families in need:
• Reimburse parents and drivers for gas (if requested)
to transport patients to and from the hospital in Sacra-
mento.
• Purchase Amtrak and Bus tickets to and from Sacra-
mento for those without cars.
• Pay for taxi service to and from stations during hours
when the hospital van is not available.

ment for those in dire need.
The families are highly appreciative
of all that we do for them. Thank you!
The 2009 Imperial Session was held in San Antonio this year and there were several items on the ballot which concerned our Shrine Hospitals throughout North America. As you may recall, our Endowment Fund has dropped from approximately 8 ½ billion dollars to approximately 5 billion as result of the world economic situation. This prompted a ballot measure regarding the closing of 5 – 6 of our Hospi-tals to deal with this serious economic situation. The del-egates voted not to close any Hospitals. However, they did give the Board the ability to defi ne what services a Hospital provides. One possible scenario is that we could consoli-date acute patient care into our larger Hospitals and use the smaller Hospitals for out patient care. There will be a lot more discussion regarding this in the near future. An-other measure was to evaluate the acceptance of 3rd party insurance at our facilities. This is a new concept to Shri-ner’s, as we currently do not accept insurance payments for services. Granted this might generate some income. However, if enacted it is not without additional expenses to operate and manage a new department for billing and collection, not to mention intervention of government agen-cies and insurance companies as to how we conduct our business. As we do not currently track insurance informa-tion regarding our patients, this will require an extensive study and I am sure our Imperial Board will exercise due diligence before making a fi nal decision. In June of this year there was a tragic fi re that swept through a day care center in Herosillo, Mexico. At the time of the incident there were 155 -160 children 3 years or younger at the center, 88 of which fortunately were not hurt. There were however a number of children injured. In fact, approximately 21 children were treated by your Shri-ners Hospital in Sacramento and on top of that we sent a medical team to Hermosillo to assist where we could. Not only did we help those in need but we also received a tre-mendous amount of publicity from TV and radio. We are currently at the mid year point of our Sacramen-to Hospitals operating budget and I am happy to say we are right on track. In fact, we are $49,000 below our very conservative budget. My congratulations to the Adminis-tration and all the employees at Shrine Hospital – Northern California in these extremely and diffi cult and trying times. We continue to serve Our Children in an exemplary fash-ion as this short list of statistics indicate:
• Operations – 1,059 performed, up 4% vs. 2008• Prostheses – 94 made, up 80% vs. 2008• Casts – 1,164, up 6% vs. 2008• Admissions – 623, up 2% vs. 2008• Applications – 958, up 1% vs. 2008Have a question about the Hospital? Aahmes Shrine is going paperless with the newsletter, starting in January 2010. The newsletter will be available online at our website, www.aahmes.org, and is in full color. We have been asking for Nobles to opt out of the hard copy newsletter and receive it via email. It has been available since May 2007, when I started the program. The way the program will work now is as follows; if you do not have the ability to access the internet, then contact your Unit or Club and they will print one for you and you can either get it at your next meeting or they can deliver it to you. We have already ceased distribution via US Post to the European Nobles, and they are pleased that they are now getting a better, more colorful edition online, not to mention the time frame. It is now available immediately, as opposed to waiting for two weeks for the regular mail. The real potential here is that we should be able to start publishing monthly to keep everyone in the loop even more than before. Nobles, this is the logical thing to do and it sets us above most Temples in forward thinking. We are doing an envi-ronmentally prudent thing, and we are saving the Temple thousands of dollars a year, that can surely be used for day to day operations, maintenance projects, or whatever comes along. If you have any questions whatsoever, please contact me directly at [email protected].

