.A bell rang out in my brain when I heard Senator Elizabeth Warren describe a disturbing moment in her early career. You guessed it! Warren’s “me too” moment took me back more than 40 years to a time and place I had neatly repressed. I had gone to Washington to advocate for (what else?) the arts. Forewarned that I might be shuffled off to an aide, I persisted. My efforts rewarded, I was face to face alone with an important, esteemed and powerful elected official.

As I made my case for the arts with facts and figures, I was prepared for almost any question except the one I was asked: “What is your room number at the hotel?” What was a serious advocacy effort was turned into a charade. I felt diminished to think that my presentation had been reduced to a possible roll in the hay. I felt disillusioned that an elected official would be so brazen as to proposition a constituent. I felt sick that my generation’s efforts to liberate women had failed to even give us equal respect. So yes. Me too. I join the chorus to end this sexual predator behavior. Let’s call it what it is...just another dangerous assault on our integrity.

November 2 Information Session: Insurance for Artists

ArtsWestchester will host “Every Artist Insured: Finding Affordable Coverage in a Changing Insurance Landscape,” an information session that is designed for artists who are not insured by an employer or union health plan. Songcatchers Celebrates 40 Years With Documentary

The Songcatchers continues its 40th anniversary celebration with the premiere of a new documentary, 40 Years of Music-Making: A Tribute to Songcatchers, by filmmaker Nicholas Carter. Presented in tandem with New Rochelle Council on the Arts on November 19, the documentary chronicles the history of the nonprofit choral group. The documentary also honors the group’s founder, Sister Beth Dowd, who began the group with a mission to nurture programs that “create a peaceful community spirit and enable growth of body, mind and spirit.” The event will feature a performance by the group’s intergenerational concert choir, which will be joined by former members and friends to sing a selection of their favorite and signature songs. An exhibition presented by Iona College Council on the Arts this month explores Flemish artists of the 16th and 17th centuries and the Flemish Baroque period. Twenty-six works from the collection of Seena and Arnold Davis were carefully chosen by curators Tom Ruggio and Thomas Germano to provide a narrative of the Baroque period, with Peter Paul Rubens as the connective tissue. All of the works “somehow relate to the political and religious climate from which Rubens emerged, his development in Antwerp, travels to Italy, artists who worked alongside him and students in his workshop,” explains Ruggio. Peter Paul Rubens and the Flemish 17th Century showcases four works by Rubens, including Head of Marie de’ Medici

(Study for Reconciliation of the Queen and her Son). An opening reception will take place on November 5. A curators’ talk on November 9 will discuss the art historical narrative of the exhibition. Through January 7, Katonah Museum of Art (KMA) presents the work of two visual artists who each gather and reassemble everyday items from their surroundings as a way to create a commentary and open dialogue about their environments. Object Out Loud: Arman and Nick Cave showcases more than twenty works that utilize the power of these found materials to speak volumes about the society from which they were taken.

Nick Cave creates garments and sculptures out of found objects that often represent human empowerment. He is best known for his Soundsuits – colorful and whimsical suits that were first created in response to the Rodney King riots. These suits fully cover the body and empower the wearer by preventing any bias by the viewer about the wearer’s identity. Influenced by the Dada art movement, artist Arman protested against the materialist ideals found in the Modernism movement. Using found and discarded items, he constructed new pieces that act as a voice of nonconformity. The exhibition title’s use of the word “object” has double meaning: the word can be defined as a tangible item, as well as an act of protest or opposition. In this exhibition, both artists embrace both meanings, as the objects in their works act as agents of social commentary. “Their shared love of objects found in popular culture makes their work visually arresting and intellectually satisfying, full of rich associations and symbolic meaning,” explained KMA Executive Director Darsie Alexander.

