In 1858, nearly a decade before thecreation of the Dominion of Canada, ayoung Scottish immigrant named Philip S.Ross gave up a secure position as aMontreal ship’s chandler to found hisown accounting firm. When Ross wasposthumously inducted into the CanadianBusiness Hall of Fame, the citationdescribed him as “one of the Fathers of Accounting in North America.”

One hundred and fifty years later, the firm he began – Deloitte Canada –has become not only Canada’s largestprofessional services firm, but also one ofour largest businesses, serving thousandsof clients through a network of morethan 55 offices and 7,600 people.

How did the original enterprisebecome one of Canada’s importantservice providers? Through a commit-ment to client service, delivered byprofessionally competent people whocare about their clients’ welfare.

But growing from one person tomore than 7,600 was not achieved bysimply recruiting and retaining goodpeople. It was done by reaching out inwhat was originally a field of hundreds ofsmall professional firms. Over the years, anumber of mergers permitted the firm toserve its clients better with a wider rangeof offerings.

One of the largest of the mergersoccurred in the late 1950s when P.S. Ross& Sons combined with George A. Touche. In 1990, Touche Ross joined forces withDeloitte Haskins & Sells Samson Bélair, and has since operated as SamsonBélair/Deloitte & Touche in Quebec andDeloitte & Touche elsewhere in Canada.

Through the years and through themergers, the focus has always been onclients – on major Canadian corporationssuch as Sun Life, the Royal Bank, thePotash Corporation of Saskatchewan, Bell, the Irving Companies, and on thousandsand thousands of entrepreneurs.

Some of these entrepreneurs becameworld famous, like Guy Laliberté, founderof Cirque du Soleil. Others simplycontributed to their local community byproviding goods and services.

For 150 years, the firm that hasbecome Deloitte has served clients well byrecruiting and retaining people who careabout their clients’ success. This is whyDeloitte consistently strives to be one ofCanada’s top rated employers – and whyit will continue to succeed in serving itsdiverse client base.

In the history of Deloitte, accountingplays a central, but not an exclusive role.Over the past 150 years, the focus hasshifted from basic record keeping tosophisticated financial reporting. Thehistory of Deloitte not only records thedevelopment of accounting in Canada,it is also a study in the evolution ofprofessional services – from the dayswhen bookkeepers in “public practice”focused mainly on estates, trusts andliquidations, to the diverse serviceofferings of today in which auditors, tax specialists, management consultantsand financial advisors routinely assistorganizations in addressing a widerange of financial, operational, regulatory and other matters.

Philip S. Ross, Deloitte’s earliestfounder, was quite an innovator. Hemade improvements to his operationsand built his business by identifying theneeds of his clients and earning theirtrust. As he developed new servicesand methodologies to help his clients and his firm succeed, Ross set thestage for the emerging accountingprofession – and for the future ofprofessional services in Canada.

Many other professional servicespioneers set the stage for the Deloitteof today. In the early years of the 20thcentury, the firms started by WilliamWelch Deloitte and George A. Touchein the UK had established offices inCanada. In 1909, J. Arthur LaRuefounded the first public accountingoffice in Quebec City, and the firstFrench-Canadian practice in the

province. His firm served a prestigiousclientele and eventually became theSamson Bélair firm, which after a latermerger became Samson Bélair/Deloitte& Touche in Quebec.

Through 150 years of history –Canada’s birth as a nation, two worldwars interspersed with a depression, the baby boom and the age oftechnology, the firm that has becometoday’s Deloitte has prided itself onanticipating the needs of clients andmeeting those needs with innovativeservices delivered with relentlesspragmatism.

These days, a contemporaryDeloitte continually looks around the corner for its clients, helping themstay competitive in the current businessenvironment, while adapting toemerging market trends andexpectations such as CorporateResponsibility, International FinancialReporting Standards and ComputerForensics.

As a leading professional servicesfirm, Deloitte’s broad range of fullyintegrated services span accounting, assurance and advisory, tax, riskmanagement, business, financial and human capital consulting.

Today, Deloitte’s integratedapproach combines insight andinnovation from multiple disciplineswith business and industry knowledgeto help clients excel anywhere in the world.

Those arejust some of the accolades thatDeloitte has received recently, reinforcing its rank among Canada’smost sought-after workplaces fortalented professionals.

In 2007, Deloitte earned a place onHewitt Associates’ list of 50 BestCompanies to Work for in Canada. Thesurvey, reflecting the views of over2,000 human resources professionalsand 100,000 Canadian employees atnearly 120 organizations, waspublished in the January 2007 Reporton Business magazine and La Pressenewspaper.

What makes Deloitte such a greatplace to work? For starters, there are

opportunities for growth anddevelopment, collaboration withtalented, team-oriented peers, flexibilityand responsibility from day one. Forthese and other reasons, Deloitte hasfostered an energetic workforce, whereboth new entrants and veterans findsatisfying careers and room forprofessional growth.

