Board meetings are an opportunity for you to become involved in our club. Find out how you can help out with an event, or even how to plan one yourself. We are always looking for new ideas for events and for fresh energy. If you are interested in staying informed about the dates, times and locations of our board meetings, please sign up for email notification at our event registration website: www.audiclubnw.motorsportreg.com

We are nearing the halfway mark in our year and have five major events under our belt. And there is still a huge year ahead of us! Not only do we have many high speed driving events slated, but this year boasts sellout driver’s skills and teen clinics, unique and scenic tours, and even a karting challenge!

These incredible events couldn’t happen if it weren’t for the volunteers who donate their time and skills to coordinating events, organizing people, planning routes, and managing registration. Currently there are 800 members in our chapter, but our volunteering community is comprised of a small 30 people.

Volunteerism by the numbers:

Given that we still have half the year ahead of us, please take a moment and think about how you might like to get involved. Keep your eyes peeled for emails and Facebook posts highlighting the variety of opportunities we want yourhelpwith!Let’smakethenext50%oftheyearmoreamazingthanthefirst! If you have any interest to work on the club’s community impact and member activities, now is a good time to check us out! Audi Club Northwest is revamping programs, looking at the event schedule, and developing support for our club. These adjustments open up chances for new people to join the core team to make it happen. Many of these programs just need a fresh perspective, ideas, and a little fresh energy. There is quite a range of interesting topics to engage. We want to do a better job supporting the membership. Social media like Facebook and Twitter, and communications tools such as our website and MotorsportReg, are a focus. We are looking for people who want to lend a hand. This could include you!

Mark your calendars for Friday, June 12, as we’re heading back out to Pacific Raceways for

Geschwindigkeit 2015. Pacific Raceways is only 35 miles outside of Seattle and provides a 2.25

mile long road course with 150 feet of overall elevation change. If you haven’t had a chance to check

out the facility, and especially if you haven’t been on track at Pacific Raceways, this is your chance.

We will have instructors available, but we will be limiting this event to those of you who have at

least participated in a Driver Education/Driver Skills day with ACNW (University of Quattro, Matt

Ammon Memorial Driving School, or QuattroFest) or equivalent from another club. More details and

registration are available at www.audiclubnw.motorsportreg.com. And, even though the event is

sold out this year, stop by to check out the facility and visit with ACNW friends. For questions, please

contact Seth Varty – [email protected].

To begin, my track experience consisted of a couple of lead/follow laps at Pacific Raceway; my son had no track experience at all. We had met our instructors the previous day at the Matt Ammon Memorial Driving School and we seemed to hit it off immediately. Arriving at The Ridge Motorsport Park, everything became a bit clearer as we passed the sweeping turns and noticeable incline changes. This was going to be fun, although I was a bit intimidated by some of the cars that were going to be there including a Ferrari 458 and several Audi RS4, RS5, RS7, R8 and TTRS cars; I would be driving my VW Jetta while my son drove his Audi B5 S4. Our first session was eye opening to say the least, but our instructors were very good at explaining the line and pointing out landmarks to help guide us around the track. My first lesson was how to conserve the brakes when I tried to slow the car from 130 mph too quickly going into turn 1 and lost most of my pedal feeling. The next thing I learned was that hitting a huge top speed down the front straight away is only good for bragging rights on Facebook if you can’t do anything with that speed 2 or 3 turns later.

The download sessions following each of our track sessions were verybeneficialasitpointedoutthatnoneofusweregettingit100%yet, and all of us were having a similar learning curve to conquer. We were allowed to head out on the track as passengers in our instructor’s cars and learned immediately just how much speed can be carried into a turn and how to link sections of the track together instead of simply connecting the cones.

Later sessions led to smoother laps and improved lines around the track. Each of our sessions had a goal to work on with our instructor and as our confidence grew, so did our speeds. My son was upset initially that he was being passed by everyone, and particularly annoyed when someone would do it in a 4 cylinder car without Quattro. His instructor taught him that as he learned the proper line through the turns, his speed would improve. This lesson made complete sense when my son realized his instructor was crushing the course in a car with less power than his by simply not losing the speed he established on the straightaways by properly negotiating the turns.

Audi Club Northwest and Northwest Audi Dealers presented the nineth annual Matt Ammon Memorial Driving School and Teen Clinic

(MAMDS). For the first time there was a split venue. The Driver Skills (DS) event was held at Bremerton Motorsports Park on Saturday, May 16 and the High Performance Driver Education (HPDE) instructed lapping was held at The Ridge Motorsports Park on Sunday, May 17. On Saturday, drivers tested their vehicles and their own limits in Drivers Skills followed by the fun of navigating through an autocross course by following a route of cones that made up turns, gates and slaloms. Autocross was an excellent way to practice the car control skills learned in the morning’s exercises. On Sunday, the group headed up to The Ridge Motorsports Park and, using street rules, participated in instructed lapping on a road course that puts multiple cars on the course for 20-30 minute sessions. This was a great way for participants to learn and practice car control skills, and it was huge fun.

