Fort Lauderdale Police Report for the month of

June 2016:

In Edgewood we had two burglaries:

one business and one residential.

There were four auto burglaries. A few of these were at

the local gas stations.

Most victims were women, leaving their purses inside

of unlocked vehicle's at the gas pumps.

Officer Rodriguez wants to stress to residents that if you

see something that looks suspicious, please contact the

police, giving a description of the individual and the

situation.

The police non-emergency number is

Telephone Scams – Part 1

Telephone scams are still very much a common occurrence. According to several reports, people over 50 are dispro-

portionately victimized by telephone fraud. Here are a few of the more common scams, for which to beware!

Fake Charities – You receive a cold call from a charity looking for a donation. No matter what they claim as to why

you should donate on the phone, hang up and call the official line for the charity or for the local organization they

claim will get credit, if you donate right then on the phone.

Fake IRS Calls – The IRS will NEVER call you on the phone, send an email or text to you, and threaten you with

actions because of overdue taxes, penalties, or ANYTHING ELSE! Just hang up!!! If you want to confirm there is

no problem, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. Just be prepared to be on hold for a while.

Fake Tech Support Calls – Microsoft, Apple, and all the other major software and hardware vendors will NEVER call

you “out of the blue” and tell you that they have received errors from your computer that they need to address. They

may show you some errors on your computer but these are normal occurrences. There’s no way they could have de-

tected them remotely. Again, just hang up! NEVER give them access to your computer and NEVER give them any

of your passwords. If you’re still worried, call a reputable computer service company or knowledgeable person you

know, to check things out!

Grandparent Help Calls – You receive a call from someone telling you that your grandchild is in some kind of trou-

ble. Sometimes they even claim to BE your grandchild, but on a bad phone line. You’re asked to send money to get

them out of trouble but they ask not to say anything to their parents so they don’t get in trouble. DO NOT SEND

ANY MONEY! Call their parents or an authority that is related to whatever the alleged trouble may be, and don’t get

the phone number from the caller – look it up.

Raccoon Safety

Raccoons are a common sight in many areas, but this doesn't mean that

they are safe or friendly to humans. In fact, raccoons can be quite danger-

ous if they get too close. Following are some tips from the Washington

Department of Fish and Wildlife on safety around raccoons:

Keeping Raccoons from Coming Too Close

If a raccoon approaches too closely, make yourself appear larger:

stand up, shout, and wave your arms. If he continues to approach,

throw or spray water, or even stones if needed.

A raccoon that is very aggressive – or too tame, or seems to be diso-

riented or staggers may be sick or injured. Do not approach the animal

yourself, instead contact your local wildlife department or a wildlife

management professional.

In areas where raccoons are regularly seen, children should be

warned against approaching them and told to yell, if a raccoon ap-

proaches too close, so that adults know they need assistance.

If a raccoon gets in your house, the Wildlife Department advises,

"Stay calm, close surrounding interior doors, leave the room, and let

the animal find its way back out through the open door, window, or

pet door. If necessary, gently use a broom to corral the raccoon out-

side." However, you should never corner a raccoon, as that will force

it to defend itself.

Preventing Conflicts Between People and Raccoons

Don’t feed raccoons. When people feed raccoons, the animals can

lose their fear of people and approach them seeking food. If they are

then not fed, they may become aggressive, even biting or scratching.

Feeding the raccoons can also bring more into an area than would oth-

erwise be there, causing a spread of parasites and disease.

Keep garbage out of reach of raccoons. Raccoons will find ways to

get to garbage for food. If your garbage can does not have a locking/

clamping lid, secure it with rope, chain, cords, or weights. Also, secure

the can to prevent raccoons from tipping it over, by driving metal or

wooden stakes through the garbage can handles and into the ground.

On trash pick-up day, wait until morning to put the can out, as rac-

coons are nocturnal, so are most active at night.

Do not leave pet food outdoors. It is best to feed dogs and cats in-

doors.