A survey conducted by MediaCorpfor Maclean’s magazine also namedDeloitte one of Canada’s Top 100Employers for 2008 – the first time thatDeloitte has received this distinction.

Deloitte’s recent HR accolades don’tend there. Benefits Canada magazineincluded Deloitte among its list ofCanada’s 30 Best Pension and BenefitsPlans – for the second straight year.Deloitte also earned the top spot in arecent ranking of recruiting companiesby university students.

It’s no wonder that whencompanies seek the best and brightestprofessional services providers, Deloittecomes out on top – again.

Deloitte’s commitment to Canadiansociety isn’t just an external function.Deloitte walks the talk – outside and in– through initiatives that matter to thepublic and foster a workplace thatreflects and respects employees’ andpartners’ values concerning diversity, social giving and the environment.Deloitte recently appointed its firstChief Diversity Officer with theobjective of fostering an inclusive workenvironment at Deloitte whereemployees can achieve their fullpotential.

When you’ve got 7,600 peopleworking together, it’s that muchtougher to single out an individual whoembodies the group’s shared valuesand commitment to Canadians. Yetamong the countless individuals atDeloitte who make a difference eachday, Yezdi Pavri is clearly an inspiration.

A 30-year Deloitte veteran, Yezdi isthe Greater Toronto Area’s ManagingPartner. Beyond being a dynamiccontributor to Deloitte client services,he has helped strengthen Canada’scultural diversity through tirelesspersonal efforts.

As a new Canadian who hassucceeded in Canada, Yezdi knowswell that true abilities can be obscuredby cultural differences and a poorcommand of English. To help otherssurmount these barriers and achievetheir full potential, he has madeconcerted efforts to hire people basedon their inherent talent and skills.

“Helping immigrants succeed is not just an act of kindness, it’s goodfor our economy,” says Yezdi. “Byunderstanding, respecting andembracing individual similarities anddifferences, we can improve the qualityof life for all Canadians.”

Within Deloitte, Yezdi is a foundingmember and co-chair of the firm’sNational Diversity Council, an advisorybody that guides and supports thefirm’s efforts to foster an inclusiveenvironment.

He is also a Founding BoardMember and Treasurer of the TorontoRegion Immigrant Employment Council(TRIEC), and is closely involved in twocouncil initiatives: the MentoringPartnership, a program that connectsskilled immigrants with establishedprofessionals; and Career Bridge, whichcreates paid internship opportunities.

Beyond these efforts, Yezdi hasfurthered his impact by encouragingover 100 Deloitte people to act asmentors to recent immigrants. Notsurprisingly, many of those who getinvolved are first- or second-generationimmigrants who are pleased to havethe opportunity to give back.

In his bid to help new immigrantssucceed professionally in Canada, YezdiPavri has instilled a virtuous circle ofcharitable giving – one that continuesto build momentum by opening doorsand unlocking the potential of thoseseeking to achieve their best.

When it comes to employee-basedfundraising, Deloitte’s support of theUnited Way delivers results that growyear after year. A proud member of theUnited Way’s Million Dollar Club forthe past six years, Deloitte people set anew record in 2007, raising $3 million.True to the cause, this effort also

Past. Present. Future. The passage oftime has been very much on our mindsduring the 150th anniversary year ofDeloitte in Canada. In reviewing thefirm’s archives – and the history ofCanada – we are reminded that manyof today’s significant concerns likeupheavals in the financial and capitalmarkets, wildly fluctuating oil pricesand pandemics are not new issues. When a business is as old as ours, it isdoubtless that one of our predecessorfirms has had to deal with a similarsituation. Helping our clients overcomeadversity and prosper within a new anddifferent environment has always beena hallmark of the firm known today asDeloitte.

We are honoured to be leadingDeloitte into its 151st year in Canada. As we pore over the many wonderfulstories that comprise our history, weare struck by how much there is to belearned from them. We doubt Philip S.Ross would have imagined that thefirm he started, with its origins in theshipyard, would grow to be the largestprofessional services firm in thecountry. Then again, he had provenhimself to be an enterprising man, soperhaps he did imagine it. As we looktoward the next 150 years, the peopleof Deloitte will continue to make itsfounders proud with the things theyimagine into being.

Things like playing a leading role in the burgeoning area of corporateresponsibility, as both an advisor to ourclients and a committed participant.Things like being known across Canada

as an inclusive meritocracy, wherediversity is a way of life. Things likedeveloping innovative services forneeds that have yet to surface.

We will continue to channel thespirit of our founders to serve ourclients and our communities withinnovation and energy. It is for this

reason we come to work every day,and why we eagerly anticipate thefuture.

On the occasion of our 150thanniversary in Canada, we speak for all the people of Deloitte in offeringheartfelt thanks to all our clients, ourcommunities and our professions.

What a difference a day makes.

Imagine the impact of an entire organization

working on community projects. Every year

on our annual Impact Day, the people of

Deloitte leave their desks to volunteer across

the country – cleaning parks, painting

daycare centres, cooking meals and helping

new Canadians to write their resumes. It’s

one more way we foster strong communities.
