The Humoreske is one of the loviest but least performed of Shumann's piano compositions. Although it possesses weaknesses, such as imperfection of formal construction, the manifold beauties in its pages will be satisfying to any piano student. It certainly deserves more frequent presentations, for its singing melodies, its colorful, rich harmonies, its fascinating rhythms, and its intertwining polyphonywill be enjoyed by both the listener and the performer. Since the Humoreske is a number particularly typical of Schumann's style, the present study has been undertakenfrom that angle. Therefore, the attempt has been made not only to analyze the contents of the Humoreske but also to try to understand the elements of Schumann's style as depicted by it.
