The benefits of staying physically active
are continuously promoted for both
physical and mental health, but larger
benefits of supporting organized sports will
include new paths out of poverty as well.
These initiatives can range from large-scale
events that provide opportunity for large
investments of money and infrastructure—
such as the Olympics and the World Cup,
which have been hosted in the developing
world in recent years—to smaller projects that
focus on individual development and skills
training.

Some players in the Catalysts for Change game suggested ways of using
organized sports to build local commerce, prevent crime and other unhealthy
habits associated with high levels of unemployment, and even promote
organizational and administrative skills.

The Homeless World Cup, which seeks to improve lives of homeless through sport and other opportunities, began in 2003 in Vienna with 18 nations competing. The tournament took place in Mexico in 2012, to be followed by Poland in 2013 with 64 competing countries.
