A SUMMER OF FUN! This has certainly been a very busy summer for DANK Chicago South. We are absolutely thrilled with the turnouts we had at our summer events and our trips to other clubs and festivals. Kicking off the summer lineup was the Sommerfest held on June 26 th at our grounds. Highlighted with German enter- tainers brought to us by Armin Homann. Singing and danc- ing outdoors on a lovely summer day was enjoyed by a full house. German Fest in Milwaukee in July was well attended by DANK Chicago South. A bus load of members and friends enjoyed the day at Miller Park and were joined by many oth- ers who didn’t make the bus trip. Several of our members, dressed in traditional costume, took advantage of the oppor- tunity to march in the parade winding throughout the fest grounds. Photos are posted on the walls at the DANK Haus. No summer is complete without our annual picnic for lots of family fun. The Hirsch German Band came to entertain our DANK family and friends. The cold beer and foot-long wieners were a big hit, as well as the many games that were played by all the kids, especially the money pit. A special thanks to Terry Viebach for orchestrating another fun-packed afternoon of games for kids of all ages. The weather was perfect for the Frankfort Fall Festival and many of our members came out to participate in the parade as well as cheer us on from the sidelines. Leading our group with the club banner was Heidi Walthier and Kirsten Iversen, followed by the color guard flag holders: Gail Knight, Mike Konrath and Matthias Dietz. The Rheinischer Prinz Joseph and Prinzessin Debbie and page Tina rode in a beautiful Audi driven by Jake and Margarethe Setter. Andrea Dietz, our National Youth Ambassador, rode in a classic 1970 Cadillac DeVille driven by Rich Bonzani, a friend of Dan Duffy. Eddy and Stefanie Walthier loaded up the decorated truck and trailer with the rest of our members who sang along with Reinhard Richter, on his accordion, and Gary Dietz, on his trumpet, throughout the parade route. Last, but not least, Anne Stromberg showed her spirit pulling her German decorations with her scooter. We were all proud to represent DANK and “Germans Share the Spirit by Flying the Black, Red and Gold”. We have so many great photos from this summer’s events and limited space here in the newsletter, so be sure to check out more photos online at dankchicagosouth.org. We were delighted to see so many friends from far and wide visit us this summer and we warmly welcome everyone to join us for a fantastic time at our Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 18 th at the clubhouse.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER: Bill SchmidtThe season of Herbst (fall) is soon upon us. Reaping therewards of hard work during the planting season will beginas the farmers gather their crops, just as our Germanicancestors have done.

Over the years, as president of this club, I have alwaysvalued the hard work of our many members. Volunteeringhas and always will be appreciated for whatever eventsbring us together at our clubhouse. It is wonderful to seesome of the new members asking how they can lend ahelping hand. It is also with great sadness to see that somany cherished and long-standing members are no longerwith us. The Heritage Center is a place for all of us togather with old and make new friends. This is a place ofmemories.

The current members of the Board will be disbanded inNovember. Some may be re-elected and others may choseto step down. Vacancies of open positions will need to befilled at the November election. The Board and membersmeet on the 3rd Sunday of the month. This is a time when all our voices can be heard. If anyone cannot come to thesemeetings, we encourage you to speak/write/call us so yourthoughts can be forwarded for open discussion.

I hope to see and speak to as many members as possible atour Oktoberfest. This is a celebration of your hard workthroughout the years. Please come, lock arms, schunkel, have Spaß (fun) alle zusammen (all together)!
