Pillnitz Castle and Park The Dresden Zwinger
Grosssedlitz Baroque Garden
PILLNITZ CASTLE AND PARK Augustus the Strong
once acquired Pillnitz Castle for his mistress Countess Cosel.
When she later fell out of his favour, Augustus had the hillside and
waterside palaces built after plans by Poeppelmann. On the castle
and park estate, one can find, apart from the Museum for Crafts
and Arts, the Castle Museum and the Palm-tree Greenhouse, the
250-year-old Japanese camellia. GROSSSEDLITZ BAROQUE
GARDEN Augustus the Strong planned a Saxon Versailles
in Grosssedlitz. Those 12 ha make Grosssedlitz the most significant
piece of garden art of 18th-century Saxony, and not only for its
largest collection of bitter orange trees in German-speaking lands.
THE DRESDEN ZWINGER In 1709, Poeppelmann
was assigned by Augustus the Strong with building an orangery in
the Dresden Zwinger garden. Later on, the idea emerged to use
the estate also for festivities.

MORITZBURG CASTLE The present-day
layout of the estate in its magnificent symmetry of Baroque
splendour goes back to Augustus the Strong and his senior master
builder Poeppelmann. The castle displays Europe’s largest collection
of hunting trophies, for example, and the unique Feather Room.

Boettger invented the European hard-paste porcelain in January
1708. In the Dresden Fortress, one can still explore the canon
yards and Dresden’s oldest preserved town gate. MEISSEN
ALBRECHTSBURG CASTLE Soon thereafter, in 1710,
Augustus the Strong relocated the manufactory to Albrechtsburg
Castle in Meissen. The time of the first porcelain manufactory in
Europe is revived in the new permanent exhibition: Those who
keep their eyes open can follow thrilling stories of the history of
porcelain-making. What is also of great interest is the digital labo-
ratory: Try your hand in making porcelain! THE DRESDEN
ZWINGER The full splendour of the white gold can
be admired in the Porcelain Collections of the Dresden State Art
Collections in the Zwinger. The collection was founded by Augu-
stus the Strong in 1715 and currently includes about 20,000 pie-
ces of porcelain art. Not only life-size animals of porcelain from
the Meissen production are on display, but also finest traditional
East-Asian porcelain.

Porcelain – White Gold
DRESDEN FORTRESS Boettger drew the attention
to himself with a true piece of make-believe: He pretended to be
able to make gold. The casemates in the Dresden Fortress were
found a place fit for that purpose. Assisted by von Tschirnhaus,

How an apothecary changed the world: It is astory written by people driven by curiosity, thirstfor knowledge and the taste for beautiful things. Its contributing characters were Elector Augustusthe Strong, the apothecary Johann FriedrichBoettger and the scholar Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus. From then on, the Elector suffered from a hardly insatiableillness – the »maladie de porcelaine«, the porcelain disease.

lade from a limited edition is a most favoured souvenir. THE
ROYAL GROUNDS OF BAD ELSTER The Saxon
royalty and upper society once regularly took their summer resi-
dence at the Royal Saxon State Spa of Bad Elster, a gorgeous gem
of Saxon history. The historical spa park designed around 1850 in
the style of an English landscape garden counts among Germany’s
most beautiful parks. PILLNITZ CASTLE AND PARK
After the long wintertime, spring fever is aroused from
February to April by the blossom of the 250-year-old camellia.

What is especially attractive to see are the Pleasure Garden, the
Lilac Yard and the Palm-tree Greenhouse. LICHTENWAL-
DE CASTLE AND PARK In 2005, the park was chosen
to be one of Germany’s most beautiful parks. In an area of 13 ha
can be seen splendid trick fountains, and charming views open up
into the Zschopau river valley. COUNT PUECKLER PARK
BAD MUSKAU Let yourself be impressed by Count
Pueckler-Muskau’s »Nature Painting«. In the 840-ha park that has
been listed as German-Polish World Heritage since 2004, one can see,
for example, the dwarf horse chestnut and the bald cypress.
ALTZELLA MONASTERY PARK What used
to be a Cistercian abbey was redesigned in 1798 into an estate of
English landscape style. The burial place of the Wettin dynasty
can be found there. The park is especially attractive in spring when
liverwort, cowslip and thimbleweed blossom.

temberg-Teck and his wife, Ursula Katharina, Imperial Princess
von Teschen, had a real little gem created by building Neschwitz
Castle and Park. The summer residence built in the first half of the
18th century is framed by four pavilions. From there, one can
enjoy magnificent sights into the garden designed in French style,
and the adjoining English garden opens up views into the distance.
ORTENBURG CASTLE BAUTZEN Bautzen is
characterised by rich and varied architecture. Ortenburg Castle
rests high above the Spree river on a granite rock that elevates the
town with its towers to make it a landmark to be seen from afar.
Ortenburg Castle is home to the Sorbian Museum which provides
an insight into the life and customs of the Sorbs, their origin and
language. KROBNITZ CASTLE At the end of the
19th century, Lower Silesia was still under rule by Berlin. So it
takes no wonder that the Prussian Minister of War and Field
Marshal General, Count von Roon, made this area his home. He
had the Baroque manor converted in neo-Classicist style, had the
adjacent park extended and a family tomb built. COUNT
PUECKLER PARK BAD MUSKAU Count Pueckler-
Muskau had been inspired by English landscapists and created a
complex piece of garden art on 830 hectares, which harmoniously
combines the seemingly infinite landscape with its optical centre
of the New Castle. On the estate of the Muskau Park that has been
listed as a site of German-Polish UNESCO World Heritage since
2004, one can experience nature as if casually arranged in harmony.

The Beauties of Upper Lusatia
RAMMENAU BAROQUE CASTLE To the
far west of Upper Lusatia, there is a masterpiece of Saxon country
Baroque. The visitor can find diversity and aesthetic wealth not
only in the late-Baroque and early-Classicist rooms, but also in the
culinary respect. The chef and chambermaids serve extraordinary
dishes in the historical dining parlours, cleverly combining
original Lusatian delicacies with Mediterranean cuisine.

COLDITZ CASTLE EUROPEAN YOUTH HOSTEL
The fortress situated on the Zwickauer Mulde river counts
among the oldest castles in Saxony. Today, one wing of the castle
accommodates the Colditz Castle European Youth Hostel which
fills the building with international flair and cheerfulness, which is
certainly the reason why the modern youth hostel is a popular pla-
ce to stay among guests from all over the world. DRESDEN
PILLNITZ CASTLE HOTEL This hotel is idyllically
located on the grounds of the Baroque Pillnitz pleasure castle on
the Elbe river bank. The small and superb boarding house has gai-
ned its reputation mainly among Dresden visitors who, after
having experienced a performance at the Semper Opera House or
having strolled around the Frauenkirche quarters, do not want to
miss the spell of Baroque lifestyle.
