“He had a really high cruising speed,” Willis said. “He came from
a really strong crop of three-year-olds, it’s touted as one of the best
they’ve had in recent years, and he had an ability to run amazing times
as well. He was incredibly consistent, it was only his last preparation
where he wasn’t finishing top four or five against some of the best
horses in Japan.
“He really does tick so many boxes, I struggled to find too many faults
with him when I was putting together our analysis on whether we should
chase him.”

“He was sold to a syndication group
when he was a yearling at a price of $1.4 million, but he was immediately
sold out, which tells just how attractive he was.”
Yoshida said that, although his performances at the highest level
came between 1600 metres and 2200 metres, he believes he could have
made a sprinter-miler if Japan’s program allowed for it. He also suggested
that he had precocity and longevity, two factors that should allow him to
translate well to the Australian industry.
“Al Ain’s performance was at
a high level for most of his racing
career and he also had a strong
mentality to perform well under
any circumstances,” he said.
“He was mainly racing at 1600
metres to 2000 metres, but the
amount of speed he had suggests
he could have also shown a high
performance over a shorter
distance.
“I am very confident that his
progeny will fit well with Australian
races and I look forward to seeing
his foals in Australia soon.”
Japanese racing expert Kate Hunter of Marugai Racing believes that
Chatswood Stud have managed to secure a tremendous deal by getting Al
Ain to stand down under.
“I think Al Ain is a great stallion prospect,” Hunter told ANZ Bloodstock
News. “With the successes of Deep Impact’s sons Kizuna and Real Impact
with their first crops on the track and his untimely passing last year, getting
your hands on a stallion prospect like this is an amazing opportunity.
“As a multiple Group 1 winner, capturing both the Japanese 2,000
Guineas and the Osaka Hai over 2000 metres, he should make for a
popular cover for those looking to produce a classic distance horse. He
won from 1600 metres to 2000 metres and was competitive against the
best Japan had to offer up to 2200 metres.
“He has great-looking conformation and he retired sound. He was
both precocious, winning both starts at two, and had the talent to extend
his career at the highest level through his five-year-old campaign on both
firm and soft ground. He has the potential to be the complete package
those looking for a top son of Deep Impact might be looking for.”
Al Ain will be one of three sons of Deep Impact to stand in Australia
this season, joining Coolmore Stud’s Saxon Warrior and Woodside Park
Stud’s Tosen Stardom.
He joins Chatswood mainstay Reward For Effort (Exceed And Excel),
who will stand at $11,000 (inc GST), and Inference (So You Think), whose
first yearlings will go through the sales ring in 2021; his fee is set at $6,600.

payments.
• PartnershipsA single partner in a partnership can be nominated. This single
partner must not be receiving JobKeeper from another source.• Trusts
A single individual beneficiary of a trust can be nominated to receive
JobKeeper payments. This individual beneficiary must not be receiving

• CompaniesA single director or shareholder of a company can be nominated.
These businesses will also receive JobKeeper payments for their other

These initiatives are a step forward, but
it is noted by accounting bodies, such as CPA
Australia, that they have limitations in ensuring
equitable access to JobKeeper within trust,

Of all the recent government Covid-19 initiatives recently announced, it is generally thought that the JobKeeper payment for employers is only available to profitable horse businesses that have established employees. If you thought this was the case, read on, upon review of the recently announced JobKeeper legislation, I have some pleasant surprises for you.Below, I will work through the four common business structures and explain how it is possible for business owners that operate as sole traders or through trusts, partnerships and companies, to be eligible for JobKeeper even if their businesses are currently in losses and/or they aren’t being paid wages.

