of men and equipment.
The amount of equipment deployed for
the Berlin operation was so huge I simply
cannot describe it and I was there.........
Alex “Shaggy” Popov, 5th Shock Army 1945
Fall of Berlin (Battle)
On April 30th, Hitler commits suicide in order to escape the disgrace of
deposition and capitulation.
ZOINKS! What did
Hitler do? Did he
surrender?
Fall of Berlin (Battle)The city could not last out for long and on May 2nd 1945, Berlin surrendered to the Russians and the war in Europe all but ended. Germany unconditionally surrendered on May 7th.
Role of Women at Home
In 1942, women at home were to be a housewife, taking care of children and house duties.
Role of Women at HomeBy 1945, some women joined the new female branches of the military, many of those
who stayed at home went to work in factories and filled
other traditionally male jobs while their husbands, fathers,
boyfriends, brothers, and sons left to fight.
The HolocaustJews are Communist
and they will betray us during the war. I believe that they would impure
the German race.
Let’s get rid of the them!
Adolf “Scrappy Doo” Hitler
The HolocaustBetween 1933 and 1945, the Germans slaughtered Jews and other victims in mass shootings. Six millions were murdered.
ZOINKS!
The Holocaust
When the Allied forces finally invaded Germany in 1945, Adolf Hitler knew he had been defeated. Hundreds were caught and punished for their involvement in the Holocaust.
Atomic BombIn revenge of the attack on Pearl Harbor, a US B-29 bomber dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Atomic BombWhat’s positive about it? Well Scooby, it made the
Japanese surrender for the sake of the other cities and people, which ended the war.
Atomic Bomb
Then what’s negative about
it?
Hmm.. It killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Japanese people. It was unfair to the family and relatives of the victims because the military-run government started and fought the war, not the citizens. It was not a democracy.