Keep pets indoors. Whenever possible, keep pets indoors at night. If

this is not possible, ensure that they are in a secure area that raccoons

cannot penetrate. Raccoon bites can cause disease.

Keep pet doors secure from raccoons

Clean up after barbecues. Always clean barbecue grills, grease traps

and barbecue area immediately after cooking out, so that remaining

food scraps do not attract raccoons.

Eliminate access to harborage. Raccoons will climb into chimneys

and enter attics, crawlspaces, and areas beneath houses, porches, and

sheds to harbor and nest or den. To close off possible entry areas,

cover them with ¼-inch mesh hardware cloth, or with boards or metal.

Keep raccoons out of the house. To keep raccoons from getting onto

your roof to enter your home, keep all tree branches and bushes

trimmed away from your home.

Regular Auto Maintenance (for us novices)

Regular vehicle checkups can reveal hidden problems before they become serious. Here are some things that re-

quire routine maintenance that you shouldn’t ignore.

Taking your car in for regular checkups is akin to getting your annual physical at the doctor—it helps spot potential

issues before they’re problematic—and costly. Here are some things to watch for.

Air filters

You may be familiar with what happens when a home’s furnace filter is dirty and how the restricted air flow affects

the furnace’s ability to properly heat the entire house. Your car’s engine faces a similar struggle when it has a dirty

air filter. You might not think to check the filter when your car seems to be running fine, but a clogged air filter can

affect your gas mileage and acceleration.

Fluids

You may know how to check your oil, but what about your vehicle’s other fluids? In addition to verifying they’re at

the proper levels, make sure the color and clarity are appropriate for each specific fluid. For example, engine cool-

ant is typically green, but it fades as it loses potency, which could lead to an overheated engine. It’s best to have

your fluids checked regularly by an experienced technician.

Battery

A typical car battery lasts three to five years, but there are drains on the battery even when the engine is off, espe-

cially from alarm and aftermarket stereo systems. Corrosion on a battery’s terminals signals a problem, but even if

the battery looks OK and seems to be running well, it could be nearing the end of its life. Have it tested whenever

you take your vehicle in for service.

Brake pads

Knowing when to replace brake pads is easy, right? When you hear them squeal, take your vehicle to the shop.

Well, it’s not that simple. Although brake pads are designed to squeal when they need to be replaced, brake-pad

problems (such as uneven wear) can occur even when the brakes are silent and seem to work well. A certified auto

technician has both the experience and the tools needed to check them properly.

Belts and hoses

It’s a good idea to periodically open your vehicle’s hood when the engine is cold and inspect its belts and hoses.

This simple inspection can bring to light potentially serious problems, but an experienced auto technician can iden-

tify problems you might miss, such as a slipping serpentine belt that can damage the engine accessories it powers.

When in doubt, consult your owners manual for information specific to your vehicle.

TSA PreCheck

Want to move more quickly through the security lines at the airport? TSA PreCheck is the way to do it.

Once you’re registered, there’s no need to remove your shoes, liquids, belts, jackets, and laptop comput-

ers. You are routed through a different line, which is almost always much shorter than the others, as well. If you

travel a moderate amount, it’s something nice to have. You can apply online at

https://www.tsa.gov/precheck . Just fill out the questionnaire and, at the end, schedule a 10-minute interview at the

TSA office. Luckily for all us “Edgewooders”, the office is very close by – almost right on North Perimeter Road

across the street from Snyder Park to the south. It’s at Safe Sky Inc., 650 SW 34th Street, Suite 309, Fort Lauder-

dale. The hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. At the interview, you will get finger-

printed and you pay the $85 fee that is good for FIVE YEARS!!!! Don’t forget to bring your driver’s license and

one other form of identification (official birth certificate, current passport, etc.). The full list of acceptable docu-

ments may be found on their website. I just signed up for it and received my acceptance within one week. You are

provided with a Known Traveler Number (KTN), which you may use when making reservations and buying tickets.

You may also add your KTN to any existing tickets you have purchased by contacting your airline or doing it

online. More information is available at the abovementioned website.