JobKeeper – positive updatecould benefit your horse business
JobKeeper payment – quick overviewA JobKeeper payment is a minimum payment ($1,500 per fortnight) the Government will pay to eligible businesses (defined below) to ensure they are able to keep their eligible employees (defined below) employed by them during this Covid-19 period. The first payment will be received by employers from the ATO in the
first week of May, 2020 and will be backdated to be payable from the scheme commencement of March 30, 2020. Payments under JobKeeper can be received up to September 27, 2020.• Eligible employers
All businesses who meet the turnover tests below can now register their interest with the ATO to receive the JobKeeper payment for their employees. Update to “Turnover tests” for employers All businesses (including sole traders) can now register their interest to
receive the JobKeeper payments for their employees (or themselves if sole traders) if they meet the various turnover tests. The most applicable test to the horse industry is that their turnover has been reduced by more than 30 per cent relative to a comparable period a year ago (of at least a month).
Since our original release on JobKeeper a few weeks ago, the ATO has given more details as to how to apply the “turnover test”. This is a crucial consideration for employers and is noted below.
How to calculate a fall in turnover for the first fortnight starting 30 March 2020To work out your fall in turnover, you can compare either:• GST turnover for March, 2020 with GST turnover for March, 2019• projected GST turnover for April, 2020 with GST turnover for April, 2019• projected GST turnover for the quarter starting April 2020 with GST
turnover for the quarter starting April, 2019How you choose to project your fall in turnover is not dependent on whether you report a quarterly or monthly BAS, though you can do that if it is easier.
If you work out that you qualify for the JobKeeper payments for the first fortnight because your turnover has declined by the relevant amount, you remain eligible and do not need to keep testing turnover in following months. However, you will have ongoing monthly reporting requirements. More information will be provided soon. The ATO also has the discretion to set out alternative tests that can
establish your eligibility when turnover periods are not appropriately comparable (for example, if your business has been in operation less than a year). We will provide more information soon about alternative tests.

Godolphin colt Tassort (Brazen

a surprise addition to Newgate

with the farm - in conjunction with partners

Tassort, the half-brother to Group 1 winners

will stand for $11,000 (inc GST), with Newgate’s
Director of Stallions Bruce Slade admitting
that the farm is taking a chance with a colt who

balanced approach in a volatile economic

colours and I think everyone’s first memory of the
horse is that he is that X-factor horse that was the
early favourite for the Golden Slipper. Everyone
was so excited after his debut to see where he’d
go and where he’d get to, but unfortunately, due
to injury, he was never able to fulfill the potential
that he had shown on debut.”
That debut was an electric five and a quarter
length victory in the Golden Gift (1100m) at
Rosehill in November, 2018. It was a win that saw
Tassort assume early favouritism for that season’s Golden Slipper Stakes
(Gr 1, 1200m), with form analysts rating his performance through the
roof: The Rating Bureau’s Daniel O’Sullivan declared it a “Group 1 class”
performance that was “stamped
by a sharp turn of foot, terrific late
strength and fast overall time”,
placing him in rarefied company.
Unfortunately, the colt only
raced once more, when he was
sent out as an odds-on favourite
in the Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2,
1100m) at Rosehill. Slow from the
stalls, he settled near the rear in an
evenly-run race, making ground
late into second but unable to reel
in Time To Reign (Time For War).
“We had key indicators
through this horse’s career that
told us he was elite and just
never had the chance to show it,”
Slade said. “We are big on time ratings and data. Daniel O’Sullivan from
The Ratings Bureau gave this guy a 103 on debut when he won. He was
impressive to the eye that day but when the time data came back, it said,
listen, this is as impressive a two-year-old debut that we’ve seen since the
likes of Estijaab and Extreme Choice. To be honest, at the time, we thought
we had a colt to be really concerned about on the racetrack, wearing our
Newgate cap!
“Obviously we never got to see that ability but on the back of that
performance, that debut, James McDonald came out and said he was the
real deal and James Cummings was very much of the same opinion, he
had a very high opinion of the horse. Everyone that had something to do
with him plus the time data suggested he had the ability to be that real
elite performer.
Slade continued: “At the end of the day, for all of us, our key criteria
for any young stallion standing at Newgate is that elite race performance.
Horses don’t have to win their Group 1s, but if they showed elite
performance, they generally are your best chance of becoming an
important stallion.
“I just feel you only have to look at the general sires list to see that. They are
either proper, proper Group 1 horses, or they were horses who had that ability but
didn’t get to showcase their true potential.

