Our attempt is to stabilize the soil and get desired result at optimum value. The soil used in the study is taken from Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh in India. Keywords : Black cotton soil, Rice Husk Ash, Free swell index, Strength, Stabilization. 1. GENERAL INTRODUCTION Soil is accumulation of mineral particles produced by the physical/chemical disintegration of rocks, that includes air, water, organic matter and other matter/substance. It is a porous and non homogeneous, earthen material. Its behavior (engineering behavior) is mainly influenced by changes in density and moisture content. Expansive soil has potential for shrinking and swelling, and thus is a problematic soil; due to change in moisture content. All the continents of the Earth have varied proportions of this type of soil. And this soil causes destruction, which has been reported by many countries; especially India. India has large portion of land covered by this soil, which is called ‘Black cotton soil’. ‘Black Cotton soil’ causes surface cracks and opens in dry seasons. Though these cracks disappear in next season, ie, winter season, but still an uneven surface stays back. Black cotton soil has low strength and are prone to irregular volume changes. 2. PROBLEMS DUE TO BLACK COTTON SOIL In India, where we see a wide variation in temperature throughout the year, ‘Black Cotton soil’ is a challenge for the engineers. They are highly compressible and plastic, when they are saturated; hence such soils undergo consolidation settlements of high magnitude, when footings are made on such soils. 3. METHODS OF STABILIZATION OF EXPANSIVE SOILS To avoid the swelling & shrinkage behavior of expansive soils, soil should be stabilized by using various methods. For stabilization of expansive soils, there are two methods: Mechanical Stabilization and Admixture Stabilization.