Welcome to fall! The 2009 Imperial Session is now history, and there were several changes and excitinghappenings. One thing for sure is that all who attended commented about the weather – a nice 104 degrees with 95% humidity. At night, the temp would drop to 88 and it was still hot for those of us from Califor-nia. Look for the Imperial Session update elsewhere in this issue. Have you signed up for one of the upcoming social functions? The Shrine has so much to offer by way of its social activities, the Unit and Club events and the support of the children receiving care at the Shriners Hospitals for Children. How could you not feel good about this great Masonic Fraternity and being a Shriner? When the world seems so full of doom and gloom, it is reassuring to know that you can be with a family who have the same ideas and morals that you do, and that make such a difference in the life of a child. And by touching that child, the ripple effect comes into play as we also touch their families and friends. Sometimes I get frustrated, but this fraternity brings me back to center and I realize that I have an obligation to fulfi ll, not only to our predecessors but also to those who will come after us. Our Shrine group is an important part of the Masonic fraternity, help us to grow and add even more to the good we do in the community. Ask that special Masonic brother to join with us The next Stated Meeting is September 23rd. If you have not made plans to make this meeting, please recon-sider. As noted elsewhere in the News, there are several major issues facing your Temple and we need your input and comments on these items. This is your temple and your participation guarantees its success. And besides, it will be an honor to see you; and a pleasure to shake your hand. As I mentioned, you can view the current and past issues of the AAHMES NEWS on our Web Site – www.aahmes.org. If you haven’t checked out our Web Site, do it right now. Yours in the Faith, Jim Sloneker, Recorder

From the Editor’s Desk
The results are in and the representatives for the Shrine Nobility at the Imperial Ses-sions in San Antonio this year have elected to keep all 22 Shrine Hospitals open. A few hospitals may have to un-dergo some changes, but the underlying heartfelt feeling amongst Shriners remains true to the fact that the Shri-ners’ Hospitals and the Shrine fraternity are defi nitely as-sociated together and that bond remains strong ever since the fi rst hospital opened in 1922. Our network of hospitals has grown between 1922 and the opening of the Northern California Shriners Hospital in Sacramento in 1997 (which replaced the San Francisco Shriner’s Hospital). This is how the ‘world at large’ has mainly perceived the Shrine. I believe our philanthropic endeavors will continue to remain our strongest selling points for our fraternity. The Galveston Burn Center was very severely damaged by hurricane forces and its future was in question. In fact, it was destined to be closed, but now the repairs will be made and the hospital will remain part of our 22 hospital system. Jack H. Jones of St. Petersburg, Fla., was elected the Imperial Potentate of Shriners International, making him the highest-ranking Shriner in the world. Imperial Sir Jack will face a challenging year and we wish him all the best. I would like to give a personal Thank You! to the Nobles and ladies who help with the Aahmes News by be-coming a part of “Our 2009 Aahmes News Supporters”. You really help in a big way. We are looking forward to seeing you at the Aahmes social events and Nobles don’t forget the Stated Meeting in September. This will be an important Stated Meeting not only to learn what is transpiring within our temple but also the directives required to keep it strong and solvent.
Yours in the Faith,
Charles Langel, P.P., Editor

California. In 1998 Ed had the honor and privilege of serv-
ing as the 85th Potentate of Aahmes Temple. He was also
a Master Artisan Order of Quetzalcoat Teocali #13, and a
member of the Royal Order of Jesters Court 6.
He was a Past President of the Santa Rosa High Twelve
Club. Ed also held life memberships in the Royal Order of
Scotland and the Robert the Bruce Association. Ed was also
very proud to have served as a Rainbow Dad.
A veteran of the United States Navy, Ed was also a
member of the NRA and the California Rifl e and Pistol As-
sociation. He had the distinction of being known as The
Honorary Edmund C. Foster, having been commissioned a
Kentucky Colonel and a certifi ed Tennessee Squire.
If desired, donations in Ed's memory may be made to
the Scottish Rite Child Language Clinic, 625 Acacia Lane,
Santa Rosa, CA 9549, or to the Shriners Hospital for Chil-
dren, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817-2215.
TREASURER 2010
Aahmes Shrine Divan is looking for someone to
step up and run for Treasurer in 2010. Orren Rupert
has given notice that he will be stepping down at the
end of this year to pursue his PGA tour card (Poor
Golfer Association), and we need to fi ll this posi-
tion. Orren has worked very hard during this year
of transition and we are most appreciative of his ef-
forts. He is now passing the fi nancial torch and it is
time to elect a new Treasurer.
The successful applicant will have a working
knowledge of Quick Books, Profi t and Loss state-
ments, Balance sheets, and of course, Microsoft Of-
fi ce. If you are interested, please contact any Noble
of the elected Divan, so that we may discuss this
position in more detail.