let him find his feet, I think he’s the best horse
in the race’. It didn’t look a strong race on paper
and hopefully now the handicapper doesn’t
destroy him. These young horses, they need to
slowly earn their points the right way,” Fownes
said.
Moreira was taken with the three-year-old,
who earned his second win at just his fourth
outing.
“He’s a nice young horse with a bright future
– it’s hard to say where he’ll get to but there’s no
doubt he’s better than this class,” Moreira said.
Purton gained his victory on the Paul
O’Sullivan-trained Harrier Jet (Dane Shadow)
in section three of the Class 4 Renfrew Handicap
(1200m).
While Moreira is locked in an unyielding
battle with Purton, Fownes has a side contest
going on with trainers’ premiership leader Ricky
Yiu. Fownes prides himself on being the leading
trainer at the Valley but Yiu moved to within one
win of his current season’s bounty when Eternal
Harvest (Smart Missile) took race four.
“Good luck to him!” Fownes said after Sky
Darci’s success, with a jocular look that said
‘not on my watch’. Then came Green Luck and a
three-win cushion – Fownes now has 28 wins at
the city track to Yiu’s 25.

Yiu’s steady Harvest Eternal Harvest’s victory in the Class 3
Durham Handicap (1000m) kept Yiu ticking
along at the top of the standings and maintained
his five-win lead over next-best Francis Lui,
who was also on the mark.
“I’m still keeping the faith but this win doesn’t
give me any more confidence,” Yiu said. “There
are still nine meetings to go, so there’s time for
someone to catch me – anything can happen.”
Eternal Harvest’s second win at his fifth start
came seven and a half weeks after his last run.
“He’s been to Conghua and that’s helped
him; like a lot of horses that go there, he’s more
settled now,” Yiu said.
“Vincent (Ho) held the horse when the
pace was fast in the early part of the race. He led
all the way when he won before but this time he
enjoyed chasing them and he’s improved since
the last time he ran.”
Eternal Harvest’s previous success was
at Sha Tin over 200 metres farther but Ho
believes the minimum dash suits the three-
year-old.
“It was a pretty good win,” Ho said. “His last
run was disappointing, he felt weak, but today
he was a totally different horse. I think Ricky
freshening him up helped the horse and 1000
metres suited him – he can do it at 1200 but the
1000 metres suits him, the pace is on and he’s
got some early pace.”
The rider sealed a brace when he launched
the Lui-trained Massive Pocket (Stratum) fast
and late down the middle of the track in the
finale, the Class 2 Alnwick Handicap (1200m).
The 49/1 shot ran down the Moreira-ridden
Hong Kong Win (Mossman).
Tony Cruz kept Yiu and Lui within range
thanks to California Rad (Fastnet Rock) winning
the Class 3 Hereford Handicap (1200m) under
Karis Teetan. Cruz has 53 wins and sits third in
the trainers’ table, six behind Yiu.
Vagner Borges continued his good form
to bag a 13th success this term, nine of which
have been achieved since the start of May.
The Brazilian made all on the Richard Gibson-
trained Invaluable (Ocean Park) in the Class 4
Rhondda Handicap (1800m).
Antoine Hamelin, another rider enjoying a
purple patch, took section two of the Renfrew
Handicap on the Chris So-trained Master
Albert (Magic Albert).
Curling Luxury (O’Reilly) was third at Sha
Tin on Sunday but thrived on the quick back-
up to win the Class 5 Selkirk Handicap (1650m)
under Dylan Mo. The seven-year-old’s seventh
career win gave trainer Me Tsui his 31st this
term but only his second since the end of April.
Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on
Sunday.

