Members liaise on behalf of the community with federal, state and local governments and agencies. The registered charity’s main fundraiser is the annual Murrumbateman Field Days, held each October since 1979. Profits from the Field Days go to community groups to improve local facilities. The association also runs the annual Australian Cool Climate Wine Show to highlight local pro- duce. Scouts The 1st Murrumbateman Scout Group comprises about 50 members aged between six and 18 years who meet each week in their various age sections (Joey, Cub, Scout or Venturer). They learn useful life skills, serv- ice to others, community minded- ness, and leadership and responsibil- ity, all while having fun. The program is delivered through a range of regular outdoor adventur- ous activities such as camps, canoe- ing/kayaking, abseiling, hiking and navigation, survival skills, first aid training, bushcraft and knots, and other activities. Members are encouraged to vol- unteer within the community at events like Clean Up Australia Day, the local ANZAC Day service and the Field Days. Menshed The men of Murrumbateman cer- tainly have been busy, upgrading and now utilising their space at the Rec Grounds. This year the group hosted Australia’s ‘first bloke’ Tim Mathieson, who took a ride on the shed’s rocking horse, but also spoke about the importance of mental health. Members of the shed are always busy creating and restoring projects, like Jack Price’s now famous wood- en horse. The shed has hosted CPR courses, held barbecues and held day trips. The shed isn’t solely for the blokes, who will happily enjoy a Tim Tam with their cuppa, when donated by some of the visiting women. Lion’s Club The service club has proven that you don’t need a big population to be a roaring success. The club was worked on various projects throughout the years, including tree planting throughout the village; organising Australia Day breakfasts and the annual ANZAC Day services at Jones Park; and beautifying and mowing the local cemetery. The small but tireless group was rewarded for its efforts with an Australia Day, community achieve- ment award. Village sport Tennis Kim Williams is the man to see about tennis in Murrumbateman. If he is not snowed under with Field Days issues he is often seen having a hit at the revamped courts at the Rec Grounds. New members are wel- come and the courts are also avail- able for casual hire. Pony Club The Murrumbateman Pony Club aims to encourage young people to ride, learn and enjoy all aspects of sport connected with horses and rid- ing. It also includes riding training, horsemanship and horse handling. It was formed by as group of local parents in 1980 who wanted to provide their children with an outlet for their interest in horses. Adult riding club Since the completion of a 70x30 metre sand arena in Murrumbateman, the Murrumbateman Adult Riding Club has gone from strength to strength. The ground gets a lot of use and is available for hire. The club also conducts a number of training days during the year. The programs vary and sessions include general flatwork, dressage, hacking, groundwork, poles, jumping, cross country and occasional alternatives like mounted games or an un-mount- ed information session. Cricket In the past the Murrumbateman Maulers have been a strong outfit. In the 2010/2011 side they had both a Triggs Shield and a Sweeney Cup team competing in Yass.
