The Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary
(The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 15,
is not a Holy day of Obligation this year.)

"From now on, will all ages call me blessed.
"
Luke 1:4849

The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin
Mary on August 15 commemorates Mary's bodily assump-
tion into Heaven at the conclusion of her earthly life a
foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time.
“It was fitting that she, who had kept her virginity in child-
birth, should keep her own body free from all corruption
even after death," wrote St John Damascene in the 78th
century.

"It was fitting that God’s Mother should possess what be-
longs to her Son, and that she should be honored by every
creature as the Mother and the Handmaid of God.”

Our Lady's assumption into Heaven has been celebrated
universally throughout the Catholic Church since the 6th
century.

The Church's teaching on the Assumption was formally
defined by Pope Pius XII on 1 November, 1950, when he
exercised papal infallibility to declare: "The Immaculate
Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the
course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into
heavenly glory."

So now you know! Have a great feast day! Our Lady, as-
sumed into Heaven, pray for us.

You won’t find another Parish Activity like this one. It’s
called “WELCOME WEEKEND,” and it’s a great oppor-

When I attended this weekend, I found many moments of
grace and prayer. Also, I met many ladies who have be-

Prayer for the Helpless Unborn

Gracious God, we beg you, in your infinite love to
protect those helpless unborn little ones whose lives
are threatened by abortion. Touch with overflowing
compassion the hearts of pregnant women who are
desperate, fearful, hopeless, anxious, or who feel
they are incapable of carrying this child who now
lives within them. Help these young mothers
understand that this baby is made in Your image and
likeness as well as their own and that You have
given this child a soul and desire its life and health.
Move young mothers beyond fear and selfishness.
Place within their hearts the strength and courage
only You can offer. Grant them great love to bring
this child to birth and to provide all the needed care
that only a mother can impart. Amen.

A Catholic Parent’s Prayer
O Gracious God, O Divine Parent,

You know better than anyone how much I want to do right
by my kids. I can only do this with your help, by the power
of your Spirit working in me:

Help me to put faith at the center of our family

To make prayer, Sunday worship, Christian service and
growing in our faith regular, normal, nonnegotiable
parts of our family life,
To confidently live, model and talk about faith at home,
To be meaningfully involved at church,
To seek and seize opportunities to learn about and
deepen my own faith and love, and
To give and get support with other parents.

I pray for courage, stamina and resilience over the long
haul:

To be a strong leader in the “domestic Church” that is
our family,
To stand up for what’s most important and put it at the
center of our family’s life, and to let go of what’s not,
To make the tough decisions that need to be made
about my kids’ activities and priorities, so as
To lead them into lives of deep faith, hope and love in
this world, and eternal life in the next.

I dedicate myself today to this, your call to me as a parent,
in the name of Jesus.

Amen.
Scripture Verse
But when he saw how strong the wind was he became
frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord,
save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and
caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why
did you doubt?” Mt 14:3031

Altar Flowers
Sometimes people choose to remember a loved one who
is deceased or to honor a special occasion by donating
flowers for the altar. We order from our regular florist so
that the arrangements are a standard size and match the
décor of the season. The cost is $40. Currently Septem-
ber 5/6, 12/13, 19/20 and 26/27 weekends are open for
Altar Flowers.

If you would like to remember your loved ones in this spe-
cial way and help make our church beautiful, please call

Gospel Meditation
Encourage Deeper Understanding of Scripture
Be still and know that I am God. Silence is sacred. Silence
speaks the language of the soul and is the foundation of
all life and eternity itself. Silence takes us beyond the lim-
its of our minds and allows us to seek and to love the es-
sence of all love, perfect love, and being. In silence, we
can be nonverbally present to things and to God in ways
that words cannot accomplish. We can discover, encoun-
ter, and be present to truths that our minds struggle to
conceive and then set aside the boxes we put around
things when comprehending them is challenging. We can
know the unknowable and touch eternity when we encoun-
ter the core silence in our souls.

We can do this even on a noisy street and in the midst of
the greatest distraction. Once we have made friends with
silence, the rambling noise of the world no longer seems
to matter, and we can carry a deep forgiving peace within
us, even when physical silence cannot be found. We know
that we are loved, cared for, sustained, nourished, em-
braced, and carried. There is nothing to fear in silence,
and I can be present to myself in the same way that God
is present to me. I can see myself as God sees me. All of
my faults, weaknesses, imperfections, failings, and sinful-
ness melt away in the abundance of God’s mercy. All of
the worldly things we see as being important no longer
are.

It is in silence that all of the barriers that divide us disap-
pear. There is no more “yours” and “mine” but only the
oneness of “ours.” There is no longer a need to “figure
things out,” and we tap into our desire to simply let things
be. Silence is creative and powerful and gives us hope.
Silence is God’s greatest blessing. God became one with
humanity in silence. It allows us to be one with all of crea-
tion, with the moon and the stars and all of the creatures
God has made. The smallest particle of creation radiates
with beauty. Silence allows us to soar beyond ourselves
and connect in ways that the mind can only imagine.
When all is quiet, we begin to see that it is only our fear
that keeps us from the Lord. It is our fear that causes us to
sink and to fail. We can hear the gentle whisper that tells
us to reach for God’s hand. We discover that we yearn for
the salvation and wholeness that only God can give to us.
Be still my soul and be at peace.