The Falcone family colours were
famously sported by brothers and
top three-year-olds Divine Prophet
(Choisir) and Proisir (Choisir) in
the last decade.
Proisir’s son Scenic Warrior has a long way
to go to join the pair but, on the strength of his
maiden win at Warwick Farm on Monday, he
is likely to be given his chance to head down
a Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) path in the
spring.
The Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes-
trained Scenic Warrior is already in the spelling
paddock following his determined victory on
Monday at what was his second start following
a fast-finishing fifth to Concealed (Deep Field)
at Canterbury on debut.
Sitting much closer to the speed on
Monday, he didn’t look entirely comfortable
on the wet track but handled it better than
his rivals. He edged clear for a three-quarter
length success over early leader Gunnamatta
(Headwater) with Prompt Prodigy (More Than
Ready) a head away in third.
“He's a really nice horse going forward,"
Michael Hawkes told Sky Thoroughbred
Central. "He was probably a little bit stiff at
Canterbury. He drew a bad barrier and had to
go too far back but he really hit the line solidly.
"Today, Warwick Farm, he jumped out and
travelled pretty well and he got away with a win.
Actually, we would have been disappointed
had he got beaten, but he stuck into the fight.
He'll more than likely head to the paddock and
he'll come back a really nice horse later on in
the spring."
Hawkes added: “These colours have been
pretty successful with us with the Falcone
family. Divine Prophet was their last good
horse that we had and there have been a few
in between. Being by Proisir, it's probably a bit
sentimental to the Falcone family.”
Scenic Warrior is the second named foal out
of Pemba Nepali (Domesday); the first, Napster
(Proisir), won twice over the Canterbury 1250
metres earlier this year and has now joined the
Hong Kong stable of John Size.
Further back, Scenic Warrior descends
from one of the most prominent Woodlands
families. Second dam Nepal (Quest For Fame)
is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Crawl (Dr
Grace), while the family also features another
Group 1 winner in Trapeze Artist (Snitzel).
Pemba Nepali, a Sale maiden winner, was
offered for sale by Goodwood Farm at the 2015
Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale. She was
bought by Kitchwin Hills for $29,000.
Having missed the 2017 breeding season
after Scenic Warrior was foaled in late
November, she has again visited Proisir the last
two years; she produced a filly in August last
year, while she is back in foal to him once more.
Proisir will stand at Rich Hill Stud in New
Zealand this season for NZ$9,000 (plus GST).

After more than 25 years based in
the Hunter Valley as a dedicated
servant to the thoroughbred,
it could be easy to take that
spectacular horse country for granted.
Not so for Godolphin broodmare supervisor
Chris Cooper, who admits that the Woodlands
farm on which he has worked for all bar one of
those years is now simply a part of who he is.
“Woodlands to me is not simply a place of
employment as my wife and I have chosen it to be
our home for the last 26 years and it is also where
we have raised our two children Danielle and
Rachel,” Cooper told ANZ Bloodstock News. “It is
fair to say that Woodlands is in our souls.
“The entire atmosphere of the place is
incredible. You see it in the reaction of people
who come and visit, they are amazed. It is much
more than a place to work.”
Cooper has been nominated by Woodlands
assistant manager Simon Johnson for the
prestigious Dedication to Breeding Award,
one of seven categories that will be recognised
through the 2020 Stud and Stable Staff Awards,
supported by Godolphin. Johnson himself is a
nominee for the Leadership Award.
“It’s normal to see Chris at work at first light
every day and you’ll find him driving through
the paddocks each evening just before dark
checking on his mares,” Johnson said. “He
treats the place as he would if it were his own
and the mares are like his own family.

