A Reflection from the desk of the Pastor Third Sunday of
Ordinary Time
January 24, 2021 Year B This Sunday, we hear Mark’s account of
the call of Jesus’ first disciples. This account is slightly
different from that of the gospel of John. Mark’s account talks of
Jesus meeting his first disciples as he walks by the sea of
Galilee. He meets Simon and Andrew who are going about their daily
business of fishing. Jesus asks them, by his call, to leave
familiar surroundings and obligations and take up a vocation that
would require a complete change of their lifestyles. Their
obedience was prompt and radical. Mark lays more emphasis on this
fact by stating that they abandoned their nets and followed Jesus.
Jesus also calls the brothers James and John in the same manner.
There is something about the response of these first disciples that
is worthy of emulation. When they are called by Jesus to follow
him, they respond with a sense of urgency. His call takes
precedence over their need to earn a livelihood. They put aside
their preferences and three of them (Peter, James, and John),
become the closest disciples of Jesus. Perhaps we can learn from
these disciples how to respond with urgency to the call of God each
day.

2020 Catholic Service and Ministry Appeal (CSMA)
The CSMA supports many of the organizations within the
Belleville diocese that reach out to the poor, address Catholic
education and support our seminarians (for a full list of the
organizations they support, visit:
https://www.diobelle.org/catholic-service-ministry-appeal).
The diocese report as of December 14, 2020 states they have
received pledges amounting to $1,076,114, which represents 102% of
their goal. Cash receipts total $1,025,929 which is 95% of the
total amount pledged. A total of 5,494 households have pledged
their support, which is 164 households more than compared to this
time last year.
The report for our parish as of December 14, 2020 is: we have
105 households with a target donation goal of $3,866. In 2020 19
households donated a total of $1,715 leaving a shortfall of our
goal of $2,151.
While the diocese as a whole reports an increase, they also
realize that the agencies they support are seeing an increase in
those who need help, especially from those effected by the
pandemic. If you have not yet pledged, please prayer-ful consider
your stewardship this year. No one person can do much, but as a
collective people of God, we can do a lot. May God bless you and
your family. The Most Reverend Michael G. McGovern, Bishop of
Belleville

Respect for Life Corner
“Repent and believe in the gospel.” In Mark 1:14-20, Unlike
Jonah, Jesus is not a reluctant prophet. He is steadfast in
determination to spread the good news! He walks from village to
village as a “one
man band” at times, trying to save us from sin, trying to save
us from ourselves. At times, his disciples didn’t understand his
saving message of redemption as he walked the earth. But he didn’t
give up. We too must be like Jesus and be fishers of souls. Finding
those who are hurting and praying for them and guiding them. Learn,
Act, Connect and Pray- We have Christ’s same life-changing words
today when we read the scriptures and hear them proclaimed at Mass.
We pray that our hearts may be touched and that we repent our sins
and truly believe. Christ died for each one of us and we pray that
his words can transform us as we examine our life’s priorities and
choose to follow Him.