As most of you know, scheduling any event in the Pacific Northwest must be tempered with knowing that at

some point you will get wet. And that is nothing to most of the experienced Audi Club members. But for me this was going to be a new experience. Except for one, all the car and motorcycle track events I have participated in have been on a dry track. As a result, I was looking forward to the experience, especially in my Audi with all-wheel drive. On Sunday, March 22 for Son of QuattroFest, I arrived at the track early as I had volunteered to help set up the banners. As a relatively new member, I chose that job so that I had enough time to set-up my paddock space, get my registration paperwork and tech the car. Once that was done it was time to start the event in earnest.

The drivers meeting was located near event sponsor Audi Tacoma’s display. They brought along three gorgeous cars for us to see, sit in and ask questions. The heart of the Audi R8 was exposed for us to see, the carbon fiber surrounding the engine bay acting like a honey, drawing us in for a closer look. I really liked the color of that car and after researching I understand why. It is Daytona Grey which happens to be the color of my Audi S5! The Ibis White Audi A8 showed us the luxury of that model line with its spacious interior and occupant toys like heated, massaging seats! The sexy red Audi S3 was also presented, showing us that fun comes in a smaller package. Audi Tacoma also came with swag and a number of participants went home with some nice gifts!

My instructor found me and began the interview process to gain an understanding of my experience and my goals for the day. After my first session on the track and subsequent session review with my class, I took the opportunity to ride with my instructor. I was looking forward to riding in a car with its turbocharged engine located behind the rear wheels…in the wet. Watching the smooth and precise steering, throttle and braking inputs translate into a swift ride around the track with no “moments” showed me how it could be done.

After that ride, I looked forward to driving in all conditions and as a result I had a blast. I worked on minimizing input and being smooth with my hand and feet inputs. Important points when the level of adhesion is less than optimum! And we did have varied conditions throughout the day. My instructor would talk about the conditions being presented in each session and describe what I could expect. Really slick out there…river in turn 14, mud outside turn 15…puddles in the apex of turn 16. Straddle the puddle in turn 10 by placing the car half a car width to the right which meant putting the right tires on the concrete.

I learned to recognize the limits of adhesion in the wet by the noise of the front tires. That point was first brought to our attention in the Novice download session. Scott

and one of the instructors explained that one can deal with that understeer by slightly “unwinding the steering input” or using a little less throttle. Scott was the download master for the Novice drivers. He presented the material with both seriousness and levity, always asking for questions and always open to input from the experienced instructors present in the forum. I was able to observe other instructor/driver conversations during the day and I observed a genuine desire by all the instructors to help transfer knowledge to the willing students.

The last session was on a wet but drying track…so my instructor explained one needed to keenly observe where the wet patches/puddles were as we ramped up the speed as compared to the previous really wet sessions and place the car accordingly. At the end of the day I left with confidence in my ability to read the conditions and feel what the car was telling me. What a great feeling that is! Thanks Audi Club!

The morning started with our Driver Skills (DS) program, which consisted of a short chalk talk session where we discussed vehicle dynamics and how you can minimize the chances of being involved in an accident. This talk is an important part of becoming a more polished driver. After the chalk talk we transitioned to the large paved surface at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds where Audi Club Northwest instructors put drivers through a group of exercises designed to teach new skills and expand on old ones in a controlled but exhilarating way. This was great fun. Once our instructors felt drivers learned what is needed in the exercises we transitioned the pavement into an autocross. An autocross is a small course designed to test your new skills, and since it is timed drivers were able to see their improvement as an instructor worked with them on the strategies to better their next run through the course. This was where the fun REALLY began. Drivers went home with sore cheeks as their smiling muscles were the most tested of all. We’ll see you next year!

The Audi, BMW, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz clubs are coming together for a first-ever Show und Shine car show. This epic gathering will be part of Renton River Days at Cedar River Park on July 26, 2015.

It’s a wonderfully simple event. Just wash your Audi, BMW, Porsche, or Mercedes-Benz, clean the wheels and you are ready for the lawn. We anticipate an amazing eclectic display of Deutsch Schőnheiten (German Beauties) spanning seven decades. To fill out the seven decades we encourage those with Deutsch Schőnheiten’s from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s to register early to secure your spot.

Space is limited to just over 75 cars per club so be sure to secure your spot on the lawn early! Parking on the lawn is limited to Audi, BMW, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz branded vehicles only.

Cost for the Show und Shine is $10 with the event raising money for the local Renton Lions Club who have been doing good work for the local community for over 75 years. During registration you may also choose to make an additional donation to Seattle Children’s Hospital, separate from the Renton Lions Club.

We’ll start parking cars by Marque at 10:00am. There will be a couple of food trucks on site. After lunch we’ll have a short presentation and announcements and probably wrap up around 2:00pm.

Besides the Deutsch-Marque Show und Shine, Renton River Days offers many activities for the whole family.

Please email Jenni at [email protected] with any questions.
