DID YOU KNOW?

In 2016, five women in Lake County, Illinois, lost their lives in domestic violence-related homicides, a rate as high as the worst neighborhood in Chicago.

Together, we can do more to save lives and stop the cycle of violence.

• Evolved the annual golf outing by moving to an upgraded golf course that attracted new donors and provided a first-class experience designed to retain golfers year over year.

• Collaborated with the State’s Attorney’s office to develop a human trafficking task force for Lake County.

• Invested in development to build the agency’s overall fundraising capacity and lessen our reliance on government funds.

• Remodeled a training room at our Zion campus, where clients can meet on a monthly basis, and where community volunteers can receive their 40-hour domestic violence training.

• Expanded services in the southern part of the county to meet the needs of victims in communities where our physical presence is limited, like Lake Forest, Lake Zurich, Gurnee and Highland Park.

• Strengthened our IT infrastructure in ways that increase staff productivity and increase safety of our clients’ records.

• Piloted “Giving Tuesday” to engage donors in new ways.

• Created a teen room in Zion, providing a safe space for teens to meet, do homework and hang out.

• Secure funding and remodel emergency shelter in stages, providing a living environment for survivors and children that is warm, welcoming, nurturing, beautiful, comfortable and conducive to the needs of families. The shelter has not been touched in 20+ years as we’ve endured budget restraints and focused almost exclusively on lifesaving services.

• Grow our base of volunteers and in-kind donations so programs and facility maintenance don’t go unmet due to the limited financial resources experienced from lack of funding.

• Fund and develop an employment program, whereby new staff will help survivors by connecting them to education and employment opportunities, and leading them to self-sufficiency.

• Create more long-term sustainability by pursuing Medicaid certification and opening a new stream of revenue. A Safe Place delivers thousands of billable hours of behavioral health services for which we don’t receive any reimbursement from Medicaid or third-party insurance.

• Develop meaningful opportunities to engage women and increase philanthropy from female donors through events like Wine Women & Shoes.

DID YOU KNOW?

In 2016, five women in Lake County, Illinois, lost their lives in domestic violence-related homicides, a rate as high as the worst neighborhood in Chicago.

Together, we can do more to save lives and stop the cycle of violence.

A YEAR OF FREEDOM AND TRANSFORMATIONIn 2016, we gave the gift of freedom to thousands. We helped 14,533 people when they needed us most. We answered 2,464 calls to our crisis line. We opened our doors when 227 victims of domestic violence needed emergency shelter. We guided 3,306 courageous survivors through the court-room experience of requesting an order of protection. We were there when 210 children needed a safe, supervised way to visit their parents. And we helped to prevent violence by providing education to 5,836 people in the community.

Freedom is a gift. And it is a gift we could not so freely give without the ongoing and generous support of donors like you. Without you, the calls would go unanswered. The shelter doors would close. The victims in court rooms would face the system — and even their abusers — without someone to hold their hands. The abusers themselves would never get the interventions they need to stop the cycle of violence. And the children who have witnessed and endured the trauma of domestic violence would be lost to a world that expects them to simply carry on as if their lives have not been shattered.

When you make a gift to A Safe Place, you may be surprised to find that your gift buys far more than you ever imagined. More self-sufficiency. More lasting safety. More honest-to-goodness, heartfelt charity than the average charity can deliver.

When compared to other nonprofits of similar budgetary size, A Safe Place is truly quite remarkable. We provide more breadth and depth of services and facilities than other domestic violence organizations, and we do a better job than almost anyone in the nation when it comes to removing the barriers between victims and lasting safety. In the United States, on average, a domestic violence victim will return to their abuser 7-8 times before either making it to lasting safety or dying. Yet, at A Safe Place, 94 percent of the survivors who leave our shelter have not gone back to their abusers as of their six-month check-in with us. Freedom is a gift that keeps on giving.

When you make a gift to A Safe Place, it is invested wisely. We use in-kind donations and volunteer support in unparalleled fashion so that dollars go further. And our overhead costs are only 12 percent — significantly lower than the cost of running most social services agencies.

At A Safe Place, we pay tribute to the donors who make our life-changing and life-saving work possible. When you support us, you’re impacting human life in profound ways. And when you become part of the community of donors who are working to eradicate domestic violence, you are met with transparency about our programming, our management and our financials. You deserve nothing less.

Thank you for all you have done to support domestic violence survivors and their children. We are humbled and grateful, and we ask that you please continue your generous support. Together, we will accomplish much in the coming year — we’ll give the gift of freedom to thousands more people right here in Lake County. We’ll give them the safety, dignity and opportunity they deserve.

With appreciation for all that you do,

Kate Johnson Board President

Pat Davenport Executive Director

A SAFE PLACE’S MISSION & VISIONAs the leading advocate for eliminating domestic violence in northern Illinois, A Safe Place provides emergency shelter, affordable housing, advocacy, and individual and group supportive services to survivors of domestic violence and their children; and intervention services for abusers to learn accountability for their choices and actions. A Safe Place also presents educational programs to professionals to build awareness of domestic violence, to students in classrooms and to the community at large. It is our goal that by helping others learn more about domestic violence, its causes, and appropriate responses, we can encourage a comprehensive response to the domestic violence in our midst, breaking the cycle of violence and creating safe and healthy communities.
