Gathering Around the Word PRELUDE (8:30) Away in a Manger Karen Thompson Alleluia Ringers (11:00) Love Came Down at Christmas arr. Cynthia Dobrinski Tower Ringers WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS THE LIGHTING OF THE FIRST CANDLE OF ADVENT: Hope (Habakkuk 1:1-4; 2:2-4; 3:17-19) *Hymn LYONS The candle of hope we light in this hour Proclaims that the Lord is coming in power. We wait for a future, now hidden from view, When Christ in his glory will make all things new. People of God, prophets like Habbakuk pointed to a future hope, a Savior. No one knew when he would come. They only hoped they would recognize the Messiah, the Son of God. We wait with hope for the One who has come and is coming. Today we light a candle to symbolize our hope. We hope in the One who will come. (Light the candle of Hope.) People of God, a New Hope is coming. We will rejoice in the Lord. *HYMN 88 O Come, O Come, Emmanuel VENI EMMANUEL (stanzas 1,5,6, and 7) *PRAYER OF CONFESSION Holy and loving God, we have dwelt in darkness and have preferred it to the light; we have been proud of our accomplishments and have despaired over our shortcomings. Smooth down the mountains of our pride, and lift up the valleys of our doubts. Open a path in the wilderness of our lives, that we might find our way to you again. Refine us and prepare us for life in your kingdom. Silent Prayers of Confession *ASSURANCE OF PARDON *RESPONSE OF PRAISE 83 Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus Come, thou long-expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; from our fears and sins release us; let us find our rest in thee.
