I would also like to offer our sincere commiserations to those who were unable to reach that first "checkpoint" of acceptance.

It really saddens me to refuse entry to so many 'would be' competitors, but these days, the lists are usually full before Christmas and we cannot impose further demands upon the environment and risk having the event banned altogether which is what would happen if the number of competitors were to be increased.

OBSERVATIONS FROM THE EDITOR

Well, the 17th S.L.M.M. has now become history. All in all, it was one of the best we have had so far although we are still learning.

The pre-marathon period still rerriains a headache with phone calls and letters from disappointed would be entrants.

We are also plagued with requests by competitors asking what the essential equipment is necessary.

Although this is clearly printed on the front of the application forms, I shall refresh your memories by printing them again herewith.

RULES 1. All competitors must hand in their control card to an official, even if they are

retiring, otherwise the mountain rescue may be called out. 2. All competitors must follow the Country Code. In particular it is forbidden to climb

walls or fences. Enclosed farmland may only be crossed on a public right of way. 3. Every pair must remain together at all times except in the event of an emergency. 4. Each individual competitor must wear or carry the following at all times:

Suitable footwear, Rucksack, Sleeping Bag, Sweater, Long trousers, Waterproof jacket with hood, Waterproof overtrousers, Torch with min. 3v battery, Compass, Whistle, Pen/Pencil.

5. Each team must carry at all times: Tent including groundsheet, Poles and pegs, Stove/Fuel blocks, Matches, Food for 2 days, Emergency food, Plasters and Bandage.

SLMM T-Shirts. The supply of T-shirts which include the year and venue of the event can only be guaranteed by a prepaid advance order. This year, we had a few extra in stock but these were rapidly sold. The safest bet is to order in advance.

PHOTOGRAPHS. If any competitor lor marshal) has taken any unusual or interesting photographs of the event, we would be pleased to receive and consider them for publication in future booklets.

M arathon The SLAMM Sleeping bag can be classified as a two and a half season bag having many uses outside the event itself.

It is very compact and weighs 800 grammes. It has a ripstop outer with a lining of pertex. The inner is lsodry Softee and perforated millium.

The bag also has the convenience of a full length zip and if they are purchased as a left and right they can, of course be zipped together.
