The history of the watermill

The use of a water mill, predates the use of the windmill.

Its development has occurred in parallel with the end of slavery from the ninth century. The water mill, was replaced by the advent of the steam engine and the electric

Typically , the water is diverted from a river or from a reservoir and conducted to the hydraulic turbine through a channel . The strength of the movement of water , determines the rotation axis that drives the mill 's other machinery. The water , leaving the wheel is drained through a channel queue. The flow of water is controlled by sluice gates that allow maintenance and a minimum measure of flood control.

The water mills can be divided into three types , one with a horizontal hydraulic wheel , about a vertical axis , and the other with a vertical wheel on a horizontal axis . The oldest are horizontal mills in which the force of the water , it was the turn of the stone mill , which was connected directly to the axis of rotation through a gear.

The problem with this type of mill arises from the inability to adjust the speed of rotation.

In most cases, the water wheel is placed vertically , with the horizontal axis of rotation :

• In a mill flush water is the current of the water course which, passing under the wheel , causes its rotation.

• The water can also pass under the wheel , by transmitting part of its kinetic energy .

Since the industrial revolution , and throughout the twentieth century , some mills used a horizontal wheel with vertical axis , known as " turbine " , particularly in the case of the mills , which were smaller in size . The water level was maintained at a level high enough above the mill by a small dam.

The Tenna was born in the town of Montefortino, and runs through the southern Marche and more specifically the Val Tenna. Finally it flows into the Adriatic Sea between the hamlet of Porto Sant 'Elpidio Faleriense Marina and Lido di Fermo, after a journey of 70 km. The river marks the border between the province of Macerata and the Province of Fermo.

The Mill in Ponzano (Fermo) Italy

coming out in me that passion and that awareness, so when he passed away , I was perhaps the last true miller in the area, continuing the activity of family for nearly a hundred years.

This mill was used by, the inhabitants of the countries SantElpidio at sea , Monte Urano , Torre San Patrizio and inhabitants of Fermo. The mill was always a bustle of people and

animals , was the place where people met and since you often had to wait hours , we talked about everything and everyone , so the miller , very important figure in the society of ' era.

Currently, the ' small business relies mainly on small and very small quantities of maize porridge and small farmers harvest the orchard, but also of small amounts of soft wheat for

bread, more and more people have started to do in the house . Another activity that I do very willingly , you accept the many school groups and other visitors in general , illustrating

their mill and telling his story .

• Hydropower is a technology-free emissions, beneficial to the waterways that avoids flooding;

• costs decrease.

Cons

• On the contrary large hydroelectric plants have a serious environmental impact, this has negative effects on the fauna and flora existing in the area in which you will install a hydroelectric plant;

• The consequences of the presence of a hydroelectric plant: -strong visual impacts due to the presence of large dams; - changes of speed natural water which have as a consequence of the spare times longer.