In KMA’s Learning Lab, collected materials will be on hand for visitors to use as part of a collaborative installation or personal artwork. Visitors are invited to incorporate their own tchotchkes into the collective piece. On November 5, sculptor and performance artist Tamar Ettun and The Moving Company will present an event during which colors, inflatables, sound and dance collide. This month, Axial Theatre continues its tradition of fostering new work and of celebrating women in theater. Katie Baldwin Eng’s award-winning play Nectar has only ever been seen in staged readings to date. It will make its world premiere as Axial’s mainstage fall production. Nectar tells the story of a pregnant woman from the Midwest who is on vacation in Europe when she meets a French film star. As it turns out, they were both mistresses to the same legendary writer, who is now in a coma. The encounter leads to poignant realizations and nostalgia as the women come to terms with the realities of love, sex and the cycle of life – all set in a package of magic realism. The play is directed by Ensemble Studio Theatre NYC’s Christina Roussos and stars a cast of nine, from which eight are Axial members and associates. Starting on November 10, Yonkers Riverfront Library will exhibit life-sized bronze sculptures by artist Vinnie Bagwell. The two sculptures, which are from a series of five, will be included in a forthcoming public rain garden planned for the City of Yonkers. The Enslaved Africans’ Rain Garden, set to be constructed on the banks of the Hudson River in 2019, will honor the legacy of enslaved Africans who resided at the historic Philipse Manor Hall in Yonkers. Six of these individuals were among the first to be manumitted by the law in the United States in 1799, sixty-four years before the Emancipation Proclamation. Bagwell will unveil sculptures that depict the characters of Isatta and Themba The Boatman, a lithe woman balancing a bucket of water on her head while carrying fish and a solemn boatman respectively. The artist aims to portray what the daily lives of enslaved Africans looked like as a way to educate visitors about local African history in America, as well as to empower the Yonkers community. In conjunction with the exhibition, a film by spoken-word artist Ty Gray-El that features the original story of Themba, as well as the photographs by Leslie Jean-Bart, will be projected onto the exterior wall of the library. All five sculptures will be completed and permanently installed in the rain garden. An opening reception will take place on November 10. Jacob Burns Film Center Brings the World of Dance to the Big Screen Jacob Burns Film Center brings the world of dance – from hoofs and flicks to chassés and padebures – to the movie screen this month. The Center’s annual “Dance on Film” series will take place from November 1-9. Each of the documentaries in this nine-day celebration is about dancers and choreographers who have had a formative influence on their genres and discipline. Among those featured: Rudolf Nureyev defected from the Soviet Union during the Cold War to explore his artistry (Dance to Freedom, Nov. 1); ballroom champion Maxim Kozhevnikov finds inspiration in everything despite a severe physical disability (Kick Ball Change, Nov. 4 & 6); and Trisha Brown explored vertical space in her groundbreaking works (In the Steps of Trisha Brown, Nov. 8 & 9). An evening of short films, selected by choreographer Peter Pucci, who curated the series, explores how professional dancers take on and overcome challenges in both their technique and life (Nov. 2). From November 7-12, Mamaroneck Artists Guild will present an audio and visual art installation that allows participants and audiences to experience, read and share one another’s memories. Artist Christine Shannon Aaron’s community-based exhibition, The Memory Project, invited anyone who lives in, works in, or has ties to Larchmont and Mamaroneck to share their memories, which were then written or recorded. The shared memories resulted in several audiovisual art installations. For instance, one installation includes submissions that were written on strips of specialty paper and then coated in wax and hung in a “waterfall of memories.” Another weaves pieces of audio to which visitors can listen. While many memories submitted were not related to the towns, these submissions did thread a common needle among those involved. Memories included myriad emotions and experiences, from a summer camp to a war, and from a newborn baby to a death. On November 7, visitors can meet the artist and add a memory of their own for inclusion in an online archive; an opening reception will take place on November 11; and during a “walk and talk” on November 12, Aaron will discuss her creative process and how the project came about. On the Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in New York State, Artists Explore Voting Rights ArtsWestchesterOn November 6, 1917, women won the right to vote in New York State. ArtsWestchester’s Give Us The Vote exhibition commemorates this anniversary with works that shine a light on the suffrage movement, as well as works that examine barriers to the voting ballot that still exist in America today.

For instance, Natalie Baxter’s suspended white and gold flags and umbrellas reference the 1916 protest during which delegates had to walk through a line of women wearing white attire with gold sashes and umbrellas. Laurel Garcia Colvin combines images of women’s rights figures from throughout history, leading to the recent women’s rights marches, along with protest signs and resources for visitors to write to their local representatives.

A robust lineup of events look at what it took to get to this point, and the work that still needs to be done for equal voting rights for all citizens of the United States.

• November 2: An Evening with Ari Berman. The journalist and historian will speak about the Voting Rights Act before a Q&A session and book signing.

• November 3: Freedom Sings! Legendary musicians and storytellers Kim and Reggie Harris discuss traditional African-American spirituals and freedom songs.

• November 6: The Art of Politics: A Talk with Louise Bernikow. The historian will discuss a historical perspective on the suffrage movement in New York State.

• November 11: Create, Converse and Rock the Vote! Artist Pedro Nel Ospina invites visitors to create their own mini voting booth and share what the right to vote means to them. Register to vote with “Rock the Vote!”

• January 18: Use Your Words. Spoken word poet Toni Blackman will lead a workshop in the art of freestyle (improvised) rap. Register to vote with “Rock the Vote!”

Other organizations throughout the county are also taking a look at the history of women’s suffrage and voting rights:

Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary ArtIn conjunction with ArtsWestchester’s Give Us The Vote exhibition, two artists have created a voting booth for Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art (HVCCA), which is on view through December 17. For Women Warriors, four large-scale panels by artist Isis Kenney depict women such as Susan B. Anthony and Sojourner Truth as comic book superheroes who fight for human rights. Culture-laden flags by popular muralist Cey Adams are also on display. According to HVCCA Director and Co-Founder Livia Straus, “[the exhibition] looks to history to teach what has been accomplished and what ingrained issues still must be addressed.” Kenney and Adams both use bold visual signifiers of hip-hop to address what it is to be an American.

New Castle Historical SocietyNew Castle Historical Society (NCHS)’s exhibition explores women’s suffrage and the life of Carrie Chapman Catt, a leading suffragist and former New Castle resident. Through historic documents,

replica artifacts such as “Votes for Women” sashes, pennants and buttons, as well as historic photographs of suffragists participating in rallies, this exhibition explores the story of the men and women who fought for the creation of the 19th amendment. Catt, a founder of the League of Women Voters, was a driving force in the expansion of the suffragist movement as she proposed that supporters campaign for suffrage on the state and federal levels simultaneously. The exhibition is on view through June 30.

Neuberger Museum of ArtIn Neuberger Museum of Art (NMA)’s Votes!, a set of wall panels, provided by the New York State Museum, delineate the struggle for voting rights that women faced between 1848 and 1917. The project also focuses on New York-based cartoonist and suffrage activist Lou Rogers, who was born Annie Rogers. Her political cartoons had a pro-women stance and were published in many magazines and newspapers. Finally, a voting booth in conjunction with ArtsWestchester’s Give Us The Vote exhibition will be designed as an art installation by Purchase College’s Political Science class. The booth will be on view at Purchase College after November 7.
