Since the middle of May, the 41 st Brigade Group had been fortifying positions around the Yukon River, near the Yukon-Charley River National Preservation. It was from these positions that the 41 st brigade hoped to not only hold any Russian attack, but to unleash a devastating counter attack. When the 116 th Naval Rifle Battalion began to march towards the lines of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment Battle Group, the stage was set for a battle that could swing the momentum to the Canadians for the first time since the Airborne Regiment ambushed a Russian Air Assault Battalion a week after the invasion .