with his first introduction coming as a youngster
courtesy of the late Peter Flynn.
“My first exposure to horses was when I was
growing up,” he said. “I was lucky enough to
spend time at the old Segenhoe Stud, which is
now known as Vinery, with Peter Flynn. Peter
instilled a love of horses in me and taught me
the value of a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay.
“In 1994 I secured a position at Woodlands
working with the yearlings and so, as
newlyweds, my wife Kristine and I moved to the
Hunter Valley.”
Having joined Woodlands in 1994, Cooper
became involved with the Ingham racing empire
at a time when the poultry kings were about to
experience their greatest run of success.
“I fondly remember the days of Octagonal
racing and then retiring to stud. When he
arrived, it was like living with a rock star,” he
recalled. “Another stallion I have been fortunate
enough to have a lot to do with is Lonhro. I
remember him being born and I’m privileged to
have helped to raise him to become a racehorse
just as good as his father.”
Cooper has held a number of positions
across the Woodlands farm and has become
knowledgeable across so many of their
operations.
“After working with the yearlings
for two years, I rode a stock pony for a
further two years back when all of our
stock work was done with horses,” he
said. “I thoroughly enjoyed getting paid
to ride as I was endurance riding and I
was able to mix business with pleasure.
“In future years I worked at the
foaling unit and serving barn before
being promoted to a supervisor’s role
and I became involved with all areas
of reproduction. While working for the
Ingham family, I was lucky enough to
work with some wonderful stallions
like Dr Grace, Night Shift, Brief Truce
and of course Octagonal.”
Cooper’s one year away from Woodlands
came in 2004, when he joined Widden Stud as
their assistant manager.
“The opportunity arose to expand my
experience so I accepted a position at Widden
Stud as their assistant stud manager,” he said.
“My time at Widden was a great experience and
I was glad to be part of a property that has such
a rich history in the thoroughbred industry.
Then, in January, 2005 I returned to Woodlands
again in a supervisory role.”
In 2008, the Inghams sold the majority of
their racing and breeding assets, including
Woodlands, to Godolphin. While that could
have proved a stumbling block, as any transition
can, Cooper is grateful for the opportunities
he’s been afforded in the years since.
“For instance I was twice chosen by
Godolphin to be the Australian instructor
to travel to Beijing in China to help induct
some Chinese University graduates into a
course called the DITI (Darley International
Thoroughbred Internship) program. I found
this to be a very rewarding experience
and it ignited a passion for training. I
believe that it is our obligation to share
our knowledge and experience with the
younger generation of horse men and
women entering our industry.”
In his current role as broodmare
supervisor at Woodlands, Cooper deals
with some of the best-bred and best-
performing mares on a daily basis.
“At the moment, some of my
favourite mares that I look after are
Ouachita, the mother of the Golden Slipper
winner Kiamichi, and also Mnemosyne, who
is the mother of one of our exciting young
stallions Impending,” he said. “Both of these
mares have had ongoing feet issues so I have
worked very closely with them over many years
to help keep them sound.
“My favourite older retired mare would
have to be Excited Angel, who won 12 races
and has produced nine winners. Excited Angel
is now 32 years young and looks a picture of
health.
“Just recently I have received some very well-
known retired race fillies into my care, which
include Alizee, Kiamichi and Pohutukawa. For me
to say that I am now responsible for the care of these
fillies is something that I’m very proud about.”
The Dedication to Breeding Award winner
receives, from Magic Millions, a trophy and
$10,000, with $3,000 to their employer to share
amongst staff.
“For me, being nominated for such an
award has been very humbling particularly
because I have been nominated by my peers,”
he said. “When you look at the horse people
that have been finalists for the Dedication To
Breeding category in the past, it is hard for me
to believe that my name is now associated with
these great men and women and I thank Simon
Johnson for nominating me.
“To win this award would be an honour,
however I am very humbled to make it this far. I
would like to wish all the finalists the best of luck.”
The Stud and Stable Staff Awards will be
presented during a virtual ceremony on June 17.
The entire atmosphere of the place is incredible. You
see it in the reaction of people who come and visit, they are amazed. It is much more than a place to work- Chris Cooper

VERDICT An interesting race. Mythical sets the standard on ratings andthere might be more to come but he does not quite convince.
Preference is for the unbeaten CROSSFIREHURRICANE who stepped up to Listedclass when comfortably holding reopposing stable companion Choice Of Mine atDundalk in February. He can confirm those placings with maidens Chiracua andGold Maze providing plenty of interest too. [Justin O’Hanlon]

VERDICT Despite there being no overseas runners for at least half acentury, the opening Classic of the Irish Flat season remains a
fascinating affair. The fact that Seamie Heffernan partners LOPE Y FERNANDEZ,by the same sire as last year’s winner, must be considered a positive and astrongly-run mile on quick ground could be right up his street. He gets the nod overSiskin, who is undoubtedly talented but needs to prove his stamina, and the classyArmory, one that may prefer further in time. [Mark Boylan]