Members and “Friends of the Band” enjoyed a great time at the U.C. Masonic Homes for the observance of Independence Day with a barbeque feed and concert. With a full band we relished the response from the resi-dents and guests with much applause and appreciative comments. The food was plentiful and par excellence and the outdoor setting terrifi c! I saw more than just band members in line for seconds! We recently provided a small combo for a meeting of the NARFE group by request and enjoyed the “Sing-a-long” fun. Yes, we can provide a small group for your entertain-ment by request. We welcome anyone no matter their skill level to join our groups and have fun with music. Expect some new music from us at meetings and other gather-ings. A no performance gathering was held at the Skinner home in San Leandro to present Durland with a nice tro-phy award for his many years of service and membership to the band. Roberts’ Awards created a beautiful crafting of purpleheart wood and golden baton holder for the event and we were delighted to see the expression on “The Peo-ples Friend” countenance. A feast was in order and with

This year has been just terrifi c for the clown unit. We had a fantastic turnout for the Fourth of July parade in Modesto with 18 clowns in face and six clowns support-ing the parade in other areas. Tom “Chippy” and Karen Killian opened up their home to over 70 people following the parade for a BBQ. Thanks again to both of them and their helpers for their hospitality and hard work. Anyone who went away hungry or thirsty it was their own fault.
Congratulations to Rocky “Mr. Bubbles” Gould, Tom “Chippy” Killian and John “YOO HOO:” Utne for receiving the Hiram Award also to Jack “Snuggles” Helsby for being Mason of the Year. We have had the pleasure of welcoming two new active clowns to the unit: Herbert “Snooopy” Brownlee and Glen “Res-Q” Saunders and associate clowns Jerry Journey and Fred Orchard. We are happy to see our unit growing. Everyone continue to let people know that we are the fun unit and keep inviting them to our activities.
Upcoming Events:

I have had tremendous backing this year. To all men and women who have stepped up to support the unit I can not thank you enough. Because of your assistance we have been a success. WE GOT PEOPLE!

Past Masters stated meeting and dinner has changed from Sept. 23rd to Sept. 30th reason Aahmes Stated Meeting is on Sept.23rd and don't forget to call the temple for dinner reservations , see you at Aahmes Stated Meeting. Our Nov. Past Masters stated meeting, dinner and Elec-tion Night will be on Tuesday Night November 24th and not on Wednesday night. (cont’d on page 22)
We had a wonderful time at the Modesto Parade on July 4th. Our trailer, adorned with Shriners Hospital information, was fi lled with Novkeps and other Nobles. The crowd was very appreciative of the Shrine and what we do. It kind of makes you feel good! We have concluded our parade participation for this year and have enjoyed every one of the parades. If you want to participate in a parade next season but are not able to make the walk, we encourage you to ride on our trailer on a space available basis. There is no fee for any-one to ride on the Novkeps trailer. Contact our captain if you would like to ride with us in any of the parades. It’s the time of year to start thinking about the Novkeps crab feed. For the fi rst time, our crab feed will NOT be held at Centennial Hall, but WILL be held at the Aahmes Shrine Center in either late January or early February 2010. The same great crab, other food, band, dancing, prizes and fun will be available for all to enjoy! Mark your calendars as we hope to see you there.
The Novkeps meet on the fourth Thursday of the month and everyone is welcome to attend (except August, when we are dark). We have a pot luck dinner with the ladies and guests before the meetings. The Novkeps ladies aux-iliary (Zen Sayedah) have their meeting after dinner. Social is at 6:00 p.m., dinner at 7:00 p.m. followed by the meet-ing. Contact our Treasurer Bob Wagle at (925) 455-4759 if would like to come.

