WHY ?

• CONTAINER DEPOSIT PRINCIPLE IS NOT WORKING(people are not motivated)• PUNISHMENT SYSTEM FOR LITTERING IS NOT

WORKING(people are not concerned about responsibility)

• LOCAL AUTHORITIES STATE THAT THEY HAVE NO BUDGET FOR CLEANUP OR NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE TERRITORY

WHAT WE CAN DO ?

St. Petersburg Regional NGO “MUSORA BOLSHE NET” (“NO MORE GARBAGE”) raised from a private initiative in 2004.

The mission of the organization is to change the attitude towards the littering problem and waste management at all levels from ordinary people to government officials leading up to adoption of laws affecting the waste management in Russia and changes in people’s behavior.

HOW WE CAN DO IT?

The organization now has a network of initiative groups with about 50 actively involved coordinators in more than 30 cities of Russia and also in some CIS countries.

The main activities of the organization include volunteer cleanups of illegal waste littering, taking part in various educational programs introducing garbage sorting and recycling, promoting the “container deposit” principle for recyclable bottles and cans at festivals and major city events.

ABOUT 50 % IS RECYCABLE EVEN RIGHT NOW

Structure of the garbage near the lakes in Leningradskaya Oblast:• Mixed glass (recyclable) - 25-30 %• Plastic bottles (recyclable) – 20-25 %• Aluminum cans (recyclable) - 6-7 %• Various metal (recyclable) – 1-2 %• Other various garbage (non recyclable) – 40 – 60 %It may vary from one place to another but as an average figure we

consider up to 50% of the garbage as recyclable even in present conditions.

• Approximate cost of recyclable garbage:• Mixed glass -0.038 EUR per KG оr 0.013 EUR per 1 glass bottle• Plastic bottles – 0.10 EUR per KG оr 0.005 EUR per 1 plastic bottle• Aluminum cans – 0.75 EUR per KG оr 0.00075 EUR per 1 AL can

WE SHOW REAL EXAMPLES HOW IT MAY WORK

SORTING SAVES MONEY ! The contents of a truck like this (50 cubic meters

capacity) full of mixed sorted recyclable garbage will cost just about 300.00 EUR that will only cover the transport costs. Yet, the costs of the cleanups when sorting of garbage was used are obviously much lower than doing the same cleanup commercially. ( in such case all the garbage will just move to so called “legal” storage and the local authorities will need to pay approx 10.00 EUR per 1 cubic meter transport costs).

One of the major projects so far took place in September 2010 when over 70 cleanups of illegal waste littering in one day in Leningradskaya Oblast were organized. About 1600 people were involved and over 50 tons of illegal waste were sorted and cleaned. Currently we are working to organize up to 500 clean ups in Russia and CIS countries on the 15th of May 2011.
