One More Week and

Great Lent Begins This year, in the Orthodox Church, the Holy Pascha

will be observed on April 19 and the Great Lent

begins on Monday, March 2nd. The practice of our

faith calls on us to pray, fast and give alms to the poor.

The week before Lent begins we give up consumption

of meats (meatfare) and on March 1st, we will give up

milk, eggs and dairy products. Prayer and fasting were

practiced and advised by the Lord Jesus Christ.

What changes should we implement in our life during

Lent? We urge our faithful to keep the fast and attend

all services scheduled during Great Lent! Let us give

up anything that is strident (in dress, music, Tv., noise,

dance, etc). Let’s direct our gifts of alms to the needy

and let us offer our energy to support useful causes

(hospitals, needy children or elderly, volunteer for

Fish Fry or other noble causes).

During this time of Lent, every faithful should repent

by coming to Confession and receive the Holy

Communion. With regard to prayer, each one of us

should read the Psalter daily, together with one chapter

from the Old Testament and one from the New

Testament. Other good readings are any devotional

lectures, lives of the saints or peaceful, Christ-centered

lecture. May the Lord grant us His peace and the

Grace of His Resurrection! .

Peste o săptămână începem

Postul Mare În acest an, în Biserica Ortodoxă, data Paștilor va fi în

19 aprilie, iar Postul Mare va începe luni, 2 martie.

Practica Bisericii noastre ne cheamă la rugăciune, post

și fapte de milostenie față de cei săraci. Săptămâna

care premerge Postul este vremea când renunțăm la

consumul cărnii (secul de carne), iar de la 1 martie

vom renunța și la produsele de lapte, ouă și brânză.

Rugăciunea și postul au fost practicate și recomandate

de Domnul Iisus Hristos.

Așadar, ce schimbări va trebui să facem în modul

nostru de viață, în acest Post? Îndemnăm pe

credincioșii noștri să postească și să participe la

serviciile religioase programate în Postul Mare! Să

renunțăm la tot ce este strident: în vestimentaţie,

muzică, radio-tv., dans, etc.. Să ne aducem aminte şi

să dăruim milostenii celor în nevoi, sprijinind cauzele

nobile (spitale, orfani, vârstnici, școli, biserici și

altele).

Pe durata postului, fiecare credincios este îndemnat să

se spovedească și să se împărtășească cu Sfânta

Cuminecătură. Cât despre rugăciune, să citim zilnic

Psaltirea și câte un capitol din Vechiul și Noul

Testament. Alte lecturi spirituale ne sunt recomandate,

precum viețile sfinților sau alte lecturi centrate pe

Hristos. Domnul să ne dăruiască tuturor pace și darul

Învierii Sale!

Din Imnografia Liturgică a Postului Ușile pocăinței deschide-mi mie, Dătătorule de viață, că

mânecă duhul meu la Biserica Ta cea sfântă, purtând locaș

al trupului cu totul spurcat. Ci ca un Îndurat curățește-l cu

mila milostivirii Tale!

+ În cărările mântuirii îndreptează-mă, Născătoare de

Dumnezeu, căci cu păcate grozave mi-am spurcat sufletul și

cu lenevire mi-am cheltuit toată viața mea; ci cu

rugăciunile tale spală-mă de toată necurăția.

+ La mulțimea păcatelor mele celor rele, cugetând eu,

ticălosul, mă cutremur de înfricoșata zi a judecății, ci

îndrăznind spre mila milostivirii Tale, ca David strig Ție:

și a darurilor sale pentru noi. Planificați-vă să participați la

rugăciune și rămâneți pentru conversații. Imediat după

conversații, vom avea o cină ușoară de post dăruită cu drag

de o doamnă membră a parohiei noastre.

RELIGIOUS CONVERSATIONS

The Saints & Their Gifts to Us

During the Great Lent, on each of the four Wednesdays

after the Great Complaine, we are going to learn from the

life of a saint and his/her gifts to us. Plan on attending the

prayer and remain for the conversations. Right after the

conversations, we are going to have a light lenten supper

made with love by a lady member of our parish.

Sunday of Orthodoxy, 2020

The Great Vespers of Sunday of Orthodoxy, that is, of the

first Sunday of Great Lent, March 8, will be hosted this

year by Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in

Rocky River. His Grace Bishop Andrei announced his

participation. The main speaker will be Father Martin

Ritsi of the Orthodox Christian Mission Center, St.