LEGION OF HONOR
The Legion of Honor did not participate in the 4th of July parade at Modesto this year. Due to scheduling confl icts of most of our players we did not have a suffi cient number of musicians to attend. This is the fi rst time in many years we have missed this parade and we are trying to come up with a way to avoid this in the future. Our next parade will be the Veteran’s Parade in Pleas-anton on Sunday, November 1st. It is always fun to go to this parade and share in the Patriotic spirit it brings out. Our last parade of the year will be the Christmas Parade in Livermore. More information will be coming on that parade. We held our Annual Ice Cream Social and Cake Auc-tion on August 23rd and had a good turnout from the com-munity and Shrine members. Once again, everyone en-joyed the auctioning talents of Russ Donohue with his cake bringing in the most money. Thank you, Russ for his ef-forts and a huge thank you to Valerie and Howard Roberts for Chairing the event. The Legion of Honor has scheduled their Past Com-manders Night on Monday, September 28th at the Brass Door in San Ramon. The dinner theme for the meal is a Greek Soldier’s Dinner and the two entries occurred are a meat stew with vegetables or sole fi llet, both traditional Greek recipes. The meal will cost $32.50 per person. If you are interested in attending, please send a check and entry choice to Orrin Rupert, Treasurer of the Legion, c/o the Shrine’s address before Sept. 24th. Our Honored Ladies Night will be on Monday, Novem-ber 9th at Pier 29 in Alameda. There will be more details at a later date on this event. Be sure to save this date in your calendar so we can have a great turnout. Keep checking your email for any updates.

proper libations we devoured a sumptuous pot luck dinner as if musicians and their families were starving. Thanks Virginia for your fantastic culinary skill and organizing ef-fort. As Durland is enamored with music and clocks of all genre it was a great opportunity to present him with a handmade one of a kind lamp. We gave him a nice table lamp made with the fi rst fl ute purchased by the San Lean-dro School District’s music program. It was mounted on a beautiful slab of polished agate from Victoria, B.C., and above the shade a miniature working “mantle” style clock fi nial keeps a reminder of time to play! This month we learned that if the drummer plays too fast with sticks and too slow with brushes he is told to use one of each! In The Faith,

There are three knocks at the door! There are times that the CCSC President feels that no one answers those knocks. In the Aahmes News of July/August the President wrote of interest, communication and public relations. As we are aware, any well run club or organization can only function properly if its members participate and work together to keep interest in their organization. Our Shrine Club is for-tunate in having a few members that do most of the work that keep the CCSC as a functioning Club. They answer the knocks at the door. The message here is that we NEED the input of all members. Your President has the gavel, but his success rests in the hands of its members. With-out their help we only have a poorly attended monthly lun-cheon club. You, we, want more! You have ideas of what our our Club needs. Share those ideas and interest; help get speakers, suggest programs of interest, communicate with the Offi cers. Constructive communication(s) is required. That will go a long way in doing what was the President’s message in the July/August Aahmes news. We have in place a 'phone-tree'. The fi ve members that volunteered to call and remind our Brothers and their ladies of our lunch meetings will be calling you. Speak to them and let them know what you want; what we need. To drop attendance is not an option for improvement. Come to our meetings and speak out; be constructive. The President is aware that some of our members work when we have our lunch meetings. Is this year passing as fast for you as it is for me? As I write this article, August is about here and fall is just around the corner. The next Alameda Shrine Club dinner is set for Wednesday, September 9th, with no-host cocktails and hors d’oeuvres commencing at 6 PM, and dinner at 7 PM. Those attending our dinner last June enjoyed the Pier 29 Restaurant in Alameda so much, that we are going to meet there again for our September dinner. The food was great, the view of San Francisco across the bay was beautiful, and the parking was free and plentiful, so you can’t ask for much more. Our theme for this dinner is Hawaiian, so wear your brightest Hawaiian outfi t and come join us for a nice evening with your Shrine friends. The Honor Units for this dinner are the Legion of Honor, Motorcycle Patrol, and Temple Guard, so we hope many of the members of these Units are able to attend. If you would like to be placed on our mailing list or email list so that you are notifi ed of the details of this dinner, as well as our future dinners, please let me know (Jim West-fall, Secretary, Ph. 510-797-8067 or email me at [email protected]). ---Jim Westfall

