The innovation is integration

The patented Armstrong stain-less steel Trap Valve Station*(TVS) makes what used to belong, complicated steam instal-lation stories simple and com-pact. It shortens by integratingcomponents—specifically aninverted bucket steam trap andtwo or more valves.

In other words, the TVS makesit all one, delivering the func-tions of multiple componentsin a dramatically smaller unit.It integrates two productsof proven quality in a packageof revolutionary versatility.

They operate more efficientlylonger because the invertedbucket is the most reliable steamtrap operating principle known. It is the principle that matters—year after energy-saving year.

Tests, installations and third-partyproof from around the world provethe superiority of the invertedbucket steam trap. Now, the TVSmultiplies its energy benefits byteaming it with an energy-efficientpiston valve and merging thesetwo star performers into a pack-age that eliminates many of thepotential leak points in piping.

Armstrong gives you a new handle on energy conservation, installation and maintenance costs

The Armstrong stainless steelinverted bucket steam trap sim-ply carries a good idea to itslogical conclusion by sealing all the proven IB advantages in a tamperproof, corrosion-resistant package. Lightweightand compact, Armstronginverted buckets can withstandfreeze-ups without damage. Infact, we’re so sure of their per-formance we guarantee themfor three years against leaks.

With the introduction of the360° connector several yearsago, Armstrong added evengreater utility to this stainlesssteel workhorse. The universalconnector made it possible toinstall inverted bucket efficien-cy and long service life in anypiping configuration with littleor no repiping.

TVS: New role for the connector Now the concept of the Series3000 stainless steel Trap ValveStation gives the universal connector another job: match-maker. It brings together astainless steel inverted bucketsteam trap and piston valves

in a variety of practical combi-nations. In fact, we can meetthe specifications for any typeof steam trap. The pistonvalves are of the same designas those used on the castiron TVS—with the same benefits: dual sealing action, automatic retightening and in-line repairability.

The standard version of thestainless steel TVS uses theconnector block to merge asteam trap and two shutoffvalves into one integrated unit. The connector block can alsoaccommodate two additionalvalves. One option is for ableed valve to depressurize thetrap before removing it fromthe connector block. The sec-ond is for a test valve to testand evaluate trap operation.

Test… and saveSteam trap testing is a well-accepted component ofaggressive energy manage-ment. Certainly, it’s essentialto the efficiency of a welldesigned and properly maintained steam system.

The Trap Valve Station allows youto test with greater safety andaccuracy as well as substantialsavings in time and labor cost.

Consider this example: A 3/16"(4.8 mm) orifice leaking 100 lb(45 kg) of steam per hour at50 psi (3.4 bar) will squander$4,380 worth of energy in oneyear, assuming a steam cost of$5/1,000 lb (450 kg). Numberslike these make it easy to seethe importance of reliable trapmonitoring.

Most experts agree that testingsteam traps with test valves isthe most reliable of availablemethods because it permitsyou to check trap dischargevisually. With test valves youcan see evidence of trap failurethat is difficult to detect withother test methods. And thequicker you see what you maybe missing now, the quickeryou can begin saving the pre-cious energy failed traps waste. The TVS enhances your capa-bility to check trap operation. It also gives you a built-in wayto block and bleed traps formaximum safety and ease ofmaintenance.

Safety, savings and simplifica-tion. Those are the benefits ofTVS when it comes to routinetrap testing. Installation is sim-pler. Maintenance is simpler. And regular testing is simpler, safer and takes less time...so it saves you money.

The proof is in the piston

Armstrong met half the challengeof the TVS decades ago by invent-ing the inverted bucket steam trap. Its long service life and energy-saving potential are unquestioned. When it came to integrating avalve with the inverted bucket inthe Trap Valve Station, we chose a piston valve. It’s the only type of valve capable of matching theinverted bucket in reliability andenergy efficiency.

All types of valves—plug valves, gate valves, piston valves andeven ball valves—have been

Open Position

• Dual sealing action. The piston valveis a seatless valve which includes two graphite and stainless steel valve sealingrings that seal the stem and function as a valve seat. This combination provides long-term protection against leaks to theatmosphere and downstream piping.

• Self-cleaning action. Stainless steel piston slides without rotating betweenthe two valve sealing rings, preventing dirt from damaging the sealing surfaces.

summoned for duty in steam ser-vice. Due to its excellent sealingcharacteristics in steam serviceand because it has no gland pack-ing, the piston valve is frequentlyselected for steam systems.

People who have used it over thepast 20 years can testify that leak-age to atmosphere is extremelyrare, even without any maintenance. The elastic contact between pistonand valve sealing rings provides a perfect tightness, both in-line and to atmosphere.

The Piston Valve

• Sealing integrity. Flexible disc springs automatically provide leak tightnessby exerting pressure which keeps the upper and lower valve sealing rings compressed at all times. Sealing tight-ness is assured by the compression of the sealing rings against the piston and the valve body. This combination of disc springs and dual valve seal rings protects against expansion and contraction due to heating and cooling. This assures dependable operation, even after years of service.

Steam system valves, whatevertheir design, are used to isolatesteam and condensate lines orwhen a faulty steam trap needs to be removed from the line. Thismeans the valves stay in the openposition for long periods and arenearly always in contact with theatmosphere. It is not surprisingtherefore that when the valvesneed to be closed, they can oftenprove difficult to operate. Our expe-rience and the demands from endusers for energy efficiency have ledus to a sealing system designedespecially for steam service.

4

Closed Position

• Protected valve stem. The valve stem and sealing surfaces are completely pro-tected from dirt and corrosion by the stemcap, whether in an open or closed position.

• In-line repairability. All valve componentsmay be easily replaced in-line.

• Long-term operation. Piston valve designassures actuation even after many years without operation.

Test… and saveSteam trap testing is a well-accepted component of aggressiveenergy management. Certainly, it’sessential to the efficiency of a well-designed and properly maintainedsteam system.

Consider this example:A 1/8" (3.2 mm) orifice leaking 45 lb (20.4 kg) of steam per hour at 100 psi (6.9 bar) will squander$2,102 worth of energy in one year, assuming a steam cost of $5.00/1,000 lb (450 kg). Numberslike these make it easy to see the importance of reliable trap monitoring.

Most experts agree that testingsteam traps with test valves is themost reliable of available methodsbecause it permits you to check

trap discharge visually. With testvalves you can see evidence oftrap failure that is difficult to detectwith other test methods. And thequicker you see what you may bemissing now, the quicker you canbegin saving the precious energyfailed traps waste.

Outlet Test Valve provides two valuable system checks:■ Test Valve - a visual test is the best

method for determining a steamtrap’s operation.

■ Condensate Isolation Valve - isolates a steam trap for repair or replacementand bleeds pressure from the trap before it is removed for replacement.

Inlet Test Valve becomes four valves in one:■ Start-up Valve - enables drip/tracer

lines to heat up quicker on start-up.■ By-pass Valve - allows drip/tracer lines

to stay in operation if trap replacement is necessary.

■ Drain Valve - drains condensate out of the drip/tracer line at the end of the season.

■ Steam Isolation Valve - isolates a steam trap for repair or replacement.
