Project Report (DPR) for Regional Rail System for Ahmedabad was initiated by GIDB in 2003 through

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and RITES. The objective was to incentive the people to stay in

satellite townships of Ahmedabad by ensuring that they reach their work places using a suburban rail

bases transport system. The project will use the existing Right of way available of Indian Railways

passing through the city by upgrading, modernizing and integrating the existing railway facilities and will

create its separate tracks and suburban train stations at 1.5-2 kms with operating frequency of one train

every 10 minutes during the peak time. The existing railway assets proposed to be upgraded as Regional

Rail System are on the following corridors:

Corridor 1 :- Barejadi – Ahmedabad Jn – Kalol Jn - 43.49 km

Corridor 2 :- Ahmedabad Jn – Naroda - 9.47 km

The DPR was submitted by DMRC in October 2005. Discussions were initiated Ministry of Railways for

the implementation of the project under Public Private Partnerships (PPP). As per the suggestion of the

Railway Board, the DPR was revalidated and submitted by RITES in 2009. As per the decision of

government, the feasibility of connecting more small towns with the Regional Rail System is under study

.

Project involved:

BOGIBEEL BRIDGE ON BRAHAMPUTRA RIVER

The Bogibeel bridge which will be the longest rail cum road bridge of the country with a total length 4.95

km. It is going to constructed over Brahmaputra river near Dibrugarh . Brahmaputra river is around 10 km

wide but it is very typical to construct 10 km wide bridge so many model studies were done to reduce the

length of the bridge.

Result of model studies to reduce the length.

• Khadir Width : 10 Km

• Design Discharge : 73000 cumsec

• Lacey’s Width : 1.4 km

• Proposal before model studies

Bridge 2 x 32.6 + 56 x 125 m= 7062.5 m with guide bunds on both ends

Proposal after model studies

Bridge 2 x 32.6 + 34 x 125 m= 4315.2 m with longer guide bunds on both ends.

Different parts of bridge

A bridge is mainly constructed in two phase

1) Substructure

2) Superstructure

Page 13: A REPORT on Rrs and Bogibeel Bridge

Work on the Sub-structure of the bridge has been in progress. Out of 42 wells (pillars), 32 wells have

been completed. Remaining wells are expected to be completed by June 2013. The construction of the

super-structure will start soon after that it will take around four years’ time to complete. The

superstructure, which will be made with composite welded steel truss and designed by a Denmark-

based company, will be the-first-of-its kind in the country. Around 2300 crore has already been spent

on the bridge.

This is the largest rail cum road bridge till now to be made by RITES limited. The foundation of the

bridge is well foundation and 42 peers will be used for the construction of the bridge and the span

length is 125 met. Span length plays an important role while making such kind of bridge because

discharge of the river plays an important role. While constructing such kind of bridge earthquake and

liquefaction was the major problems both of the test were done by IITs.

Bogibeeel Rail Link Infrastructure

A new station, New dibrugarh Rail Station is being planned for construction at Boiragimoth Kachari

village in Dibrugarh. The station is expected to be the biggest in the region. The rail link also has a

station at Chowalkhowa. It is being proposed to connect the Bogibeel rail line to Moranhat railway

station, on the south bank

Conclusion

RITES is a Government of India Enterprise, provide comprehensive engineering, consultancy and project

management services in the transport infrastructure sector under single roof. Since its inception in 1974,

company has made steady progress and diversified into new areas of business such as, export/leasing,

maintenance and rehabilitation of railway rolling stock, operation and maintenance of railway systems

under concession agreements and BOT, BOOT and PPP projects.

Different role are played by the different

divisions. In the Urban Transport division major ongoing project is Regional Railway System

Ahmedabad, It is like the metro but the different places will be connected through the local trains station

will be made at the interval of 1.5-2.0 km and the frequency of the trains will also be increased.

In the Railway Civil Engineering Design divisions the major ongoing project is bridge over Brahmaputra

river it is 4.95 met long bridge the cost of the bridge will be more than 2000 crore. The site selection is

very important in these kind of bridges the Brahmaputra river is 10 km wide at the bridge site but the

length of bridge is reduced by making guide bund. This bridge will solve the problem for railways.