REDWOOD SHRINE CLUB
I’m jumping way ahead of myself on this article, as I want to make sure to be timely for submission of this article to the Temple for the Sep-Oct issue. (The wife and I will be traveling throughout the Southwest during most of the July period.) So here goes. One of the biggest Holidays of the year will be the Labor Day Weekend. A veritable host of Shriners will be attend-ing various activities as well as participating in the Ft Bragg parade. Even Clubs from Oregon travel south to join us in this venue.
Renegade Mini Cars UnitWayne Hooper - Captain
We will be continuing our efforts to assure that the cars are in working order, and looking forward to new partici-pants in our Unit. Activity is a little slow, however there are a few parades on screen: Ft Bragg Labor Day Parade and the Rio Dell Wildwood Days stand out. Hope to see you on the sidelines or as a participant.
Djinns Band UnitKen Christiansen - Sultan
The Band has been very busy during the spring months and we look forward to an increasing activity level during the summer months. Most exciting was our Steelhead Lodge weekend where we had a number of RVers and some motel users joining the festivities on the Northcoast. A potluck style brunch was served on Fri-Sat-Sun with everyone joining the com-raderie. Our unit provided breakfast for those attending. A good time had by all. Looking a goodly calendar period ahead, there is the Labor Day Weekend, Fort Bragg, Past President’s Dinner and a number of unit activities.
Joker Clowns UnitJim Widdoes - Chief Clown
Our unit, as per usual, is busy year round. We have completed the McKinleyville, Fortuna and Ferndale Parades and look forward to the Rio Dell & Ft Bragg ac-tivities, along with the Children’s Special Olympics and the Fortuna Masonic Picnic. Of special interest to us is the Children’s ID Program and various Screening Clinics that take place throughout the year. It is really pleasurable to see and talk to parents and their children that have been admitted to the Shriner’s Hos-pital for corrective procedures. We have been privileged to meet a number of these folks throughout the year and they are very happy to meet us in person and relate their experiences. ---Bruce Tannock, Secretary
It’s about time ! The weather in this section of the country is getting a lot better without the rain. ‘Course that opens up the menu to a whole lot of activity for Blue Lodg-es and Shriners alike. Sure like the idea.
The Mother Lode Shrine Club's last event was our annual FIZZ Breakfast in June at Railtown State Park in Jamestown, with 66 well satisfi ed attendees who scarfed up a great meal by our caterer. We were glad to see so many out-of-town visitors. Bob Solem's se-cret fi zz recipe was a big hit, as usual! Our Clowns made their annual trip all the way to beautiful downtown Tuolumne City to participate in the Lumberjack Parade, and our car made it all the way through withoutbreaking down, thanks to that talented shade tree mechan-ic Art Edwards. Our next event will be the 5-Valley Picnic on Septem-ber 26th, where we will again be offering those gourmet hot dogs and free popcorn. Come on out and enjoy your-selves, and remember where the proceeds go!!
ing or noon be a better time for us? As Masons I am aware that nights are out of the question, due to fact that we have obligations in our Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite or at Aahmes. With July and August dark, please fortify your thought and come prepared to express yourself at our September 17th lunch at Zio Fraedo's, 611 Gregory Lane, Pleasant Hill. We will try to have a speaker. Reservations are de-sired. The $20.00 is for the hors d’oeuvres, three choices of entrées, and a drink, plus that great room is a bargain. PLEASE WEAR YOUR FEZ. On September 27, 2009, the CCSC will have its “Past Presidents “Brunch” at Brass Door, San Ramon. Our So-cial hour will start at 10:00 am and the brunch at 11:00 am. The cost will be $20.00 . Please wear your fez. Please bring your lady and/or any prospective new member. The menu is eggs benedict, scrambled eggs, ham, bacon, fresh fruit, orange juice, fresh rolls, cottage potatoes and coffee or tea. Please call for reservations by September 23rd. Cal Mel Augustine:510 524-4952 or Ron Burch: 925 606-1581. Let us make this a big one. ---Mel Augustine, President