Augustin, Florida. Fr. John Parker – Dean of St. Tikhon’s

Theological Seminary will also be with us. Fr. Andrew

Lentz is the Parish Priest. We invite our faithful to

participate.

Before and during the Great Lent,

beginning with February 22nd, we are

observing a number of Memorial

Saturdays. Please reffer to the calendar

and try to make parastases on Saturdays.

Înainte și în timpul Postului Mare, începând cu 22

februarie, zilele de sâmbătă sunt orânduite pentru

pomenirea celor trecuți la cele veșnice. Vedeți calendarul

și, pe cât posibil, haideți să urmăm credința noastră și să

programăm parastasele în aceste zile.

”CE REPREZINTĂ COLIVA?”

Pentru creștini, cel mai important

lucru este mântuirea, viața veșnică.

Adevăratul creștin nu este egoist, nu

caută doar mântuirea lui. El se roagă

și pentru ceilalți și face tot ce poate

întru mântuirea lor. Chiar și cei care

nu mai sunt printre noi, care au murit, sunt pomeniți la

slujbe și în rugăciuni. Coliva repreizntă dragostea și

rugăciunile noastre pentru cei trecuți la cele veșnice. Ea

este făcută din boabe de grâu, pe care Domnul Iisus

Hristos le-a înfățișat ca simboluri ale Învierii. Bobul de

grâu se îngroapă în pământ, dar din el răsare o nouă

plantă, o nouă viață. Pentru cei adormiți este vorba de

viața de după moarte, cea veșnică. La români, grâul este

sfânt, deoarece din el se face alimentul de bază. „Pâinea

morților” este coliva și se împarte pentru pomenirea lor.

În colivă se mai pune și miere. Aceasta reprezintă

dulceața vieții veșnice, de care ne rugăm să aibă parte

sufletele morților. Împărțind colivă, rugându-ne și

aprinzând lumânări, ducem mai departe amintirea celor

adormiți și ajutăm la iertarea păcatelor și la odihna

sufletelor lor.

GREAT LENT, HOLY WEEK and

PASCHA

A NOTE FOR THE PARENTS

During this period of time, our Sunday school students are

learning about the Great Lent, Holy Week and Pascha.

Please bring your children constantly to the church and

Sunday school. If they miss a class, it will be hard for them

to make the connection with what was discussed, when

they will be back in the classrooms.

It is very important for us to have our children (especially

those from 2nd grade up) to understand the Word of the

Gospel.

Please teach them how to pray during the Divine Liturgy.

In school, the teachers are continuing the education by

transposing what the Liturgy was about in real examples.

So, our students will hear stories related to the Reading of

the day and will do activities to acquire what they have

heard in the church. So, for this to happen, please keep

your children in the church, by your side, and through your

example, they will learn how to behave in church.

You are fortuned to be blessed with children, please do not

let them stray from the church!

Notes from the Parish Council

We welcome Viorel Oancea, the newly elected Parish

Council President, who presided over his first council

meeting. The council took note of Father Remus Grama’s

reports about His Grace Bishop’s Andrei ordination to the

Episcopacy, the Clergy Conference in Arizona and other

significant matters.

Fish Fry, 2020

We are just a few days away from our Lenten Fish Fry.

Most of us are aware how important this is for our

community and budget. We sincerely hope you will set

aside your Friday afternoons, from February 28 till April

10, to come and volunteer. We urge families and young

members of the parish to come and offer their time, talent

and energy. Thank you!

Parish Property Projects

Recently, we had to

remove 9 pine trees

around the Social Hall to

prevent damage to the

new section of the roof.

Last week, the Tree

Contractors, Inc.

company has been

retained to grind the

nine stumps for the

amount of $425. The

same company will

remove the one broken

sycamore by the Parish

House ($1,400).

Many thanks to Vasile Peicu who installed some

needed shelves in the pavilion to help us organize

storage space.

Due to the light winter weather work on the premises

continued in December and January. The aged taxes

shrubs around the front marble column (by the flag

pole) have been uprooted. As soon as weather permits,

we will wash the statue and re-landscape the area.

The Council finalized the events for the year.

George Enescu Choir is

Welcoming New Members

We all like to hear the Choir during the Liturgy and a few

joined it. We would like to acknowledge Rodica Iancu,

Antoniu Iliaș, Jr. and Antoniu Iliaș, Sr. who recently

joined the choir. We hope that their example will encour-

age other young members of our parish to put their voices

to work for God. The choir is always in need of new mem-

bers.