Noble Charles Aldrich receiving Honorary Membership
of the Dartford Shrine Club
Anglia Shrine Club hosted a BBQ at Long Furlong House on Sunday 14th June under the eye of Noble Robin Colton, President of the Club. Over 80 people attended a real American style BBQ. No one left hungry! We were blessed with Ill. Potentate Terry Moody of Aahmes Center and his lovely First Lady Vesta, both of them were warmly swallowed up in the event, even Terry took the lead intro into the Ceremony. A real Trooper.
The event raised £369.00 (or $597.88) for The An-glian Shrine Club John Bays Fund, Rachel Glass our 13 year old special agent, who has come through a very seri-ous illness from birth, and is still not out of the woods, to whom we have given the task to search out the children’s needs in a local hospitals or Institutions and give a cheque for £250.00 (or $405.00) from the John Bays Fund to be blown on anything the Children want over Christmas. Ra-chel Glass attended this BBQ with her Mother. Rachel was presented to Her Majesty the Queen last year for Stirling work in organising charity work on her own!
It was interesting to note that although we all called John Bays the “Big Man”, he was big but mainly had a big heart and a big involvement in the world. He believed in everything he did, 100%. To show their affection to John, members of The Farmers Lodge of Norfolk, John’s Wis-bech Masonic Lodge, The Masonic Fly Fishing Team and of course the Shriners rallied to make Sunday a special Day. John Bays was a special Ambassador for Aahmes in the UK for many years.
The Raffl e, of which many people supplied fabulous gifts, raised further monies, some of which £1000,will be sent to Aahmes Transportation Fund; for their use , and a further £100 from the Fund for The Macmillan Nurses. As we say in East Anglia “The Potentate and his Lady did us proud” and the guests and Shriners could not thank them enough for their attendance.
“As usual the sun shone on the Shriners! Some of our guests now call us the Shiners!”

ROD & GUN CLUB
The Rod and Gun Club had a fi rst with a Bocce Ball lunch at Campo de Bocce in Livermore. After a lunch we played bocce ball and beware as George Christensen and both Kathy and Dain Warton toss a mean bocce ball. We plan the next meeting on Aug 17 at Campo de Bocce, this a Monday evening with all you can eat spaghetti. If any-one wishes to stay and on their own play bocce ball after we are through with the meeting, we feel it would be very entertaining. We want to plan another breakfast meeting at the Liver-more Pleasanton Rifl e range. Anyone wishing to stay after our breakfast meeting and go shooting on their own, will fi nd plenty of opportunities to enjoy at the range. Please keep in mind that the enjoyment we get out of our club is the amount of involvement we put into it. We are shooting for a date of Burgers and Bowling in Oct. Note on your calendar - Sept 19th is our OV at Knights Ferry - always a fun picnic. We hold our meetings 6:30PM on the third Tuesday in Feb, Apr, Jun, Aug, Oct and Dec at the Aahmes Shrine unless otherwise noted. Dues are $15/year. Our goal is Shrine Family Fun. ---Sacco Lorenzini, President

5-VALLEY SPECIAL LADIES
It always amuses me when September comes around and people tell you that Fall is in the air. Anyone who has lived in this area for any length of time knows that Sep-tember is our Summer. “Fall” doesn’t come around until October. At least it won’t be too long before the leaves turn color and begin to fl utter to the ground in the swirling
breezes. As I’m not a warm weather person, this is my
time of year. Let the cooling begin. Also, how can we
forget the ghosts, goblins and witches who will be visiting
us in October. I always enjoy the trick or treaters coming
to the door, especially the little ones. They don’t expect
